UMIH is pleased to share news of two upcoming events with you: Playing with Wor(l)ds: A Reflection and Celebration with Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon Monday April 7; 2:30pm; 109 St. John’s College CCWOC- the Center for Creative Writing and Oral Culture- invites you to attend a final reception celebrating work undertaken during Winter 2025 by Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon. Sonja will reflect upon her time at UM, share some of what she accomplished during her writing time, and reveal a quilt made from poetry by participants of the “Dear Alice” workshop. This event is free and open to the UM community and public. No registration required; light refreshments will be served. Dr. Shiri Pasternak is Associate Professor of Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is the author of Grounded Authority: The Algonquins of Barriere Lake Against the State (2017), and co-editor of Disarm, Defund, Dismantle: Police Abolition in Canada (2022). Her talk will take us through the resource hinterlands of hard rock northern Ontario mining, Maritime monopoly, the Family Compact, and NWT extraction to show how Canada’s colonial policies carved out a system of economic rent structured on Indigenous dispossession and global networks of capital. UMIH welcomes applications for 2025-26

Dear Friends of UMIH, Do you have a humanities topic you would like to explore with colleagues here at U of M? Are you a humanities graduate student in search of both funding and professionalization opportunities? Do you know humanities researchers who are not affiliated with the U of M but who would benefit from support from UMIH in the academic year ahead? April is application season at UMIH and we’d be glad for your help spreading the word about the following opportunities. Research Clusters Research clusters are groups of faculty and graduate students from different departments and disciplines with shared research interests. Successful groups are awarded up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval) annually. Goals for Research Clusters include: facilitating meaningful dialogue on humanities-related themes across disciplinary boundaries and fostering and promoting interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Graduate Student Fellows We are delighted to welcome applications for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship. This an annual fellowship valued at up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval). The UMIH Graduate Fellowship will be offered to a UM graduate student who is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is conducting research in the humanities. Applicants need to have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60 credit hours of study. While preference will be given to students at a late stage of their PhD program, all graduate students in the humanities at UM are welcome to apply. The application deadline is April 30, 2025. Affiliates work on a research project outlined in their application and present a colloquium on their research during or soon after their affiliation. These positions are non-stipendiary. Applications are welcome from: post-doctoral fellows, independent scholars, graduate students enrolled in the program generally considered to be the highest in their field (e.g. PhD, LLM, MFA), and individuals in full-time university appointments who wish to spend all or part of a sabbatical leave in Manitoba. Experiential Teaching and Learning in Humanities Classrooms: A Roundtable Conversation Tuesday March 25; 2:30 – 3:30PM; Hybrid event: Tier 307 + on Zoom Co-hosted by UMIH and The Office of Experiential Learning (CATL) Our speakers— Dr. Danielle Dubois (Religion), Dr. Christine Stewart (Women’s and Gender Studies), and Dr. David Watt (English, Theatre, Film & Media) — will share examples of experiential teaching and learning in the Faculty of Arts. Join us to get inspiration and advice on how you can bring an experiential approach to your teaching. All are welcome. Here is the information you need: “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon TODAY: Monday March 17; 2:30 – 4:00PM; Tier 409 This workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session took place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections. The second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome to join us today. You do not need to have attended the first workshop to learn from and enjoy today’s event. Dear Friends of UMIH, We start this week’s newsletter with an invitation from colleagues in Asian Studies and History to attend the following event: States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization Wednesday March 12; 2:30pm; 409 Tier The History 2025 Assiniboia Lecture & Asian Studies Invited Speaker Series present Dr. Lydia Walker speaking on States-in-Waiting: A Counternarrative of Global Decolonization. After the Second World War, national self-determination became a recognized international norm, yet it only extended to former colonies. Groups within postcolonial states that made alternative sovereign claims were disregarded or actively suppressed. Foregrounding little-known regions in South Asia and Southern Africa and the networks that connected them to global politics, States-in-Waiting illuminates the un-endings of decolonization—the unfinished and improvised ways that the state-centric international system replaced empire, which left certain claims of sovereignty perpetually awaiting recognition. We also draw your attention to the following day-long event organized by Visiting Scholar Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn. Identity and Poetics of Ukrainian Canadian Literature: An International Conference Keynote speaker: award-winning author Myrna Kostash Friday March 14, 8:30AM – 5:15PM, 307 Tier This day-long investigation of Ukrainian Canadian Literature is supported by the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies, the Shevchenko Foundation, and the Faculty of Arts. Focusing on coptic stitch, we’ll