Dear friends of the hUManities, Welcome to a new week Upcoming events: On Caliban and Slavery in Shakespeare’s The Tempest by Dr. Jamie Paris (ETFM) Thursday, February 9th, 2023 from 2:30 - 4:30 PM CT. In-person at 409 Tier Building The UMIH is thrilled to present the New Faculty Colloquium in which we highlight the research-in-progress of new faculty members in Arts. In this talk, Dr. Paris will consider the enslavement and imprisonment of Caliban in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest in terms of the history of the enslavement of Indigenous peoples in the New World in the early modern period and with reference to the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in Canadian prisons. This talk will attempt to bridge ideas from premodern critical race studies with the emerging field of early modern Indigenous studies. The Writing Toward a Just World Research Cluster Presents: Postcards from the World by Ariel Gordon Thursday, February 16th from 12 - 2 PM CT. In-Person workshop at 111 St. John’s College Ariel Gordon is a Winnipeg/Treaty 1 territory-based writer, editor, and enthusiast. She is the ringleader of Writes of Spring, a National Poetry Month project with the Winnipeg International Writers Festival that appears in the Winnipeg Free Press. In 2019 Wolsak & Wynn published Treed: Walking in Canada’s Urban Forests, a collection of essays that combines science writing and the personal essay. This workshop focuses on what it means to pay attention to the natural world, to stop and force yourself to observe. Participants will read and discuss writing about paying attention to the world and then observe the world for 30 minutes, taking notes. They will then spend time turning those observations into a poem or the beginnings of a story, which they might choose to share with the group. These unique opportunities were designed by the institute to support scholars doing important research in the humanities. PSLP is a unique-in-Canada Immersive learning opportunity that brings together a cohort of students each year across faculties, post-secondary institutions, interests, backgrounds and regions of the province to build their leadership potential. This program is an interdisciplinary co-curricular program that is hosted by the Burns Leadership Institute. This opportunity allows students a chance to be mentored by an inspiring leader and apply for the PSLP Fellowship to fund participation in the program. We remind all interested Faculty that the Institute for Humanities with the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics Book launch and abortion outreach event will hold tomorrow at 6 PM CT. Join us at Nicolino's (2077 Pembina Hwy) for Dr. Neil McCarthur and Dr. Dana Medoro's book launch in solidarity with the Women's Health Clinic. The Reception starts at 6 PM, followed by a Panel Discussion at 7 PM. There will also be light refreshments and dancing. The Reproductive Rites event host is Lisa Naylor, formerly an abortion counselor with the WHC, now the MLA for Wolseley. We will gratefully accept small donations at the event for a new ultrasound machine at the WHC. Some books will be available for purchase. The UMIH Research Cluster on Writing Towards a Just world is thrilled to invite interested folks to register for The 2023 OpEd Project. The OpEd Project is a U.S.-based organization whose mission is to change who writes history (https://www.theopedproject.org/mission), offering workshops that aim to accelerate the ideas of underrepresented thinkers, including but not limited to women of all backgrounds. The core workshop, Write to Change the World, is being offered online during reading week (Feb. 23 and 24 from 9 am to 12:30 pm CT). The Institute for Humanities can cover a limited number of participants. This workshop will highlight Listening with intention and compassion and focus on its importance in developing an array of writing media: documentary making, film making, statement and testimonial writing. Dear friends of the hUManities, We wish you a Happy New Year Announcements: The UMIH is excited to support the English, Theatre, Film and Media's Warhaft Lecture Series. They will be bringing in award-winning playwright, author, and journalist, Drew Hayden Taylor on the 19th of January, 2023. More details to follow. The UMIH also looks forward to a community project in partnership with QPOC (Queer & Trans People of Color, Winnipeg) on the 21st of January, as well as, the returning of Dr. Unrau and Amal Majumder's book club on the 18th. Please lookout for more details on these events. The UMIH 2023 - 2024 call for Graduate Fellows, Research Affiliates, and Research Clusters will be advertised soon.
