Dear Friends of UMIH, I write today to thank you for your support for UMIH this fall. We’ve explored a wide range of topics, skills, and methods that matter to the humanities. They have included, among many other things, a contemporary staging of an historical drama, professional editing skills, the media history of hobbyist woodworking, strategies for dissertation writing, connections between beading and storytelling, Ukrainian diasporic writing, and the crafting of haiku. We temporarily transformed a boardroom into a studio space to explore weaving methods and block printing traditions and we made time to learn from the many people who generously contributed to UMIH’s programming as speakers or event hosts. Those contributors include (from the University of Manitoba): Dr. Brenda Austin-Smith, Dr. Alison Calder, Dr. Warren Cariou, Dr. Sean Carleton, Dr. David Churchill, Dr. Sarah Elvins, Dr. Michelle Faubert, Dr. Erin Keating, Dr. Len Kuffert, Dr. Mike Sampson, and Dr. David Watt. Of course, I also want to thank all who attended talks, participated in hands-on crafting sessions, or made time to prepare for and participate in our book group. We will be sharing our winter schedule with you early in the new year. By way of a sneak peek, we can let you know that we look forward to collaborating with the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture on several events. We can also look forward to presentations by UMIH affiliates Dr. Youcef Soufi and Rachel Shields and by Graduate Fellows Karen Brglez and Carla Kennedy. It’s going to be another great term at UMIH. As always, I welcome your suggestions for ways that UMIH can support your teaching, learning, research, and outreach in the humanities. Dear Friends of UMIH, We are pleased to share a Call for Papers on behalf of Visiting Scholar Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn (Kyiv National Linguistics University). A conference exploring IDENTITY AND POETICS OF UKRAINIAN CANADIAN LITERATURE will take place on March 14, 2025; proposals are due to Dr. Shymchyshyn by Feb. 15, 2025. A UMIH CRAFTERNOON: BLOCK PRINTING This Wednesday (Nov 27 at 2:30), join us for a UMIH Crafternoon dedicated to block printing, a technique with a very long and rich history. We have tools for 18 makers to join us; first come, first served. We provide the supplies; there is no cost; zero experience required. Take your printed pieces and the block you carve home with you. If you prefer, bring a craft of your own. We’ll meet in Tier 409. All are welcome. Here’s some visual inspiration: [cid:5973cad6-27e6-40c2-ae2e-ebc39211e874] SPECIAL LECTURE: CULTIVATING FLAX FOR PAPERMAKING This Friday (Nov 29 at 2:30 on Zoom), we celebrate UMIH’s semester-long exploration of hands-on humanities with a special lecture: “Public Humanities on the Ground: Cultivating Flax for Papermaking in a Campus Community Garden” with Dr. Maria Zytaruk (University of Calgary). Here are some details: This lecture treats the more than year-long project that Zytaruk and a group of students, university staff, and community members undertook to cultivate flax for hand papermaking in the campus garden. In cultivating flax during a time of climate crisis, and against the backdrop of smoke-filled skies due to forest fires, questions about the sustainability of paper and books, in the hand-press period and today, became pressing matters. And lastly, a quick reminder for UMIH Book Group members that our second meeting, devoted to the second half of Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried, takes place on Thursday, the 28th in Tier 409 at 2:30. Dear Friends of UMIH, We hope your Fall Reading Week is off to a good start. We are pleased to share the following UMIH news with you. POETRY EVENTS Next week is a busy week for the Ecology, Canadian Poetry, and Labour Research Cluster (led by Dr. Jamie Paris). On Monday November 18 at 2:30, the Cluster will host an in-person reading by Winnipeg poet Kristian Enright. Kristian Enright is the author of Sonar (2012) and Postmodern Weather Report (2023). Join us in Tier 409. All are welcome. On Wednesday November 20 at 2:30, the same Cluster will welcome Professor Mark Nowak (Manhattanville University) to present a talk via Zoom at 2:30pm. Professor Nowak is the author of Social Poetics (2020) and Coal Mountain Elementary (2009). His talk is titled “Working at the Edges of the Anthropocene.” Again, all are welcome to attend. Engaging Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, Heminge’s