Hello everyone, I alert you to the following wonderful event, organized by the UMIH Research Cluster on Power and Resistance in Latin America. I encourage you all to attend: The Interdisciplinary Research Cluster on Power and Resistance in Latin America Presents INDIGENOUS ORGANIZATION AND CONFLICT IN CAUCA, COLOMBIA: THE CASE OF THE INDIGENOUS REGIONAL COUNCIL OF CAUCA (CRIC) 307 Tier Building, Fort Garry Campus, University of Manitoba May 28, 2:30pm This event will involve a visiting delegation of Colombian Indigenous leaders. A representative from the group will present on the history of struggle and organization of the Nasa people of Cauca, Colombia, in particular in relation to the Consejo Regional Indígena del Cauca (CRIC). They will also discuss the Plan de Vida-Proyecto Nasa, which is their regional plan for autonomy and development. Good afternoon everyone, I hope your week is off to an excellent start! Here are a few UMIH-related events to draw your attention to: The first is a reminder that this coming Wednesday, May 15th, at 7pm at X-cues, UMIH is helping to host a panel discussion to celebrate the publication of Dr. Julie Guard's new book Radical Housewives: Price Wars and Food Politics in Mid-Twentieth-Century Canada. The panelists are Dr. Guard (University of Manitoba), Dr. Janis Theissen (University of Winnipeg), and Dr. Rhonda Hinther (Brandon University), moderated by Dr. Deborah McPhail (University of Manitoba). We encourage you all to join us! You can find the poster attached. The second is this coming Sunday (May 19) at 3:00pm in the Buchwald Room at Millennium Library. There will be a Preview/Launch event for "The Modern Reception of the Medieval Saga of the Sworn Brothers," a special volume of the journal Scandinavian-Canadian Studies, which is about to be published (Volume 26, Spring 2019). Several contributors will be there to discuss topics such as the place of Icelandic literature in world literature and its international influence in Winnipeg and elsewhere. All are welcome to attend - but please note that (for those who may be smuggling exotic animals, for example) there is a security scan at the entrance. Thanks are due to the Icelandic Department and UMIH for their support of the research being presented here, as well a to AASSC who run the journal (scancan.net). Here are some upcoming events and Calls we would like to bring your attention to: Land of Oil and Water: Aboriginal Voices of Life on the Oil Sands 10thAnniversary Screening Monday, April 29, 2019 Cinematheque (200 Arthur Street) 7-8pm (poster attached) Critical Environments Research Group Spring Workshop Tuesday, April 30, 2019 1:00-4:00pm, 320 Sinnott Building (poster attached) Call for UMIH Affiliates, Research Clusters, and Graduate Fellowships Deadline: May 3, 2019 (posters attached) Call for Collaboration Home Movie Day Project Seeking people skilled with vintage film technology for a Home Movie screening event tentatively planned for the fall of this year or next year. Seeking: -Individuals who are capable projectionists with 8mm, 16mm, Super 8 or similar technology are wanted (preferably at least 2). -Individuals who are experienced with handling and inspecting old film reels are also wanted. Should be capable of determining if a film reel is damaged beyond repair based on factors such as odor, damage, brittleness, curling etc. Someone who is knowledgeable on how to repair damaged film reels is also desirable. Roles may overlap, and someone who is skilled in both areas is very much welcome. Interested parties may contact Felicia Pulo at umpulo(a)myumanitoba.ca, tacopulo(a)hotmail.com, or 204-391-4441. About Home Movie Day: Home Movie Days are events that are held at local venues across world that celebrate amateur filmmaking and document the lives of everyday individuals. The events screen home-based movies from both professional institutions and families or individuals from the community. Vintage equipment is often provided by the event runners to let the owners of submitted films view the films perhaps for the first time in years. It is also a chance for other community members to see the amateur film work of their neighbors and to learn more about the importance of film preservation and how they can do it at home. Please note that I will be filling in for the Spring, so if you have any questions about these events or Calls, please do not hesitate to contact me.
