Agriculture Awards * Home<https://agawards.agric.umanitoba.ca/index.php/home/common> * View Awards<https://agawards.agric.umanitoba.ca/index.php/home/award> Print<https://agawards.agric.umanitoba.ca/index.php/home/award/view/118> Award Details ________________________________ Award Information Name: Stewart Pugh External Study Scholarships Description: Mr. Stewart Granger Pugh has bequeathed $300,000 to the University of Manitoba, to establish an endowment fund in support of students in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Mr. Pugh received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from the Faculty of Agriculture and Home Economics in 1940. The available annual interest from the fund will be used to offer a variable number of scholarships, valued up to a maximum of $2,000, to defray transportation costs for undergraduate and graduate students who plan to travel to another university or institution, in Canada or abroad, to further their studies in agricultural or food sciences. This may involve study or research for one academic term or participation in a short-duration study tour used as a credit course towards their degree or diploma. The scholarships will be offered to students who: (1) are enrolled full-time (minimum 24 credit hours) in the third or fourth year of study in a degree program, second year of study in the diploma program, or have completed one year of an MSc program or PhD program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba; (2) have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0. Candidates must provide: (1) an outline of the course of study they wish to pursue including (a) justification for the external study, (b) their goals with respect to professional and personal development as a result of the external study, and (c) estimated transportation cost; (2) a letter of support from their thesis advisor or undergraduate program committee chairperson indicating that he/she approves of the institution at which the candidate will undertake his/her program of study/research. Caldwell and H. Ruth Gardner Caldwell Fellowship in Sustainable Ag/Agroecology Description: Dr. Orval G. Caldwell (M.Sc./34) and Mrs. H. Ruth Gardner Caldwell have established a trust fund ($225,719) at the University of Manitoba to support graduate student research into sustainable agriculture and agroecology. The available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one fellowship to a student who: (1) is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in any Master of Science degree program delivered by a Department in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences; (2) has obtained a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours of study; (3) is pursuing a research program in the area of sustainable agriculture or agroecology. The award may be renewed for one year provided that the recipient: (1) continues to be registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, in any Master of Science degree program delivered by a Department in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences; (2) has maintained a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours of study; (3) has received a satisfactory progress report from the his/her graduate supervisor. Applicants will be required to submit an application which will consist of a one-page (maximum 500 words) description of their proposed or ongoing research and a letter of support from their Academic Advisor. Applications will be solicited in May, and the recipient will be announced by late June. The Fellowship will be tenable in the fall session following the announcement of the recipient. Only one recipient may hold the Fellowship at any one time. Recipients may hold the Orval G. Caldwell and H. Ruth Gardner Caldwell Fellowship in Sustainable Agriculture/Agroecology concurrently with any other awards, consistent with policies in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Candidates will be assessed as follows: record of academic achievement (50%), research statement (30%), letter of support (20%). The selection committee will be named by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (or designate). Est. [Plants-grads] Graduate student seminars in January

All, You will likely hear a knock at your door in the next week as Mayowa goes door-to-door in an effort to identify 4 students to offer seminars in January. We are looking for 2 seminars on January 11 and 2 on January 25. The seminars will be shorter in duration (15-20 minutes), similar to presentations at conferences. So we will have 2 seminars in our usual seminar time slot (Wednesday, 12:30-1:30). So far, Justice Zhanda will be presenting on January 25 in preparation for a corn workshop in which he is a presenter in February. The January seminars will also be an opportunity for graduate students to prepare for presentations at MSSS.
