Requesting Literature Searches Did you know that you can request a literature search on any topic or question you have? Our health sciences librarians will conduct a professional literature search for you, searching the most appropriate databases, library catalogues, and other Internet resources available through the University of Manitoba Libraries. We will send you a list of references by email, mail, fax, or in-person pick-up. Select the citations that are of interest to you and we will send you the full text documents. Books and other library materials are delivered to Manitoba Health and RHA clients through the mail, and full-text journal articles are emailed, mailed, or faxed. In our latest renovation update we anticipate the new library fully open for business once again, with bright new spaces for work, study, and collaboration. In this issue of Info-Rx we want to draw your attention to some trends in the provision of health care information. Starting with the more traditional sources of information ? research journals ? we report on the latest impact factors for the top 20 journals in your field. Along with the developments in ebooks and web-based educational resources, you have probably noticed the growing use of mobile devices, particularly the iPhone, in health care. There are many excellent apps already available, but did you know that the library provides access to a number of our licensed online resources in iPhone-friendly format? In Part 1 of a series we look at five subscription-based services for the iPhone: AccessMedicine, Lexi-Comp, MD Consult, Procedures Consult, and UpToDate. Do you use social media? If not, you probably know many who do. We discuss how health care professionals, organizations, and libraries are using social media today. October was Medical Librarians Month. The 2010 celebration focused not only on the important role of the librarian as a partner in health care, but also examines the critical issue of health literacy and the contribution of librarians to local, national and international interventions to improve health literacy. We review some of the grim facts about health literacy and provide you with a select list of health literacy resources, both in print and online. Finally, a warm welcome to Dr. Judith Littleford, who has been appointed Course Coordinator, Information Literacy and Biomedical Informatics at the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Littleford will be working closely with librarians to develop instructional strategies and resources across the medical curriculum. Canadian Patient Safety Week is November 1-5, 2010. You can register for FREE with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute to receive a package of promotional items: http://www.patientsafetyinstitute.ca/English/Initiatives/cpsw/Pages/default. aspx Canadian Patient Safety Week increases awareness of patient safety issues and aims to share information about best practices in patient safety with healthcare providers, patients and their families. This listserv has been created so that we can send updates about library services and resources to Manitoba Health staff, Regional Health Authorities staff, and physicians in Manitoba who have registered for a library account at the University of Manitoba Libraries. In this first message, we have included information about the new clinical practice guideline launched this week by Osteoporosis Canada, and the latest issue of Info-RX: Newsletter of the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Libraries. Osteoporosis Canada launches new clinical practice guidelines Osteoporosis Canada has released its 2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis in Canada, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ). The new guidelines represent a paradigm shift in the prevention and treatment of osteoporotic fractures, moving the focus from treating low bone mineral density (BMD) to better identifying fractures caused by weakened bones (fragility fractures). Those of you who have been away for a while will see us in a very different light. The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library has been under renovation since February, and there is still much to do. As we approach the end of September we are engaged in an extensive overhaul and move of our collections upstairs on the 300 level. Journals are being unpacked and restored to waiting shelves. New seminar rooms are being painted and readied for public use. Staff offices have been created with impressive glass walls, some of which are still to be installed. Our public workstation area has new furniture and a more open design. Renovations are due to be completed in October. For stories and more pictures, follow our special renovations blog. In this issue of Info-Rx we bring you more information about the changes to the library's physical space and news of staff changes. We also want to alert you to an upcoming Open Access Forum, which takes place on October 18. Prof. Michael Geist, a nationally known advocate for copyright reform and free public access to taxpayer-funded research, will speak and also take part in a panel. This is an event that should interest students and academics in all disciplines. If you are planning to publish your research we offer a helpful guide to preparing for publication. What journals should you consider? How do you access impact factors? What resources are there to assist the researcher? Read our comprehensive review. As you know, PubMed has a new interface. Did you know that some of its most useful features have also been extensively revised? If you have been following the MS treatment controversy, you should see our round-up of the latest research on the issue. People are looking for health information on the web in greater numbers every year; but are they being misled by commercial interests or biased viewpoints? See our article on the top consumer health websites in Canada and the U.S. for links to the most reliable information. Again, thank you for your patience during the Neil John Maclean Library's transformation. The next few weeks will continue to be challenging as we reach the final stages of construction. When it is finished, the library promises to be a much more interesting and useful space - a true learning commons.
