Hello, all: I understand if no one is reading email from this address for a while, but I thought I would pass on a written compliment from a non-academic participant to the conference. It is similar to others I have heard, and I am thinking here only of community people who are not academics. I think it was clear that the academics enjoyed it, but this is a little different. It suggests that we succeeded in making the event accessible. Hi Scott, I’m copying this to the committee since I’m not really on top of the recording issue. As I remember it, the conditions were simply that he record it for us, giving us, and Jane, final approval of any edits to the recording. We would own it, but once it is posted, he could show it on his youtube channel. For this we would pay him. I forget how much, but we didn’t think he would charge us very much. Does anyone remember if we discuss a concrete figure? I my memory correct, everyone. Please chime in. This association was a community-based women’s organization with ties to the communist and social democratic left that, from 1937 until the early 1950s, led a broadly based popular movement for state control of prices and made other far-reaching demands on the state. As radical consumer activists, the Housewives engaged in gender-transgressive political activism that challenged the government to protect consumers’ interests rather than just those of business while popularizing socialist solutions to the economic crises of the Great Depression and the immediate postwar years. Julie Guard’s exhaustive research, including archival research and interviews with twelve former Housewives, recovers a history of women’s social justice activism in an era often considered dormant and adds a Canadian dimension to the history of politicized consumerism and of politicized materialism. Radical Housewives reinterprets the view of postwar Canada as economically prosperous and reveals the left’s role in the origins of the food security movement.
