CARE microgrants: deadline Wednesday, May 13 With QPOC Winnnipeg, the UMIH is thrilled to support 10 microgrants of $300 each for creative projects from U of M students and community members. Please spread the word to your creative friends, colleagues, and students. Write-on-sites have gone virtual to prioritize public health and safety while still maintaining our sense of connection during these isolating times. QPOC and UMIH Microgrants

It's happening! QPOC and UMIH are excited to be launching our first round of ten (10) microgrants! The microgrants are worth $300 each to support creative projects on the topic of CARE during Covid-19. We seek project proposals from students and community members that will explore the multiple dimensions of care, caring, and being careful. This may include the (gendered and raced) labor of healthcare, the physical and/or emotional aspects of care, caring for or about a certain cause, or what it means to be careful in this moment of social distancing, for example. Projects that center queer and critical race approaches will be prioritized. CARE microgrants are aimed at providing swift support for small projects influenced by the humanities (literature, film, theatre, history, philosophy, fine arts, law, music, etc.). Possible creative projects include: --A poem (or a collection of poems) --An essay (or a collection of essays) --A song --A brief drag performance --A brief stand-up comedy set --A photograph (or a collection of photographs) --A personally meaningful recipe and accompanying tutorial video --A painting, drawing, or cartoon --A sculpture, collage, short film, or multimedia project --Other creative ideas welcome Projects must adhere to Manitoba social distancing guidelines. Open to University of Manitoba students and all residents of Manitoba (Indigenous peoples, settlers, and visitors). QTBIPOC applicants are especially welcome. The UMIH voicemail is also being checked regularly if you need to call. Monday and Thursday morning Write-On-Sites have been rebranded to Write-OFF-Sites to prioritize public health and safety. Write at home and stay healthy! While UMIH events have been postponed to prioritize the health and safety of our community we are eagerly working on new and exciting ways to deliver programming while distancing measures are in effect, and we can't wait to share our plans with you soon! Rescheduled or re-imagined events to look forward to will include UMIH's partnership with QPOC and Red Rising Magazine for Laugter is Medicine: Youth Comedy Night; talks by UMIH Affiliates, Adrian Thieret and Celiese Lypka; and Wet'suwet'en Solidarity: Local Resonances, a screening of the short film "Invasion" followed by a panel discussion. Dear Friends of the UMIH, February 12th is the national Day of Action for Contract Academics. According to CAUT, about 1 out of every 2 undergraduate students is taught by contract academics and, on average, contract academics are paid 1/3 less per course than regular professors. (https://www.caut.ca/bulletin/2017/10/numbers-contract-academic-staff-canada) The UMIH was incredibly lucky to host a visit by Dr. Sarika Bose, chair of CAUT's Contract Academic Staff Committee, earlier this term to share with us her insightful research and action plans.
