Hi everyone, As we approach the holidays and the end of 2010, here are some tips on resources and staying healthy for the holidays: 1) HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES AV CATALOGUE: The 2011 version of the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries Audiovisual Catalogue is now available in PDF. Please go here[1] for more info. 2) HEALTH TRENDS, A NEW ANALYSIS TOOL FROM STATISTICS CANADA: Health Statistics Division, in partnership with the Census Internet Development Team, has developed the online Health Trends product as a follow-up to the June 2009 release of the Health Profile. It promises to be an extremely useful tool for health organizations, governments at all levels, health service providers, researchers, and students. For more info, go here[2]. 3) ENHANCED ACCESS FOR PUBLICATIONS BY THE CANADIAN CENTRE FOR POLICY ALTERNATIVES: For a limited time the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives[3] is providing free access to all its publications. Electronic Access to STAT!Ref Now Available

We are pleased to announce that as a MHIKNET Library card holder you now have electronic access to STAT!Ref. STAT!Ref includes medical textbooks and resources, such as ACP Medicine, The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, Family Medicine: Principles and Practice, DSM-IV 2000, Stedman's Medical Dictionary, Oxford Textbook of Psychotherapy, Goldfrank's Toxicologic Emergencies, and Therapeutic Modalities in Rehabilitation. In the coming months we will be working to increase the number of resources within this collection. In our latest renovation update we anticipate the new library fully open for business once again, with bright new spaces for work, study, and collaboration. In this issue of Info-Rx we want to draw your attention to some trends in the provision of health care information. Starting with the more traditional sources of information ? research journals ? we report on the latest impact factors for the top 20 journals in your field. Along with the developments in ebooks and web-based educational resources, you have probably noticed the growing use of mobile devices, particularly the iPhone, in health care. There are many excellent apps already available, but did you know that the library provides access to a number of our licensed online resources in iPhone-friendly format? In Part 1 of a series we look at five subscription-based services for the iPhone: AccessMedicine, Lexi-Comp, MD Consult, Procedures Consult, and UpToDate. Do you use social media? If not, you probably know many who do. We discuss how health care professionals, organizations, and libraries are using social media today. October was Medical Librarians Month. The 2010 celebration focused not only on the important role of the librarian as a partner in health care, but also examines the critical issue of health literacy and the contribution of librarians to local, national and international interventions to improve health literacy. We review some of the grim facts about health literacy and provide you with a select list of health literacy resources, both in print and online. Finally, a warm welcome to Dr. Judith Littleford, who has been appointed Course Coordinator, Information Literacy and Biomedical Informatics at the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Littleford will be working closely with librarians to develop instructional strategies and resources across the medical curriculum. Canadian Patient Safety Week is November 1-5, 2010. You can register for FREE with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute to receive a package of promotional items: http://www.patientsafetyinstitute.ca/English/Initiatives/cpsw/Pages/default. aspx Canadian Patient Safety Week increases awareness of patient safety issues and aims to share information about best practices in patient safety with healthcare providers, patients and their families. The theme of Canadian Patient Safety Week - Ask. Listen. Talk. - promotes the importance of communication between and among patients, clients, consumers and providers and applies to all healthcare settings and sectors.
