Dear Friends of UMIH, Programming for Winter 2025 is winding down but we have four exciting events left to look forward to and one of them will take place later today! Here is the information you need: “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon TODAY: Monday March 17; 2:30 – 4:00PM; Tier 409 This workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session took place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections. The second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome to join us today. You do not need to have attended the first workshop to learn from and enjoy today’s event. Dear Friends of UMIH, We start this week’s newsletter with an invitation from colleagues in Asian Studies and History to attend the following event: States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization Wednesday March 12; 2:30pm; 409 Tier The History 2025 Assiniboia Lecture & Asian Studies Invited Speaker Series present Dr. Lydia Walker speaking on States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization. After the Second World War, national self-determination became a recognized international norm, yet it only extended to former colonies. Groups within postcolonial states that made alternative sovereign claims were disregarded or actively suppressed. Foregrounding little-known regions in South Asia and Southern Africa and the networks that connected them to global politics, States-in-Waiting illuminates the un-endings of decolonization—the unfinished and improvised ways that the state-centric international system replaced empire, which left certain claims of sovereignty perpetually awaiting recognition. We also draw your attention to the following day-long event organized by Visiting Scholar Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn. Identity and Poetics of Ukrainian Canadian Literature: An International Conference Keynote speaker: award-winning author Myrna Kostash Friday March 14, 8:30AM – 5:15PM, 307 Tier This day-long investigation of Ukrainian Canadian Literature is supported by the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies, the Shevchenko Foundation, and the Faculty of Arts. Focusing on coptic stitch, we’ll explore methods for creating, collating, and stitching a booklet of blank paper for you to take home and use after the workshop. All are welcome. “Bleeding Hearts: Missions, Philanthropy, Gender, and Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan, 1890-1920” A Presentation by Karen Brglez (Department of History / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday March 6; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Sentimentality was at the core of female missionary efforts in Saskatchewan. This presentation explores the strategic use of sentimental rhetoric by female missionaries who worked in the Canadian Indian Residential School System and on First Nations reserves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Tipācimowinan: Ahki sigwa keteyak / Stories: land and the long-ago ones A Presentation by Carla Kennedy (Indigenous Studies / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday February 13; 2:30- 4:00PM; On Zoom. Anishinaabeg perspectives encompass a holistic understanding of relationships between mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of self, alongside links between human and more-than-human relations over multiple generations. In this talk, Carla Kennedy will share stories from her grandmother’s teachings on elements of Indigenous knowledge and applied sciences, stories told while checking snares for rabbits in the bush that surrounds the Qu’Appelle valley. This week’s UMIH News: a look back at Fall 2024

Dear Friends of UMIH, I write today to thank you for your support for UMIH this fall. We’ve explored a wide range of topics, skills, and methods that matter to the humanities. They have included, among many other things, a contemporary staging of an historical drama, professional editing skills, the media history of hobbyist woodworking, strategies for dissertation writing, connections between beading and storytelling, Ukrainian diasporic writing, and the crafting of haiku. We temporarily transformed a boardroom into a studio space to explore weaving methods and block printing traditions and we made time to learn from the many people who generously contributed to UMIH’s programming as speakers or event hosts. Those contributors include (from the University of Manitoba): Dr. Brenda Austin-Smith, Dr. Alison Calder, Dr. Warren Cariou, Dr. Sean Carleton, Dr. David Churchill, Dr. Sarah Elvins, Dr. Michelle Faubert, Dr. Erin Keating, Dr. Len Kuffert, Dr. Mike Sampson, and Dr. David Watt. We can also look forward to presentations by UMIH affiliates Dr. Youcef Soufi and Rachel Shields and by Graduate Fellows Karen Brglez and Carla Kennedy. It’s going to be another great term at UMIH. As always, I welcome your suggestions for ways that UMIH can support your teaching, learning, research, and outreach in the humanities. Dear Friends of UMIH, We are pleased to share a Call for Papers on behalf of Visiting Scholar Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn (Kyiv National Linguistics University). A conference exploring IDENTITY AND POETICS OF UKRAINIAN CANADIAN LITERATURE will take place on March 14, 2025; proposals are due to Dr. Shymchyshyn by Feb. 15, 2025.
