Subject: Funding Opportunity for Students Doing Northern Research
Good morning everyone,
I would like to advise you of a funding opportunity that some of your students may be eligible for. Please share widely with all who may benefit.
The Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP) will help students pay for transportation and living costs while obtaining practical fieldwork experience in the North. Students will have the opportunity to develop interest and expertise on northern issues, and improve their research skills.
To be eligible, students must be:
* Undertaking field research in the Canadian North (see the map<https://www.canada.ca/en/polar-knowledge/fundingforresearchers/maps.html> for NSTP's definition of "North")
* A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
* Enrolled in Graduate Studies; or
* A senior undergraduate student whose northern field work research is tied to their thesis
To apply, students can find the online application and further information by following this link to our graduate awards database<http://webapps.cc.umanitoba.ca/gradawards/index.asp?WCI=SearchForm&WCE=brow…>. I have also attached the FAQ document supplied by the NSTP.
Take care.
Roxanne

(Graduate) Willy Wiebe Graduate Fellowship in Agricultural and Food Sciences
Oct 1, 2019 11:30 PM
Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Awards
(Graduate) Willy Wiebe Graduate Fellowship in Agricultural and Food Sciences<https://universityofmanitoba.desire2learn.com/d2l/lms/dropbox/user/folder_s…>
Due October 1 at 11:30 PM
Through a testamentary gift from Willy Wiebe, a farmer from the rural municipality of Rhineland in Manitoba, an endowment fund of $450,000 has been established at the University of Manitoba to support a graduate fellowship in breeding and research in Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat.
The fellowship, valued at the available annual income, will be offered to a student who:
(1) is enrolled as a full-time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in a Master's or Ph.D. program in Agricultural and Food Sciences;
(2) as a Master's student, achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in the last 60 credit hours completed in their undergraduate program or, as a Ph.D. student, achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.75 in their Master's program;
(3) demonstrates an interest in and potential for research;
(4) has identified an advisor in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences who is willing to support a project in breeding and research in Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat.
The fellowship cannot be held with another award valued at or higher than the current level of the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship that is offered at the recipient's level of study (Master's or Ph.D. level).
Applicants will be required to submit a completed application form on or before the designated deadline date. Application forms will be made available from the Office of the Dean in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.
The fellowship can be renewed once by the same recipient in a Master's program, and twice for the same recipient in a Ph.D. program. The fellowship recipient will receive a renewal provided they are making satisfactory progress in their program. In years when a renewal of the award is made, no new award will be offered. If, in the judgment of the selection committee, no applicants meet the award criteria in a given year, the award will not be made in that year.
The selection committee will be the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Awards Committee.
This agreement may be amended by the mutual consent of the donor (or designate) and the University of Manitoba. All such amendments shall be in writing. In the absence of the donor (or designate), and providing all reasonable efforts have been made to consult, the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba has the right to modify the terms of this award if, because of changed conditions, it becomes necessary to do so. Such modification shall conform as closely as possible to the expressed intention of the donor in establishing the award.
Reminder:
As per the UMGFMGS Award Holders Guide:
UMGF/MGS holders are required to apply to an external agency (such as NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR) at every possible opportunity in order to continue payments.
Thanks.

NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s Program
The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.
The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.
The CGS M program supports up to 3,000 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal agencies: CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. The selection process and post-award administration are carried out at the institutional level, under the guidance of the three agencies. Students submit their application to the institution at which they intend to hold their award using the Research Portal.
Please read and follow application information and requirements carefully: http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp

Hi Everyone!
My name is Nate Ort, I am a graduate student in the Department of Plant Science here at the University of Manitoba. I had communicated this message to graduate students in my department, and Martha suggested I pass it along to you as well. Furthermore, I encourage you to share this with other students, professors, advisors or anyone. I am open and honest with my mental health, and have no problem sharing my story.
A service at the U of M that I became aware of earlier this year is the Psychological Service Centre. The Psychological Service Centre is a training clinic for Clinical Psychology Graduate Students enrolled at the University of Manitoba. All services are provided at no charge. This is something that I started going to a few months ago to address symptoms of anxiety disorder. It is easily one of the best things I have ever done. I believe that taking care of yourself, and your mental health should be everyone’s top priority.
Below are links for more information, or to download the referral form (which I believe must be submitted in person). If you have any questions about the program please reach out to them; however, if you feel comfortable speaking to me about it I am more than happy to share my experience with anxiety and the PSC service. In academia these issues are all around us, and almost no one is talking about them.
If your mental health has been impacted by academia, or your mental health is effecting your school work - you are not alone.
