UMIH’s Upcoming Crafternoon PLUS Student PD Events

Dear Friends of UMIH, Please mark your calendars to join us in Tier 409 on Wednesday October 16 for our first Crafternoon. We’ll be sharing supplies, tools, and instructions for you to try your hand at weaving: a practice with a very long history and many points of connection to the humanities. You’re also welcome to bring a craft of your own to work on. Stop by anytime on Wed Oct 16 between 2:30 and 4:00 to take a break from your regular workday and connect with material culture. All are welcome. And ... we are pleased to announce two exciting upcoming events for students in the humanities. Please help us spread the word by sharing news of these events with students, especially graduate students. On Thursday October 24 at 2:30, UMIH will host a Zoom event on “Managing Challenges as an ABD Humanities Student.” Here is a description: Writing a dissertation poses unique challenges for graduate students. Without the camaraderie that can come with coursework or the clear timelines of candidacy exams, the writing stage can feel isolating and disorienting. Led by Dr. Emily Maggiacomo (U of Toronto), a recent PhD graduate from the University of Manitoba, this workshop provides advice for ABD students in the humanities as they work toward the final step of their graduate degree. Participants can expect to learn about the writing process, time management, and helpful resources, as well as coping strategies for the hardships that often accompany writing a dissertation. While this workshop is intended for ABD students in the humanities, all are welcome to attend. And, with thanks to our co-host, the Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media, UMIH looks forward to welcoming two representatives from Editors Canada for a career-themed event: “So you want to be a professional editor? A Discussion with Lisa Hislop and Michelle Waitzman from Editors Canada.” This event will take place on Zoom on Friday November 1 at 2:30. They include an exciting roundtable this Wednesday at which speakers will share reflections on how making things—from paper to beaded objects to photographs—informs their work in the humanities. We also invite you to join our UMIH book group, which will meet twice this Fall to discuss Dr. Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried. Free copies of this book are available for book group members. Please join us to discuss Miles’ critically acclaimed and methodologically innovative study of a handmade relic of a family’s experiences of both enslavement and resilience. Now that October is here, we can also look forward to welcoming you to the first of a trio of Crafternoons, a series of free drop-in crafting sessions exploring the role of hands-on making and material culture in the humanities. All are welcome. · The following event is presented by the 2SLGBTQ+ Histories Series. Dr. Tom Hooper (Department of Equity Studies, York University) "Resisting Anti-Queer and Anti-Trans Hate: Lessons from 1970s Toronto" Friday, 11 October 2024, 2:30 pm; 108 St. John's College. Everyone is welcome to attend. In January 1978 anti-Queer and anti-Trans activist Anita Bryant brought her "Save Our Children" campaign to Toronto. The previous year Bryant had organized against a Miami-Dade, Florida ordinance that protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Bryant's central argument was that this ordinance protected Queer and Trans people from discrimination in employment, including teachers and others who worked with children. The campaign to define Queer and Trans people as a threat to children worked, the Miami-Dade ordinance was repealed. Bryant was emboldened and embarked on a cross-continent campaign that also included a brief time Canada. Queer and Trans communities resisted these campaigns with various tactics. In this presentation I argue that studying our communities' resistance to Anita Bryant could be useful as our communities rally to resist anti-Queer and anti-Trans hate today. Dear Friends of the Humanities, This message shares a preview of our Fall term programming. Thanks for your patience as we finalized some plans! We are pleased to announce two roundtables featuring presenters from the U of M and the U of W. These roundtables will explore how making and the study of material culture enrich work in the humanities. Here are some details: Hands-On Humanities Roundtable (Wed 2 October, 2:30 – 4:00; Tier 409) Exploring practices as diverse as woodworking, chemical photography, and beading, six speakers will reflect on how hands-on practices shape their research, teaching, and/or outreach. Our speakers are: Dr. Alison Calder, Dr. Warren Cariou, Dr. Sarah Elvins, Dr. Nicole Goulet, Dr. Len Kuffert, and Dr. Celiese Lypka (U of W). Object Lessons Roundtable (Wed 6 November, 2:30 – 4:00; Tier 409) This roundtable will feature speakers’ reflections on objects that have transformed their work in the humanities. Our speakers are: Dr. Brenda Austin-Smith, Dr. Sean Carleton, Dr. Mark Lawall, Dr. Carla Manfredi (U of W), and Dr. Mike Sampson. Please mark your calendar to attend one or both of these roundtables. To deepen our exploration of material culture and making, we also invite you to join the UMIH Book Group. Our book for this term is Dr. Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake (2022). This group will meet twice (Tues Oct 22, 2:30-4:00; Tues Nov 19, 2:30- 4:00). All are welcome. Ten free copies of the book are available for book club participants. And continuing our engagement with hands-on humanities work, we will welcome Dr. Maria Zytaruk (U of Calgary) as a guest speaker on Friday November 29 (2:30-3:30, via Zoom). Dr. Zytaruk is a professor, curator, and radio documentary maker. Her lecture is tentatively titled “Public Humanities on the Ground: Cultivating Flax for Papermaking in a Campus Community Garden.” Please also mark your calendar to attend one (or more) of our UMIH Crafternoons, a series of drop-in crafting sessions. Try out a new craft or bring your own project. We’ll gather on three Wednesday afternoons (2:30-4:00; Tier 409). All supplies and instructions will be provided. Join us to explore weaving with looms (Oct 16), repurposing rags into rugs (Oct 30), and block printing and paper arts (Nov 27). Please note: we will be sharing news of additional events in the weeks ahead. This is just a sneak peek of what’s to come. We can, for example, look forward to presentations by some new members of the UMIH community. We hope you’ll join us in welcoming our new Research Affiliates: Rachel Shields (McMaster) and Dr. Youcef Soufi (U of T). We are also delighted to announce this year’s UMIH Graduate Fellows. They are Carla Kennedy (Indigenous Studies) and Karen Brglez (History). We can also look forward to hearing about the work of two new UMIH Research Clusters: a cluster on Prairie Abolition (led by Dr. Hee-Jung Serenity Joo) and a cluster dedicated to Ecology, Canadian Poetry, and Labour (led by Dr. Jamie Paris). Reconnecting to Resistance Sunday, April 21st, from 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM UM Fort Garry Campus Prairie Asian Organizers (PAO!) presents Reconnecting to Resistance, a community potluck, zinemaking workshop, and learning circle for Asian community members and friends. Illustrator and cartoonist Natalie Mark will lead the group through a brief intro to zinemaking workshop, after which attendants will be invited to create a page for the zine while engaging in a learning circle on Asian experiences of resistance and revolution. Zinemaking supplies will be provided, and there will be zines to read for inspiration. Though the focus will be on Asian histories, all who can respect the community and Asian cultures are welcome. Dear friends of the Humanities, Upcoming Events: UMIH Graduate Fellow Presentation by Jonathan Hildebrand (PhD, History) Water, Indigenous Presence, and Mennonite History in Manitoba’s “Barren Prairielands” Thursday, April 4th, from 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM in room 307 Tier How is water remembered and written about in a place that has been called the first European agricultural settlement on the Canadian prairies “without direct access to a major body or current of water”? How is Indigenous presence and land use addressed in a region where settler histories report “very little contact” between Indigenous peoples? And do themes of water and Indigenous presence overlap in any way? Using the Mennonite “West Reserve” region of southern Manitoba as a case study, Jonathan Hildebrand examines local histories and commemorations of the area to address these questions, and to better understand how Indigenous land becomes widely understood as settler space.
