Dear friends of UMIH, in this week's newsletter, we want to bring your attention to a couple of forthcoming events: Indigenous Peoples and the Lula Administration: The Role of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil Dr. Eloy Terena, Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Wednesday October 1st, 2:30 pm, 108 St. John's College A member of the Terena Indigenous people in Brazil, Dr. Terena is a lawyer and the Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil. He holds doctoral degrees in Law and Anthropology, and a post-doctoral degree in Social Science (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, France). He has worked as the general counsel for the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) as well as in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court. Dr. Terena recently received Brazil's most prestigious award, the Order of Rio Branco, for his work in establishing the first Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil's history. There will be refreshments available after the presentation. We also your attention to the following event organized by UIMIH Research Affiliate Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn The Great Overlooked - Prof. Leonid Biletskyi as Teacher and Scholar This is a one-day symposium honoring Leonid Biletskyi (1882-1955), an influential Ukrainian literary scholar, educator, and cultural leader whose work in Winnipeg left a lasting legacy. Dear friends of the UMIH, We hope that the beginning of the academic year is going well for all of you. We are ready for another great year of exciting activities at the Institute for the Humanities. We are in the process of confirming several events that we will circulate soon. In the meantime, we want to bring to your attention the following event. UMIH Research Affiliate Mariya Shymchyshyn is organizing a one-day symposium honoring Leonid Biletskyi (1882–1955), an influential Ukrainian literary scholar, educator, and cultural leader whose work in Winnipeg left a lasting legacy. This one-day, mixed-format symposium will be held on November 18th, and the keynote address will be delivered at 2:30pm by Prof. Rostyslav Radyshevskyi (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). UMIH welcomes applications for 2025-26

Dear Friends of UMIH, Do you have a humanities topic you would like to explore with colleagues here at U of M? Are you a humanities graduate student in search of both funding and professionalization opportunities? Do you know humanities researchers who are not affiliated with the U of M but who would benefit from support from UMIH in the academic year ahead? April is application season at UMIH and we’d be glad for your help spreading the word about the following opportunities. Research Clusters Research clusters are groups of faculty and graduate students from different departments and disciplines with shared research interests. Successful groups are awarded up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval) annually. Goals for Research Clusters include: facilitating meaningful dialogue on humanities-related themes across disciplinary boundaries and fostering and promoting interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Graduate Student Fellows We are delighted to welcome applications for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship. This an annual fellowship valued at up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval). The UMIH Graduate Fellowship will be offered to a UM graduate student who is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is conducting research in the humanities. Applicants need to have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60 credit hours of study. While preference will be given to students at a late stage of their PhD program, all graduate students in the humanities at UM are welcome to apply. The application deadline is April 30, 2025. Join us to get inspiration and advice on how you can bring an experiential approach to your teaching. All are welcome. Here is the information you need: “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon TODAY: Monday March 17; 2:30 – 4:00PM; Tier 409 This workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session took place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections. The second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome to join us today. You do not need to have attended the first workshop to learn from and enjoy today’s event. Dear Friends of UMIH, We start this week’s newsletter with an invitation from colleagues in Asian Studies and History to attend the following event: States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization Wednesday March 12; 2:30pm; 409 Tier The History 2025 Assiniboia Lecture & Asian Studies Invited Speaker Series present Dr. Lydia Walker speaking on States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization. After the Second World War, national self-determination became a recognized international norm, yet it only extended to former colonies. Groups within postcolonial states that made alternative sovereign claims were disregarded or actively suppressed. Foregrounding little-known regions in South Asia and Southern Africa and the networks that connected them to global politics, States-in-Waiting illuminates the un-endings of decolonization—the unfinished and improvised ways that the state-centric international system replaced empire, which left certain claims of sovereignty perpetually awaiting recognition. We also draw your attention to the following day-long event organized by Visiting Scholar Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn. A UMIH Crafternoon: Book Binding for Beginners Thursday March 13; 2:30 – 4:00PM; Tier 409 Our final Crafternoon of 2024-2025 will introduce you to the basics of book binding. Focusing on coptic stitch, we’ll explore methods for creating, collating, and stitching a booklet of blank paper for you to take home and use after the workshop. No registration required; no experience required. All materials and instruction ARE provided. Space is limited; please arrive no later than 2:40. All are welcome. “Bleeding Hearts: Missions, Philanthropy, Gender, and Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan, 1890-1920” A Presentation by Karen Brglez (Department of History / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday March 6; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Sentimentality was at the core of female missionary efforts in Saskatchewan. This presentation explores the strategic use of sentimental rhetoric by female missionaries who worked in the Canadian Indian Residential School System and on First Nations reserves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Please mark your calendars and join us at one or more of the following events. “Impersonal Love: Theorizing Antisocial Maternity in the Wake of Leo Bersani” A Presentation by Dr. Rachel Shields (McMaster University / UMIH Research Affiliate) Thursday February 27; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 In this talk, Dr. Shields will explore connections between Leo Bersani's queer theory and views on motherhood that resist conventional pressures of “maternal love.” Please attend to learn from Dr. Shields as she explores critiques of modern motherhood and analyzes both literary works and films that showcase alternative, “antisocial” maternal approaches. All are welcome. “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” A Free Two-Part Hands-On Workshop with CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon Monday March 3; 2:30- 4:00PM; UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections Monday March 17; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 This two-part workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session, to take place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections, will introduce participants to power, politics, and possibilities in the archives, while the second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome. “Bleeding Hearts: Missions, Philanthropy, Gender, and Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan, 1890-1920” A Presentation by Karen Brglez (Department of History / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday March 6; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Sentimentality was at the core of female missionary efforts in Saskatchewan. This presentation explores the strategic use of sentimental rhetoric by female missionaries who worked in the Canadian Indian Residential School System and on First Nations reserves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All are welcome. A UMIH Crafternoon: Book Binding for Beginners Thursday March 13; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Our final Crafternoon of 2024-2025 will introduce you to the basics of book binding. Focusing on coptic stitch, we’ll explore methods for creating, collating, and stitching a booklet of blank paper for you to take home and use after the workshop. No registration required; no experience required. All materials and instruction ARE provided. Space is limited; please arrive no later than 2:40. All are welcome.
