Dear friends of the Humanities, Welcome to a new week Upcoming Events: The Power & Resistance in Latin America Cluster Presents: The Politics of Agricultural Cooperativism in Brazil: A Case Study of the Landless Rural Worker Movement (MST) by Wilder Robles (Rural Development, Brandon University) Friday, January 26th, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM in room 409 Tier Join us on Zoom using the embedded link <https://umanitoba.zoom.us/j/61315120331?pwd=ZTZXU1FNTFRkWHBOVHorakVtcWlZUT09> This presentation examines peasant-led agricultural cooperative formation in Brazil from a political economy perspective. It takes as a point of reference the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, or Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST). The paper identifies the MST’s main periods of cooperative formation within their particular contexts. Each of these periods oriented and, eventually, reoriented the MST’s overall cooperative efforts. Despite these achievements, the long-term sustainability of this cooperative project depends significantly on the MST’s capacity to overcome structural barriers and, most importantly, obtain long-term support from state and non-state actors. Through reading, prompts and a Q&A period, we will playfully dive into ways outlier forms can push boundaries. A handout and reading list will also be provided. A finalist for the 2022 Governor General's Literary Award in nonfiction, Rowan’s debut memoir, Persephone’s Children: A Life in Fragments also co-won the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book (2022).
