Dear Friends of the hUManities, Welcome back to a new term! We hope that the summer was restful. Welcome 2021-22 Members of the UMIH: The UMIH is pleased to welcome and introduce community members and friends to the 2021-22 research affiliates, research clusters and graduate fellow. This year, the Institute is excited to support four research clusters: Death as Transformative Experience headed by Dr Simone Mahrenholz (Philosophy), Graphic Narrative Beyond the Gutter headed by Dr Lucas Tromly (ETFM), Power and Resistance in Latin America headed by Dr Jorge Nallim (History), and Occupy Bartleby headed by Dr Dana Medoro (ETFM). The Institute will also be supporting three research affiliates: Dr Caitlin McIntyre (Visiting Assistant Professor, State University of New York Buffalo), Dr Melanie Dennis Unrau (SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow, Columbia University) and Dr Shoshannah Bryn Jones Square (Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium, The Social Justice Centre). In addition, we are excited to welcome this year's UMIH Graduate Fellow, Tasheney Francis Holness (Linguistics). Stay tuned for announcements of our Undergraduate Student Interns. Dear Friends of the hUManities, Welcome to a new week Upcoming Events: Dance Like Nobody’s Watching: Student Experiences of Covid 19 in Canada. (UMIH + Desautels Faculty of Music + The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning + XiE + Department of Religion + University of Manitoba Faculty of Arts) In the fall of 2020, during the heart of the global pandemic, students from Dr. Brenda Cantelo’s Religion and Dance course in the Faculty of Arts collaborated with students from Dr. Gordon Fitzell’s eXperimental Improv Ensemble (XIE) in the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba to create a dance video on the theme of living through COVID-19. Each dance sequence and musical track was performed remotely by individual students and edited together to form a unified expression of our collective pandemic experience. Opportunities: Seeking MA/MFA Student Assistant position (3-year term) for research related to the African Movie Festival in Manitoba (AM-FM) scheduled this year for September 24 to 25, 2021. The project is in need of an MA/MFA graduate student who is interested in research in the area of films, history, festivalization, culture, education or any discipline that is consistent with the aforementioned goals and objectives. This three-year project offers a stipend of $6000 per year. The student will receive training in festivalization and cultural production exhibition. They will help realize co-curation of the festival in Manitoba. PI Dr. Sheila Petty, University of Regina will co-supervise the student with Dr. Ben Akoh, the AM-FM festival director and include the student in the team training overall. The student will (co-) present a paper at a Canadian conference. Travel may be involved. Cost of any travel, per diems and accommodation, will be covered by the project. Dear Friends of the hUManities, Happy Friday! The UMIH is an Institute headed by two settlers of color residing and working in Treaty 1. To honor a week of mourning with our friends & family in the Indigenous communities across Noth America, the UMIH newsletter scheduled every Monday was postponed. As we grief, we encourage settlers like us, to each reflect on our relationship to the Land we occupy and actively practice showing genuine love, honor and respect not only in light of the uncovering of recent atrocities in the Kamloops Indian Residential School but as an on-going and continued effort. Upcoming Events: Care Microgrant Panel Discussion (UMIH + MAWA + QPOC Winnipeg) Wednesday, June 16th, 2021. 7 PM - 9 PM CT. Artists and art-lovers who identify as BIPOC are invited to an online gathering featuring guest panelists, Hassaan Ashraf & Bella Luna moderated by Ekene Maduka, to talk about the work in an upcoming in-person exhibition entitled Care at MAWA (June 16th to July 9th) and the issues it raises. The panel will explore both the possibilities and limits of regarding artmaking as a type of research, particularly within anti-colonial, anti-racist practices. Event Recap: Giveaway: g u e s t 17 Issue Launch edited by UMIH Research Affiliate Dr. Melanie Dennis Unrau Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the launch of g u e s t 17, edited by UMIH Research Affiliate Dr. Melanie Dennis Unrau on the theme of petropoetics. The poets featured in this issue are oil workers, relatives of oil workers, residents of the oil patch or the petrostate, activists, environmentalists, cultural workers, researchers, concerned citizens, and artists.
