Film screening and discussion at 7:00 PM CT The Winnipeg Art Gallery and Online Decolonizing Lens presents a screening of Alanis Obomsawin’s most recent films, Bill Reid Remembers, Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair and Upstairs with David Amaram. Upcoming Events: UMIH Graduate Fellowship Lecture “Uncomfortable Elegance: Aesthetics and Representation of Oil Extraction, Production, Consumption, and Disposal in Edward Burtynsky’s Oil Series Photographs” Amal Majumder (ETFM) Thursday, April 13th at 2:30 - 4:00 PM 409 Tier In this talk, Amal will explore and examine the “guilty pleasure” that Edward Burtynsky’s Oil Series photographs incite through the presentation of the sheer scale of the oil extraction, production practices, and process, as well as, its ubiquitousness in our modern way of life underscored by consumerist ambition and appetite for comfort. To complement the reading of Burtynsky’s photographs, Amal will use the Jennifer Baichwal-directed documentary Manufactured Landscape with the hope of getting further insights into the relationality dynamics of modern life and oil. See the attached event poster for more details on Amal's ongoing research. This lecture explores the ways notions of authorship change in social media. By watching YouTube videos about public cancellations for moral missteps, TikTok memes about cats, and Twitch streams of people just hanging out in chairs, this lecture will examine the ways that authors' interactions with their audiences arise in the composition of internet media.
