She will discuss the barriers and opportunities she has experienced and her inspirations. Zilla Jones (she/her) is an African-Canadian writer living and working on Treaty 1 territory. The Power and Resistance in Latin America Research Cluster presents: Pachamama Politics : A Book Lecture by Dr. Teresa Velasquez (U of California San Bernardino) October 17th, 2:30-3:30 PM CT 409 Tier Building In this book talk, Pachamama Politics, Velásquez discusses her research among a group of Ecuadorian farmers organized to defend community watersheds from a proposed Canadian gold mine project. Her work exposes the rifts over government plans to pursue extraction in the name of Sumak Kawsay (to live well), and how farmers transformed their relationship to Indigeneity in unexpected ways. Ayu Saraswati (Professor of Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; University of Hawai'i) Tuesday, October 3rd 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM 409 Tier Boardroom Dr. L. Ayu Saraswati will use a transnational feminist autoethnography method of travelling to twenty countries in one year to offer thought-provoking theories and life-transforming ways to deal with pain outside of the neoliberal framework. This lecture invites us to reframe pain as a political and transnational feminist object and asks how we can carry it in a more humane, life-sustaining, enchanting, and feminist way. Dr. Saraswati is an award-winning teacher, speaker, consultant, and professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Hawai'i. Dr. Saraswati will also facilitate a hands-on writing workshop on October 4th (10:00 am - 12:00 pm), on transnational feminist autoethnography. We look forward to sharing a poster and more details for this anticipated event soon. To complement the reading of Burtynsky’s photographs, Amal will use the Jennifer Baichwal-directed documentary Manufactured Landscape with the hope of getting further insights into the relationality dynamics of modern life and oil. By watching YouTube videos about public cancellations for moral missteps, TikTok memes about cats, and Twitch streams of people just hanging out in chairs, this lecture will examine the ways that authors' interactions with their audiences arise in the composition of internet media. The Food Matters Research Cluster Presents: Poetry, Philosophy and Potatoes by Rebecca Earle March 9th, 2023 at 2:30 PM CT. In-person at 307 Tier Building Hosted by Jennifer Dueck (History), this lecture is especially open to students. Rebecca Earle's research work focuses on the cultural history of Spanish America and early modern Europe. She is interested in how ordinary, everyday activities such as eating or dressing shape how we think about the world and how others view us. Her early work was rooted in a very specific part of the world (southern Colombia). Recently, she studies the movement of ideas and practices across larger geographies. Her first book Spain and the Independence of Colombia tried to explain the collapse of Spanish colonialism in early nineteenth-century Colombia. Subsequent work took on ampler periods and broader geographies. We are thrilled to extend this seminar to folks and hope to see you there. The poster coming soon.
