Hello everyone, Health Sciences Graduate Students' Association (HSGSA) is thrilled to invite you to the upcoming Dr. Patrick Choy Distinguished Lecture 2024, featuring the esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Ian Weitz from McMaster University. Dr. Jeffrey Ian Weitz: Dr. Weitz is a Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, Executive Director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute, and Past President of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, Dr. Weitz focuses his clinical practice on patients with thrombotic disorders. His research spans the spectrum from basic studies in the biochemistry of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis to animal models of thrombosis and on to clinical trials of antithrombotic therapy. The breadth of his work is highlighted by his over 650 publications in journals as diverse as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Circulation, Blood, Annals of Internal Medicine, Nature Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, and Lancet. The recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Weitz was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Events like this are critical parts of the interdisciplinary fabric of our University and contribute to the multimodal and experiential learning environment for our students. The success of the Undergraduate Research Showcase (URS)<https://umanitoba.ca/research/opportunities-support/undergraduate-research-…> strongly depends on volunteers, especially judges. I am writing you today to ask if you would be interested in becoming part of the 2024 edition of the URS and volunteer a few hours of your time to assist us with judging this year's competition. We are offering 2 streams of competition and judging; Oral presentation and Poster presentation. * In the Oral presentation, students will have a maximum of 3 minutes to explain/describe their research project in any means/media format of their choosing. i.e Oral presentations, PowerPoint presentations, 3-D demonstrations, videos, etc. * In the Poster presentation, students will set up a poster displaying their research and will present their poster to the judges during a scheduled time. The details of this year's competition are as follows: Date: Thursday, October 24, 2024 Location: Multipurpose Room, UMSU University Centre (Rooms 210 to 224) Time: The judging will take place between 10:00am and 3:00pm, but judges will be assigned a 2-hr window of time closer to the event. For both the Oral and Poster presentation formats, judges will be asked to evaluate approximately 4 to 6 students within their preferred format and category. Instructions and an assessment grid will be provided. The students will compete for a total of $6,500 in cash prizes, split across five categories: Applied Sciences, Creative Works, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
