Upcoming Events: UMIH Graduate Fellowship Presentation by Amal Majumder (ETFM) An Anthroposcenic Aesthetic: A Critical Reading of the Poetics and Politics of Oil Extractions in Kate Beaton’s Ducks vis a vis Edward Burtynky’s Oil Series Photographs Tuesday, March 26th, from 2:30 - 4:30 PM Room 409 Tier Building In this presentation, Amal will examine Kate Beaton’s graphic novel Ducks, complementing it with an analysis of Edward Burtynsky’s oil series photographs. Beaton’s recollection of the part of her life spent in the extraction sites in north-eastern Alberta and its artwork that complements the tone and narrative content of the memoir de-aestheticizes and de-mythologizes the narrative of “progress and development” that are often passed as the natural course of human existence and even aestheticized by the popular culture and the literary and artistic tradition in which Burtynsky’s work allegedly takes part. By examining the differing perspectives and forms of these two texts, Amal aims to provide a critical understanding of the impact of the sheer scale of extractive practices on human lives and ways. Queer In Translation A Film Screening of "Lie with Me" 2022, hosted by Patrick Fermin (UMIH Undergraduate Student Intern, History) Thursday, March 26th, from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM in Room 408 Tier Building Patrick Fermin (History) will lead a discussion centered around representations of Queer love in International cinema following the screening of Lie with Me, 2022, co-written and directed by Olivier Peyon, based on the 2017 novel of the same title by Philippe Besson. Salma Serry is a food history researcher, artist, and filmmaker, pursuing a PhD in History at University of Toronto. She is also the founder of @Sufra_Archive, a digital library and social media platform dedicated to West Asian and North African food history and culture. She was recently awarded the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and Arab Council for Social Sciences grant for her ongoing project that documents culinary ephemera from the region. UMIH Graduate Fellow Presentation by Jonathan Hildebrand Water, Indigenous Presence, and Mennonite History in Manitoba’s “Barren Prairielands” Thursday, March 21st, from 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM How is water remembered and written about in a place that has been called the first European agricultural settlement on the Canadian prairies “without direct access to a major body or current of water”? How is Indigenous presence and land use addressed in a region where settler histories report “very little contact” between Indigenous peoples? And do themes of water and Indigenous presence overlap in any way? Using the Mennonite “West Reserve” region of southern Manitoba as a case study, Jonathan Hildebrand examines local histories and commemorations of the area to address these questions, and to better understand how Indigenous land becomes widely understood as settler space. Access, Intersectionality, and Resistance in Disability Culture Dr. Robert Mcruer (Professor, George Washington University) Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), Office of Equity Transformation Wednesday, March 6th from 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM in 409 Tier Building Dr. McRuer discusses the idea of “one-dimensional disability,” a disability identity that does not consider solidarity with other movements for social justice.