explore methods for creating, collating, and stitching a booklet of blank paper for you to take home and use after the workshop. This presentation explores the strategic use of sentimental rhetoric by female missionaries who worked in the Canadian Indian Residential School System and on First Nations reserves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Please mark your calendars and join us at one or more of the following events. “Impersonal Love: Theorizing Antisocial Maternity in the Wake of Leo Bersani” A Presentation by Dr. Rachel Shields (McMaster University / UMIH Research Affiliate) Thursday February 27; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 In this talk, Dr. Shields will explore connections between Leo Bersani's queer theory and views on motherhood that resist conventional pressures of “maternal love.” Please attend to learn from Dr. Shields as she explores critiques of modern motherhood and analyzes both literary works and films that showcase alternative, “antisocial” maternal approaches. The UMIH invites you to attend the following events. One of them will share the knowledge of a graduate student from the Faculty of Arts while the other is designed to support graduate students’ professional development. Tipācimowinan: Ahki sigwa keteyak / Stories: land and the long-ago ones A Presentation by Carla Kennedy (Indigenous Studies / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday February 13; 2:30- 4:00PM; On Zoom. Anishinaabeg perspectives encompass a holistic understanding of relationships between mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of self, alongside links between human and more-than-human relations over multiple generations. In this talk, Carla Kennedy will share stories from her grandmother’s teachings on elements of Indigenous knowledge and applied sciences, stories told while checking snares for rabbits in the bush that surrounds the Qu’Appelle valley. Book Launch featuring UMIH Research Affiliate Dr. Youcef Soufi Thursday February 6; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 Please join us to celebrate the launch of Homegrown Radicals: A Story of State Violence, Islamophobia, and Jihad in the Post-9/11 World (NYU Press). At this event, Dr. Soufi will share an overview and reading from his book. The event will include a moderated discussion. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome. Riffing on Tariffs: Trump, Trade Wars, and the Politics of Uncertainty/Chaos Friday February 7; 1:00 - 2:30 PM; St. John’s College, Room 108 A roundtable moderated by Dr. David Churchill and featuring Dr. Sarah Elvins, Dr. Jordan Howell, Dr. Len Kuffert, and Dr. Jorge Nállim Are you wondering about possible impacts of the recent US tariffs on Canadian goods? Has anything like this ever happened before? Join us for a roundtable discussion about current and past tariff wars in North and South America. Four UM History profs will talk about historical contexts for the events of the past week. Come with your questions! Prairie Abolition: Here and Now Friday February 7 (Fort Gary Campus) – Saturday February 8 (WestEnd Commons) A colloquium on anticolonial abolition across the prairies This two-day colloquium, hosted by the Prairie Abolition Research Cluster, focuses on sharing what we currently already know, feel, have, and are doing to create anticolonial and more just futures here and now. Panels will feature guest speakers to help facilitate discussion with all in attendance. Students, staff, faculty, and community member are invited to join and share. Small Things: Cross-Stitch Provocations Monday, February 10 and Monday, February 24; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 In partnership with the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, the UMIH invites you to attend a pair of hands-on workshops led by CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon. In the course of two gatherings, participants will learn about cross-stitch histories and activisms, create their own cross-stitch pieces, and then place them in public locations across campus. All materials will be supplied. No experience with cross-stitch required; no need to register. All are welcome to join us to explore the creative and craftivist potential of a needle and thread. Digital Public Scholarship: Benefits and Pitfalls Tuesday, January 28; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Zoom This online panel discussion, supported by the University of Manitoba Strategic Initiatives Fund, welcomes faculty from Canada and the United States to discuss their experiences sharing their academic work through digital platforms. The following panelists will offer advice useful to both faculty and students interested in learning more about the practices of digital research dissemination: Dr. Philip Chase (County College of Morris), Dr. Dorothy Kim (Brandeis University), Dr. Kim TallBear (University of Alberta), and Dr. Vanessa Warne (University of Manitoba). Paper, Scissors, Glue: Paper Quilling, Cobweb Cards, and Collage Thursday, January 30; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 Join us at our first UMIH Crafternoon of the winter term to deepen your knowledge of the importance of making and material culture to the humanities. We’re going to explore a trio of paper-based practices: paper quilling, three-dimensional card making, and collage. All materials and instruction provided; no registration required. Imagining a Sack: Journeying with Ashley’s Sack Monday, February 3; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 In partnership with the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, the UMIH invites you to attend a hands-on workshop engaging Tiya Miles’ All That She Carried. This workshop will be led by CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon. While Miles’ work is an inspiration for this event, no knowledge of her book is required. All materials will be supplied. Dr. Boon recommends participants bring along a copy of a book of importance to them. All are welcome to come and create.
