Hi Scott, I’m copying this to the committee since I’m not really on top of the recording issue. As I remember it, the conditions were simply that he record it for us, giving us, and Jane, final approval of any edits to the recording. We would own it, but once it is posted, he could show it on his youtube channel. For this we would pay him. I forget how much, but we didn’t think he would charge us very much. Does anyone remember if we discuss a concrete figure? I my memory correct, everyone. Please chime in. mini-book launch proposal

Hi All: I haven't given this much thought until now, having been up to my eyeballs in teaching and then marking, but I am guessing that there must be a 30-minute space on the program for me to have a mini-launch of my recently published book, Radical Housewives: Price Wars and Food Politics in Mid-Twentieth Century Canada. It came out in March and has not yet been launched, and I would love to have an opportunity to launch it at our conference. I was thinking there would be a half-hour when we gather at the Goodwill. I could set up a table and give a short description and people who were, for some strange reason, uninterested could talk in a different section of the room. Or maybe there's another spot on the program I haven't thought of. Hi everyone, I'm forwarding an email from Gina McKay about a "United Way Winnipeg & Labour" table at the conference. I had meant to bring this up at the meeting, but forgot. My feeling is that I think this is fine. It does raise some policy issues, though, for the conference. First is, if they are in the publishers' exhibit area, should they have to pay the $200 - my feeling is no. Where this becomes an issue is if other groups want an information table. As yet, we haven't had any requests from political groups, etc., for tables. But what if we do? My feeling is that we have to allow them to display, but in a hallway somewhere. Is the United Way different? Might others be different? This may turn out to be a non-issue, but I thought it worth raising and sounding people out. Bus tour issue

Here's our latest issue. There seems to be an issue of capacity for the bus tours. According those working on it, we are limited to smaller busses (max: 38 passengers), and to four busses. This means, of course, only 152 places. We can discuss this a bit on this listserv, but if that's the case, it's fewer than the number registrants. Clearly we cannot offer the tours to the public. The finance committee will discuss the cost implications of this and report back. Finally, Krishna, can you remove the "open to the public" designation beside the bus tours on the webpage? Registering for the bus tours

I’ve been thinking of issues related to the bus tours, and before we put up the on-line registration for the them, we need to determine the maximum number of seats that we will be making available. Unfortunately, neither Paul nor Sharon could make yesterday’s meeting, as you know, but I want to catch them up on the conversation. The Riley Fund Grant is no longer covering the Thursday evening event at the Ukrainian Labour Temple since our registration has reached a point that that the capacity of the venue no longer makes it feasible to have it open to the public, which the grant stipulates. That event has to come out of our general funds. It does free up Riley money for the Wednesday opening and the bus tours. The Riley grant is relatively stringent in saying that not only does an event have to be free and open to the public, we cannot prioritize conference goers. We discussed how to work this, and we will make an on line registration system available to all, and advertise it, for the same day. We do, however, want to try to ensure that the conference goers, at least if they act relatively quickly, have a good shot at getting on the busses. That means we want to, and can afford, to have more busses available. We recognize some congestion at some of the sites, but we should try to figure out how to handle this, if we can, and busses will be staggered, any least a bit, since it takes some time to get people on them. We could even say that a couple of the busses leave 20 or 30 minutes later than the first. What I need to know, relatively quickly, what the cut off number is for the bus tours, since we can register people beyond the number of places available. This is more or less up to Sharon and Paul who have been working on this. Questions regarding Saturday Bus Tours

Good morning: I am confirming some information with Winnipeg Transit regarding the booking that Paul Jenkins originally made for us. (This booking has been switched to my name.) Can someone please confirm for me this morning the following timeline: * 12:30 pm - roundtable ends * Is there lunch following the roundtable and before we board buses? If so, what's the time range? * The online program indicates bus tour is 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm. * What time do we actually want to DEPART from UofW? * How long is the actual tour? * This will then determine our return time to UW. I will take this info and add in unloading time and time to and from the garage for the buses so that we can get a clearer estimate for this cost - as the driver time portion of the estimate/payment is logged from the time they leave the garage to the time they return. I will need a map/itinerary provided to me so I may give this to Transit so the drivers can be familiar with the route prior to the event. Who can provide this to me? (Not needed today but soon.) Also, our current booking is for 5 buses (185 seats). I've asked them to quote for both 5 and 6 buses in case we need to increase our capacity. (Will be determined once we finalize this Saturday a procedure to track attendance for the bus tour.) Transit indicated that moving up from 5 to 6 buses would not be a problem if we need to. Budget: A deposit has not been paid for this booking and Transit confirmed to me that one is not needed. They just bill after the event. Finally, Transit indicated that since this is a conference we may be eligible for a grant that would provide us a discount. He's going to send me the info on it to see if we qualify. I know it's last minute, but I assume that we are announcing or handing out flyers about free events? In any case, we have to be careful about the Ukrainian Labour Temple advertising because of limited capacity. We will probably have to ask members of "the public" to register to hear the keynote. I assume that the Wednesday evening will be okay since they know the issue, but given the discussion about Thursday capacity, it is perhaps best that we let people know that there is limited room, and perhaps we can lead them to our website for more information (particularly if we decide to set up a system of registration). Riley funding reminder

In the budget distributed last meeting, the following events are listed as to be paid for by the Riley fund: 1. Saturday bag lunch ($2500) 2. Thursday keynote speaker fees, transportation, and hospitality ($6000) 3. Thursday night event catering ($5500) 4. Wednesday reception refreshments ($2800) 5. Strike tour buses ($3000) 6. Thursday night event buses ($2500) A reminder from the Riley committee, with whom I just met and to whom I am answerable for the funds: We cannot spend Riley funds on anything that is not both FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, and the Riley logo must be prominently featured on/at events they fund. I'm not sure what the status of #3 and #6 are, but I think we had decided on Good Will and X-Cues? We can't use this money for Good Will because of the cover charge. Nor can we use it for #1 unless we give free lunches to everyone on the bus tour (not just conference registrants). And we can't use it for #4 or #5 if there is any preferential access to spaces for conference registrants.

