The climate crisis and sustainability issues touch on virtually every discipline and the next generation of experts must reinforce the networks between specialists operating in the spheres of environment, economy and society. In this context, we are pleased to invite you to the 3rd annual CIREQ Interdisciplinary PhD Student Symposium on Climate Change. The symposium will take place on June 1st - 2nd, 2023, in hybrid format: online via Zoom and in person at 4th Space - Concordia University in Montréal. The event will showcase PhD students’ presentations embedded in thematic discussions along with a scientific communication workshop and panel discussions with scholars and workplace experts. The attendance is free and open to everyone. We invite doctoral students from all disciplines to submit their 300-word abstracts, through the online submission form on the symposium web page<https://cireqmontreal.com/?p=42673>. There is no submission or registration fee for the symposium. The submission deadline is April 17th, 2023 at 23:59. Early submissions will be given priority for in-person attendance. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 1st. The symposium is designed to promote open discussion. Although Canada is blessed with an abundance of food, there are households in Canada which experience food insecurity. When stratified by home ownership, food insecurity is the highest for those who rent their home (29%) and drops to less than half of that (12%) for homeowners who have a mortgage. Therefore, What We are Reading highlights a USDA report entitled “International Food Security Assessment, 2022-2032”<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001KvgCq8o4t-5qn6n3VT3L_rS2Jcy3_Hyku9JfDbnqwf8…> which projects food insecurity for 77 countries to 2032. The authors measure the rate of food insecurity as the share of the population who consumes less than 2100 calories per day. Despite positive global income growth, the number of food insecure people in the 77 at-risk countries rose from 2021 to 2022 to 1.3 billion, an increase of 10% in a single year. Higher prices for fertilizer and energy have the effect of reducing yields and income to worsen food insecurity for low-income, import-dependent countries in particular. The authors estimated that these developments may have led to an additional 42 to 135 million food-insecure people in 2022. While the report projects that food insecurity will decline over the next 10 years (to 577 million people – approximately half of today’s number), this is no guarantee, given the uncertainty, volatility, and risk associated with trade and geopolitical developments. One may think accessing a therapist, psychologist, or support group is as simple as walking through a door. However, access for Black Canadians serves to be challenging because our African-descent ethnic-cultures span across different modalities and intersections, which does not require a "one shoe fits all" approach. Addressing mental health concerns requires an intentional understanding that many prescriptions for healing Black Canadians are entrenched in white ideology that remains anti-Black, causing misdiagnosis to solve the many issues among Black people. The Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP) and the University of Manitoba Black Alliance (UMBA) will be hosting an event in the month of February focused on bringing awareness to addressing mental health concerns in our Black community. On February 22nd, 2023, we encourage audience members, both at home and in person, to appreciate knowledge from our featured guest speakers and experience an open and thought-provoking group discussion in an effort to educate and empower people. The event focuses on providing Black community members and the broader community with the opportunity to talk about mental health issues openly and safely with mental health professionals. By creating a safe space for Black people of different and respected lived experiences. We also encourage people from different ethnic backgrounds to connect with experts in the field, we strive to empower people by granting them access to tools and resources that allow them to seek help but know how to access help. Additionally, we work towards raising awareness about the wide spectrum of mental health issues that affect the Black community and reducing the stigmas associated with mental illness. This can include promoting positive behaviours that encourage people to seek help and inspire others to consider their emotional well-being.
