Dear friends of the UMIH, I would like to bring to your attention to the next series of exciting events brought to you by UMIH and its partners. This lecture will offer a discussion of how they can be used in a lecture or seminar context, and why they have the power to fascinate and motivate. One focus of this lecture will be the special appeal of small, portable objects that were once embedded in social practices. Next week we have a full series of events: -Brown Bag Lunch Series: Understanding Mediums: The Extensions of Spirit Catherine Van Reenen Date: Monday, October 20th, 1pm, 409 Tier Catherine van Reenen is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Religion. Based on a chapter of her thesis, this presentation will highlight conceptual affinities between the media theory of Marshall McLuhan and the 'medium theory' of a group of psychical researchers who focused on a phenomenon known as 'teleplasm', a mysterious substance alleged to ooze from the orifices of entranced mediums. Workshop: AI and Artmaking Erika Jean Lincoln, -Organized by Creative Manitoba and Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA), supported by UMIH -Date: October 22, 7- 8:30pm, online, information available at https://creativemanitoba.ca/event/ai-and-artmaking/#tribe-tickets__tickets-… This online Boot Camp will break down artificial intelligence (AI) into bite-sized pieces that are easy to understand. It will explore the gateways and barriers that AI employs in image and sound generation, and generative text in performance and writing. -Strangely Friends. A History of Cuban-Canadian Encounters Karen Dubinsky (Queen’s University)  Date: Thursday, October 23rd, 2:30pm, 409 Tier In this presentation, Karen Dubinsky will discuss her new book Strangely Friends, which focuses on the often-neglected network of personal and cultural connections between Cuban and Canadians since the early days of the Cuban revolution. It addresses the stories of many Canadians, from teachers and activists, attracted to Cuban a well as of Cubans drawn to Canada. This one-day, mixed-format symposium will be held on November 18th, and the keynote address will be delivered via Zoom at 2:30pm by Prof. Rostyslav Radyshevskyi (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). Dear friends of UMIH, With the semester now in full motion, in this newsletter I would like to bring to your attention some exciting events and opportunities-see attached posters for further information: -Indigenous Peoples and the Lula Administration: The Role of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil Dr. Eloy Terena, Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Wednesday October 1st, 2:30 pm, 108 St. John's College A member of the Terena Indigenous people in Brazil, Dr. Terena is a lawyer and the Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil. He holds doctoral degrees in Law and Anthropology, and a post-doctoral degree in Social Science (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, France). He has worked as the general counsel for the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) as well as in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court. Dr. Terena recently received Brazil's most prestigious award, the Order of Rio Branco, for his work in establishing the first Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil's history. UMIH welcomes applications for 2025-26

Dear Friends of UMIH, Do you have a humanities topic you would like to explore with colleagues here at U of M? Are you a humanities graduate student in search of both funding and professionalization opportunities? Do you know humanities researchers who are not affiliated with the U of M but who would benefit from support from UMIH in the academic year ahead? April is application season at UMIH and we’d be glad for your help spreading the word about the following opportunities. Research Clusters Research clusters are groups of faculty and graduate students from different departments and disciplines with shared research interests. Successful groups are awarded up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval) annually. Goals for Research Clusters include: facilitating meaningful dialogue on humanities-related themes across disciplinary boundaries and fostering and promoting interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Graduate Student Fellows We are delighted to welcome applications for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship. This an annual fellowship valued at up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval). The UMIH Graduate Fellowship will be offered to a UM graduate student who is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is conducting research in the humanities. Applicants need to have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60 credit hours of study. While preference will be given to students at a late stage of their PhD program, all graduate students in the humanities at UM are welcome to apply. The application deadline is April 30, 2025. Affiliates work on a research project outlined in their application and present a colloquium on their research during or soon after their affiliation. These positions are non-stipendiary. Applications are welcome from: post-doctoral fellows, independent scholars, graduate students enrolled in the program generally considered to be the highest in their field (e.g. PhD, LLM, MFA), and individuals in full-time university appointments who wish to spend all or part of a sabbatical leave in Manitoba. Graduate Student Fellows We are delighted to welcome applications for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship. This an annual fellowship valued at up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval). The UMIH Graduate Fellowship will be offered to a UM graduate student who is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is conducting research in the humanities. Applicants need to have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60 credit hours of study. While preference will be given to students at a late stage of their PhD program, all graduate students in the humanities at UM are welcome to apply. The application deadline is April 30, 2025. Affiliates work on a research project outlined in their application and present a colloquium on their research during or soon after their affiliation. These positions are non-stipendiary. Research affiliates may receive up to $3,000 (subject to budgetary approval) to support their research. Applications are welcome from: post-doctoral fellows, independent scholars, graduate students enrolled in the program generally considered to be the highest in their field (e.g. PhD, LLM, MFA), and individuals in full-time university appointments who wish to spend all or part of a sabbatical leave in Manitoba. Dear Friends of UMIH, Programming for Winter 2025 is winding down but we have four exciting events left to look forward to and one of them will take place later today! Here is the information you need: “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon TODAY: Monday March 17; 2:30 – 4:00PM; Tier 409 This workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session took place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections. The second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome to join us today. You do not need to have attended the first workshop to learn from and enjoy today’s event. Let’s have a ball: A Film Screening and Discussion of Paris is Burning Organized and hosted by UMIH Intern Patrick Fermin (Department of History) Tuesday March 18; 2:30 – 4:30PM; Tier 409 Join us to view and discuss Paris is Burning, Jennie Livingston’s celebrated documentary on ball culture in 1980s New York City.
