In agriculture, externalities arising from production, such as air and water pollution, or positive Ecological Goods and Services (EG&S), such as biodiversity, are not priced through the marketplace and hence are either overproduced (externalities) or underproduced (EG&S), since farmers' production decisions will not account for these external costs or benefits. This provides a rationale for government intervention by introducing either regulations and penalties (the stick approach), or subsidies and incentives (the carrot). Increasingly, agri-environmental policies in Canada are addressing externalities by encouraging better management practices that reduce environmental impacts or reward EG&S. The industrialization of agriculture has resulted in greater profitability, but not necessarily more sustainable farming. How can this be rectified? This month’s One Great Graph is a suggestion of exactly how to measure Canada’s agri-food sustainability. La lecture vedette de ce mois-ci décrit l'impact de la mise en œuvre de pratiques vertes dans 34 exploitations agricoles suédoises. « Une approche Green Lean de la concurrence mondiale et du changement climatique dans le secteur agricole – Une étude de cas suédoise » (Barth et Melin, 2018) sert de modèle à tout secteur agroalimentaire développé souhaitant équilibrer la productivité et les résultats environnementaux, tout en étant réaliste quant aux contraintes telles que le temps, la main-d'œuvre, et la technologie. La méthodologie « Green Lean » (la gestion « maigre ») utilise des outils de traitement allégé (tels que les rapports d'audit) pour obtenir des résultats écologiques tels que la réduction des émissions. Bon nombre de ces 34 exploitations ont connu de réels changements: réduction du temps de transport, augmentation de l'efficacité des aliments pour animaux, réduction des heures de travail, et amélioration du moral des équipes. Si le Canada envisage d'investir dans son secteur agroalimentaire, cette étude de cas est un témoignage honnête qui éclaire ce qui fonctionne et ce qui ne fonctionne pas en termes de résultats commerciaux et environnementaux.
