Dear Friends of UMIH, It’s another exciting three-event week at the Institute for the Humanities. We hope you will find time to join us. Here is what we are looking forward to: TODAY (Monday Oct. 28) at 3:45, join us for a special screening of a NYC stage performance of Lord Byron’s SARDANAPALUS. This screening, which will take place in TIER 408, will be moderated by Dr. Michelle Faubert. UMIH is delighted to partner with the Byron Society of America and the Keats-Shelley Association of America to bring this screening to our campus. Admission and popcorn are free for all. UMIH’s second CRAFTERNOON takes place on Wednesday (Oct. 30). Please join us at 2:30 to learn how to make a rug (or similarly useful item) out of repurposed fabric. We’ll provide the supplies and the instructions you’ll need. There is no cost; zero experience is required; all are welcome. You are, of course, welcome to bring a craft of your own. We’ll meet in Tier 409. And... on Friday Nov. 1 at 2:30, with thanks to Dr. Erin Keating, two speakers from Editors Canada will make a virtual visit to UMIH for a career-themed event: “SO YOU WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL EDITOR? Looking further forward, into late November, please save the date for a very special lecture by Dr. Maria Zytaruk (U of Calgary). To celebrate a term of exploration of hands-on humanities work, UMIH will welcome Dr. Zytaruk on Friday Nov. 29 (2:30, via Zoom). Dr. Zytaruk is a professor, curator, and radio documentary maker and her lecture is tentatively titled “Public Humanities on the Ground: Cultivating Flax for Papermaking in a Campus Community Garden.” And, lastly-- if you’ve been reading Dr. Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, please join us in Tier 409 at 2:30 TOMORROW (Tuesday Oct. 22) for the first meeting of UMIH’s Fall 2024 Book Group. UMIH announces upcoming screening of Sardanapalus, moderated by Dr. Michelle Faubert + upcoming events

Dear Friends of UMIH, You’re invited to a screening of an upcoming stage performance of Byron’s SARDANAPALUS! Moderated by Dr. Michelle Faubert (ETFM) and supported by the Byron Society of America and the Keats-Shelley Association of America, this screening brings an innovative NYC live staging of Sardanapalus to Winnipeg. Our watch party will take place on Monday Oct. 28 at 3:45 PM in Tier 408. Parallel watch parties will be happening in Messolonghi, Thessaloniki, Buenos Aires, Malta, London, Oxford, Tokyo, Namibia, Pretoria, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Santiago, Warsaw, and Shanghai! We will be serving popcorn, admission is free, and all are welcome. Read on for more details about this exciting theatrical event! In other news, please note that tomorrow (Wednesday Oct. 16) is our first UMIH CRAFTERNOON. Drop by Tier 409 any time between 2:30 and 4:00 to try weaving on a mini-loom or bring your own craft to work on. All are welcome; we’ll have supplies and instructions ready and waiting. Craft has a central and arguably understudied role in many humanities disciplines. Whether you want to deepen your knowledge of the role of handmade things in the stories humans tell, engage in an afternoon of craftivism, or just take a break, we look forward to welcoming you. And, as we noted in last week’s message, on Thursday Oct. 24 at 2:30, UMIH will host an online workshop on “MANAGING CHALLENGES AS AN ABD HUMANITIES STUDENT.” Led by Dr. Emily Maggiacomo (U of Toronto), this workshop provides advice for ABD students in the humanities as they work toward the final step of their graduate degree. Participants can expect to learn about the writing process, time management, and helpful resources, as well as coping strategies for the hardships that often accompany writing a dissertation. And, looking ahead to November, with thanks to the Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media, UMIH looks forward to welcoming representatives from Editors Canada for a career-themed event: “SO YOU WANT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL EDITOR? And now, as promised, some information about Lord Byron’s SARDANAPALUS—courtesy of the Byron Society of America: Sardanapalus, set in ancient Assyria, is a testament to Byron’s fascination with history and his ability to weave complex themes into compelling drama. The play explores power, love, and cultural identity through the story of the last Assyrian king— a ruler more interested in pleasure than politics, whose reign faces a dramatic upheaval. Director Raz Golden, known for his innovative approach to classical texts, leads a stellar cast including Amir Arison, Amir Malaklou, and Sanjit De Silva. This production promises to breathe new life into Byron’s verse, making it resonate with modern audiences while preserving its Byronic essence. Thank you! We hope to see you at a UMIH event soon! Reminder: Dr. Tom Hooper speaking this Friday on "Resisting Anti-Queer and Anti-Trans Hate"

Dear Friends of UMIH, We write today to remind you that Dr. Tom Hooper (Department of Equity Studies, York University) will be speaking on "Resisting Anti-Queer and Anti-Trans Hate: Lessons from 1970s Toronto" this Friday (11 October, 2024) at 2:30pm in 108 St. John’s College. Everyone is welcome to attend this event, which is presented by the 2SLGBTQ+ Histories Series. Some details, shared by Dr. Hooper, follow. We hope to see you there! In January 1978 anti-Queer and anti-Trans activist Anita Bryant brought her "Save Our Children" campaign to Toronto. The previous year Bryant had organized against a Miami-Dade, Florida ordinance that protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Bryant's central argument was that this ordinance protected Queer and Trans people from discrimination in employment, including teachers and others who worked with children. The campaign to define Queer and Trans people as a threat to children worked, the Miami-Dade ordinance was repealed. Bryant was emboldened and embarked on a cross-continent campaign that also included a brief time Canada. Queer and Trans communities resisted these campaigns with various tactics. In this presentation I argue that studying our communities' resistance to Anita Bryant could be useful as our communities rally to resist anti-Queer and anti-Trans hate today. UMIH’s Upcoming Crafternoon PLUS Student PD Events

Dear Friends of UMIH, Please mark your calendars to join us in Tier 409 on Wednesday October 16 for our first Crafternoon. We’ll be sharing supplies, tools, and instructions for you to try your hand at weaving: a practice with a very long history and many points of connection to the humanities. You’re also welcome to bring a craft of your own to work on. Stop by anytime on Wed Oct 16 between 2:30 and 4:00 to take a break from your regular workday and connect with material culture. All are welcome. And ... we are pleased to announce two exciting upcoming events for students in the humanities. Please help us spread the word by sharing news of these events with students, especially graduate students. Dear Friends of UMIH, As we greet October, we welcome you to attend upcoming UMIH events. They include an exciting roundtable this Wednesday at which speakers will share reflections on how making things—from paper to beaded objects to photographs—informs their work in the humanities. We also invite you to join our UMIH book group, which will meet twice this Fall to discuss Dr. Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried. Free copies of this book are available for book group members. Please join us to discuss Miles’ critically acclaimed and methodologically innovative study of a handmade relic of a family’s experiences of both enslavement and resilience. Now that October is here, we can also look forward to welcoming you to the first of a trio of Crafternoons, a series of free drop-in crafting sessions exploring the role of hands-on making and material culture in the humanities.
