Upcoming Events: UMIH Research Affiliate Talk - Dr. Melanie Dennis Unrau: Ducks, Syncrude Ducks, and Father Goose: Reading Waterfowl in the Tar Sands Thursday, April 29th 2021. 2:30 PM - 3:30 CT. Using found and erasure poetry as literary criticism, this lecture interprets early-20th-century representations of waterfowl by S.C. Ells, “the father of the tar sands,” in light of the drowning of 1600 ducks on a Syncrude tailings pond in 2008. On-going Opportunities: Call for applications: 2021-22 UMIH Research Clusters, Graduate Fellowship & Research Affiliates - Deadline May 14th, 2021 The UMIH call​s for applications for the 2021-22 Graduate Fellow, Research Clusters and Research Affiliates are now open! These unique opportunities were designed by the institute to support scholars doing important research in the humanities. See attached posters for each call and details on how to apply. More information can also be found on the UMIH website linked here.<https://umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/departments/humanities/> UMIH External Grant Support: The UMIH is seeking proposals for its External Grant Support program. This is an initiative to help researchers in the Faculty of Arts who are seeking external funding for conferences, workshops, colloquia, and other local research events. This program was designed to provide opportunities for scholars to secure support, (both cash and in-kind), from the UMIH in order to leverage funds from other agencies. Please see attached, poster for details on how to apply. Of Interest: Annual Humanities Writing Contest (Dpt of. Psychiatry, Dalhousie University) Medical students and residents are invited to submit reflective essays, prose, poetry, plays, or graphic novellas exploring the intersection of mental health and the humanities to the Dalhousie Department of Psychiatry Annual Student Writing Competition. Other forms of creative writing may also be accepted. Unruly Visions: The Aesthetic Practices of Queer Diaspora: A Lecture by Dr. Gayatri Gopinath (New York University) (UMIH + School of Art Gallery) Thursday, 15th April 2021. 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM CDT "Unruly Visions" continues and expands upon the framing of queer diaspora as it brings queer diaspora studies to bear on studies of visual culture. In so doing, Gopinath suggests new ways of theorizing, seeing, and sensing queerness and diaspora across different geographies and temporalities.