Riley Grant events

Hi all, This came up briefly at the last meeting, but we never got back to it. The Riley grant from the U of Winnipeg, which has to be spent on events open to the public, is going to be directed to three events in the conference: the Wednesday evening panel on commemoration, the Thursday evening event at the Ukrainian Labour Temple with the keynote, and the Saturday afternoon bus tours. We need to figure out how to advertise these events, and what it means for our planning. A prime audience for the wednesday evening are the folks who are attending the series at the Library. Can we produce a leaflet (Krishna) for them? Where else can we advertise it. This is a potentially useful thing, because we may attract people who decide to register and stay for the conference. The Wednesday event could be quite popular, which raises another issue. I am keeping an eye on registrations and was going to report immediately after early bird registration ends April 1. But this event may attract a significant number of other people which suggests that we may already know that Convocation Hall isn’t large enough. Janis: you may want to report this to the event planning people. I will get back to you when registration itself hits 200, but we should let them know that we are planning and event that isn’t limited to registrants. For Thursday evening, our main audiences will be accessed through the MFL and Labour Council. Sharon and Jeff can talk to the MFL about this? Perhaps we could quickly make an announcement to put in the next 1919 newsletter? And there may be some affiliates who are particularly interested in McAlevey. Who organized her last visit to the labour council? Finally, we need to be careful about the bus tours. If we throw it open, we could be swamped and our delegates wouldn’t be able to get on the bus. I’m going to suggest that we have a signup sheet, or print tickets. If our delegates want to go, they can sign up. And we can announce at the conference that they can bring friends and family, but they have to sign them up. And we can allow people who attended the Wednesday and/or Thursday evening events (from the “public”) to sign up as well. This way it’s open, but not out of control And we’ll have a list and can adjust the number of busses. Does this work for people? Ideas welcome! Fight for 15 Friday Night event

Hi everyone, I just wanted to make a formal proposal to the committee about a Friday night event. Fight for 15 Manitoba (FF15MB) will be organizing a social at X-cues (551 Sargent ave) on the night of May 10th. It will be a casual event meant for socializing and a networking opportunity for FF15MB. We'll have a 50\50 to raise money for FF15MB. We might organize a pool tournament depending if people are interested. In terms of advertising and arrangements for event FF15MB will be handling that. The only requests are if the event could be placed in the conference schedule and if the committee could cover the cost of the space booking ($200). Thank you for the consideration. Scott Price

A Very Easy Friday Night Option...

Hi Everyone, A very easy Friday night opportunity has presented itself that will serve to reduce the Friday night workload for us (ie, the need to compile a list of suggested places for folks to go since planning an official event is looking like a no-go). I had a chance to talk to the manager at the Good Will on Portage (http://thegoodwill.ca/), and he said they would be very pleased to welcome us for an official pub night there (5-9-ish). It’s an easy walk from UW and, I believe, fully accessible. The have food and drink that would accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements. Our conference sessions end at five, and we could direct folks there then. They will have some bands going on at 9, and our folks would either have to pay the $10 cover to stay for that (so the bands can be paid) or head out. Interestingly, the gig they had planned for that night seems to have fallen through, and it sounds (but this is not confirmed) that they might be looking to do one of their “Bands as Bands” events. For those of you who don’t know, this is where they get a few local bands to interpret the music of well-known artists. This is definitely not confirmed, but when I raised it, the manager said it might be possible for them to try to shape this Bands as Bands around labour-flavoured acts like Springsteen or, GASP, Billy Bragg! I gave Jason a heads-up on this possibility, since he was holding the WECC for us that night, and it looks like there’s a possibility that the WECC could cosponsor this with the GW. I guess they’ve done things like this before. So that would be a nice bonus, which we’ll still need to explore. I’m waiting to hear back from the GW with more info on all this (but mostly that they can definitely accommodate us from 5-9 for the pub night portion). Before this went any further with this, though, I wanted to bring this to y’all to make sure I should proceed. Rhonda

Hello everyone, The entertainment sub-committee explored many options and reached the following decision: The 1919 committee will co-sponsor the CCPA Boots Riley event on Saturday evening. Registrants will have time to attend both the Riley event and the Labour Temple social. For Friday night, the conference schedule will provide a list of local events, venues, and restaurants people can go to on their own. We decided this based on the lack of time to organize something worthwhile and with the conference schedule already packed as it is we decided to give people the chance to do whatever it is they want to do. *Unless a **majority of the committee objects **before Friday 4:00 PM, *we will proceed with contacting the CCPA so that our conference logo can be included on the ads for the event that are going out on Monday. We will also ask the CCPA to set aside a number of reduced-price tickets for conference attendees, and contact registrants to act quickly to get a ticket. Scott Price