The Fatal Contract, and Milton’s Paradise Lost, Dr. Urvashi Chakravarty’s talk will both examine the intersection (and co-construction) of race and gender in early modern England and explore the articulation and authorization of frameworks of heritable slavery in the Atlantic world. From the sixteenth century to about the mid nineteenth century, paper in Europe was made from linen and hemp rags. Timothy Barrett has written of the ways in which rag paper embeds an “intimacy between the fibre and its human handlers.” Zytaruk’s project made tangible the labour, agricultural and creative, that coalesces in each piece of handmade paper. Dear Friends of UMIH, This Wednesday at 2:30 in Tier 409, we deepen UMIH’s semester-long engagement with material culture with an OBJECT LESSONS roundtable featuring four speakers. Join us for a scholarly show-and-tell featuring objects selected and analyzed by Dr. Brenda Austin-Smith (ETFM), Dr. Mike Sampson (Classics), Dr. Sean Carleton (History and Indigenous Studies), and Dr. Carla Manfredi (English at U of Winnipeg). Looking ahead, we are also pleased to announce that the Ecology, Canadian Poetry, and Labour Research Cluster (led by Dr. Jamie Paris) will welcome Professor Mark Nowak (Manhattanville University) to present a talk via Zoom on Wednesday Nov. 20th at 2:30pm. Please save the date. Professor Nowak is a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2015 Lannan Fellow. His book Social Poetics (2020) is central to understanding the idea of working-class poetry in North America. He is also an accomplished poet and social critic, and his book Coal Mountain Elementary (2009) has become essential reading for anyone interested in the white working class. More details to follow. UMIH announces upcoming screening of Sardanapalus, moderated by Dr. Michelle Faubert + upcoming events

Dear Friends of UMIH, You’re invited to a screening of an upcoming stage performance of Byron’s SARDANAPALUS! Moderated by Dr. Michelle Faubert (ETFM) and supported by the Byron Society of America and the Keats-Shelley Association of America, this screening brings an innovative NYC live staging of Sardanapalus to Winnipeg. Our watch party will take place on Monday Oct. 28 at 3:45 PM in Tier 408. Parallel watch parties will be happening in Messolonghi, Thessaloniki, Buenos Aires, Malta, London, Oxford, Tokyo, Namibia, Pretoria, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Santiago, Warsaw, and Shanghai! We will be serving popcorn, admission is free, and all are welcome. Read on for more details about this exciting theatrical event! In other news, please note that tomorrow (Wednesday Oct. 16) is our first UMIH CRAFTERNOON. Drop by Tier 409 any time between 2:30 and 4:00 to try weaving on a mini-loom or bring your own craft to work on. All are welcome; we’ll have supplies and instructions ready and waiting. Craft has a central and arguably understudied role in many humanities disciplines. Whether you want to deepen your knowledge of the role of handmade things in the stories humans tell, engage in an afternoon of craftivism, or just take a break, we look forward to welcoming you. And, as we noted in last week’s message, on Thursday Oct. 24 at 2:30, UMIH will host an online workshop on “MANAGING CHALLENGES AS AN ABD HUMANITIES STUDENT.” Led by Dr. Emily Maggiacomo (U of Toronto), this workshop provides advice for ABD students in the humanities as they work toward the final step of their graduate degree. Participants can expect to learn about the writing process, time management, and helpful resources, as well as coping strategies for the hardships that often accompany writing a dissertation. And now, as promised, some information about Lord Byron’s SARDANAPALUS—courtesy of the Byron Society of America: Sardanapalus, set in ancient Assyria, is a testament to Byron’s fascination with history and his ability to weave complex themes into compelling drama. The play explores power, love, and cultural identity through the story of the last Assyrian king— a ruler more interested in pleasure than politics, whose reign faces a dramatic upheaval. Director Raz Golden, known for his innovative approach to classical texts, leads a stellar cast including Amir Arison, Amir Malaklou, and Sanjit De Silva. This production promises to breathe new life into Byron’s verse, making it resonate with modern audiences while preserving its Byronic essence. Thank you! We hope to see you at a UMIH event soon!
