University of Manitoba Bursaries Every year, the University of Manitoba offers a wide-range of bursaries to both new and continuing full time and part-time students who are enrolled in school from September to April who have a demonstrated financial need and a minimum academic standing. Bursaries (student funding that does not need to be repaid) range in amounts from $100 to $1,000 with over $6 million awarded annually. Bursary awards are primarily based upon financial need (as opposed to scholarships which are primarily based upon academics/marks). You may well ask, what is Lammastide? Lammastide is a festival from northern England and Scotland that celebrates the first fruits of the harvest. It falls roughly half way between the feasts that surround the planting of the crops and the harvest festival in the Fall. It can occur any time in August and we have chosen Thursday August 22 to celebrate the Festival. [for the Tolkien geeks, he gets the word for the travelling bread of the Elves, lembas bread, from this festival]. At St John’s College we want to celebrate the end of the summer as the students return to campus for their fall studies. We will have a brief service in the Chapel to bless the first fruits and breads at 11:30, then a bar-b-q and fair on the Daily Bread Patio. The fair will include troubadours, crafts tables and games. We thought this would be a good opportunity to show off the “first fruits” of some of the work of graduate students, especially those working in Agriculture. We were hoping some of your students may be interested in a poster display and/or demonstrations. I realize that some of the students may not be back yet from their summer activities, but if there are any around we would love them to participate. Second Call for Applications for the 2019-2020 UMGF Competition M.Sc. and Ph.D. Students Prospective and current M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply for the 2019-2020 Department of Soil Science University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship Competition (UMGF). Applications submitted for the March 2019 competition will be reconsidered. It is not necessary to resubmit these applications unless there have been substantive changes since March. The award value is $14,000 per year for a maximum of 2 years for M.Sc. students; and $18,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years for Ph.D. students. Master's fellowships will not extend beyond the first 24 months of the Master's program. Ph.D. fellowships will not extend beyond the first 48 months of their Ph.D. program. New students must start their award by January 2020 at the latest. Although students must have a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 to be eligible, admission and in-program GPAs constitute a substantial component of the award assessment. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply.
