In this workshop, we'll explore the building blocks of humour, joke-writing, and comedy as well as our own individual lived experiences, perspectives, and ideas to exercise our comedic muscles and explore our authentic voice as writers. Through a combination of listening, watching and, most importantly, writing, we'll focus in on how humour can be used to challenge and re-imagine the rules, structures and practices that we have been taught – and hopefully have a few laughs along the way. The Writing Towards a Just World Research Cluster presents: The Role of the Writer in the World by Jacob Scheier Wednesday, October 12th from 12 PM - 2 PM CT Hybrid event: in-person at 307 Tier Boardroom & online via Zoom We are super excited to invite folks to this hybrid workshop hosted by the Writing Towards a Just World Research Cluster with CCWOC's writer in residence, Jacob Scheier. In this workshop, we will explore the big question—why write? More specifically, we will discuss the role the writer and/or poet potentially plays in our society, particularly when it comes to social justice. We will look at our own writing (participants are encouraged to bring in their recent work(a poem, story, work of creative nonfiction) and consider the cultural impact we would like it to have and what techniques and devices we can employ to better achieve such aims. Folks are welcome to attend this workshop in person at 307 Tier or stream it via Zoom. There will be ASL interpretation avaialble for this event. This conversation will help guide W.R.E.N.C.H's work, and support Winnipeggers to consider the question as well. Speakers Blandine Tona and Levi Foy will explore how this question is useful in considering the challenges of climate change, and poverty and its impacts. Dear Friends of the hUManities, Welcome back to a new term! We hope that the holidays were restful for folks. Welcome to the 2022-23 Members of the UMIH: The UMIH is pleased to welcome and introduce community members and friends to the 2022-23 research affiliates, research clusters, and graduate fellows. This year, the Institute is excited to support two research clusters: the Writing towards a Just World Research Cluster coordinated by Dr. Jocelyn Thorpe (Women's and Gender Studies) and the Food Matters Research Cluster by Dr. Jeongmin Kim (History). The Institute will also be supporting one research affiliate this year: Dr. Melanie Dennis Unrau (SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow, Columbia University) In addition, we are excited to welcome this year's UMIH Graduate Fellows Jessie Krahn (ETFM) and Amal Majumder (ETFM). We come out of hiatus to inform folks that the deadlines for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship, Research Clusters and Affiliateship program, are extended to midnight on Monday, May 16th, 2022. Considering how the circumstances of the current school year differ from previous years, we hope this extension provides more time and encourages interested folks to send in applications.
