Upcoming Events: Film Screening & Discussion: Johanna Hedva - A Decade of Sleeping (The UMIH + the Department of Religion) February 24th, 2021 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM CST A journey through the tunnels of mysticism, madness, motherhood, and magic in Johanna Hedva's short film, followed by a discussion of their Minerva the Miscarriage of the Brain. Public Lecture: Podcasts and Digital Storytelling - Dr Leslie McMurtry (University of Salford) February 24th, 2021, 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM CST. A special guest lecture for ENGL2190: Books and Bytes: Literature in the Digital Age. Based on on-going research by Dr. McMurtry surrounding audio drama, podcasts, sound design and more, this lecture delves into the world of digital storytelling and podcasts. On-going Opportunities: UMIH External Grant Support: The UMIH is seeking proposals for its External Grant Support program. An initiative to help researchers in the Faculty of Arts who are seeking external funding for conferences, workshops, colloquia, and other local research events. This program was designed to provide opportunities for scholars to secure support, both cash and in-kind, from the UMIH in order to leverage funds from other agencies. Of Interest: Solo Exhibition by Mariana Muñoz Gomez: A volar entre rocas (To fly between stones) February 20th - April 4th, 2021 The UMIH extends a warm welcome to folks to attend the solo exhibition of artist and recipient of one of many CARE Microgrants. A volar entre rocas consists of photographic, text, and video works about language, history, place, and memory along with a community workshop. This talk is open to people of Asian descent living in Winnipeg who are looking for a community with whom they can organize against anti-blackness and anti-indigeneity. Join Dr. Laura Robson, Oliver-McCourtney Professor of History at Penn State University in a public lecture exploring how a historiographical focus on mass violence – encompassing the concepts of genocide, ethnic cleansing, forced migration, appropriation of resources, mass imprisonment, and forcible denationalization – can help explain the emergence of a dystopian politics of identity across the modern Middle East.
