In this workshop, participants will learn about various structures that can be used to enhance their writing. Through reading, prompts and a Q&A period, we will playfully dive into ways outlier forms can push boundaries. A handout and reading list will also be provided. As this is a generative writing class, please bring a pen and paper. Rowan McCandless writes from Treaty 1 territory. A finalist for the 2022 Governor General's Literary Award in nonfiction, Rowan’s debut memoir, Persephone’s Children: A Life in Fragments also co-won the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book (2022). For more information on McCandless' work, see the attached event poster. There will be paper and pens available for accessibility. Coffee and light refreshments provided

U of W Faculty will lead students and academic staff in a reading and discussion based on assigned texts–historical, critical, visual, and theoretical–that offer multiple perspectives on the cultural and historical contexts for the genocide in Palestine. This event will be moderated by Kerry Sinanan with a blessing and opening by Elder Sharon Pelletier. There will be contributions from Dr. Alyson Brickey, Dr. Celiese Lypka (Métis), Dr. Aarzoo Singh, Dr. Kerry Sinanan, Dr. Chigbo Arthur Anyaduba, Professor Heather Milne, Dr. Sharon Wall and more.

Dr. Teresa Velásquez, Anthropology, California State University, San Bernardino

In this book talk, Pachamama Politics, Teresa Velásquez discusses her research among a group of Ecuadorian farmers organized to defend community watersheds from a proposed Canadian gold mine project. Her work exposes the rifts over government plans to pursue extraction in the name of Sumak Kawsay (to live well), and how farmers transformed their relationship to Indigeneity in unexpected ways. This book lecture is also supported by the Department of Anthropology and CERG (Critical Environments Research Group). Please see the attached poster for more details.

Ayu Saraswati will use a transnational feminist autoethnography method of travelling to twenty countries in one year to offer thought-provoking theories and life-transforming ways to deal with pain outside of the neoliberal framework. This lecture invites us to reframe pain as a political and transnational feminist object and asks how we can carry it in a more humane, life-sustaining, enchanting, and feminist way.

In this hands-on writing workshop, participants will learn why personal stories can be the most convincing tool to argue for political transformation, how to have a better understanding of their projects, and what kinds of tools they can employ to preempt writer's block–even before they start writing their projects.

Dr. Enstad will explore the dynamic struggle over concepts of nature and economic futures beyond left/right conflict. She uses a fight over a proposed hog factory farm in Polk and Burnett Counties, Wisconsin, to analyze the competing world-making discourses and community-making food practices around the concept of feeding the world. The Institute for Humanities is thrilled to host Dr. L. Ayu Saraswati for a spotlight lecture on October 3rd from 3:30 - 4:30 PM CT in 409 Tier Building, on the topic of feminism, pain, and grief. Dr. Saraswati is an award-winning teacher, speaker, consultant, and professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Hawai'i. Dr. Saraswati will also facilitate a hands-on writing workshop on October 4th (10:00 am - 12:00 pm), on transnational feminist autoethnography. We look forward to sharing a poster and more details for this anticipated event soon.
Programming from the UMIH Research Clusters includes visiting lectures by Dr. Teresa Velasquez (California State University, San Bernardino) and Dr. Nancy Enstad (University of Wisconsin, Madison). Dr. Enstad's talk is scheduled on October 5th from 3-5 p.m. at 307 Tier Boardroom. We look forward to sharing more programming soon. Please look out for details in the coming weeks.
