Ayu Saraswati (Professor of Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; University of Hawai'i) Tuesday, October 3rd 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM 409 Tier Boardroom Dr. L. Ayu Saraswati will use a transnational feminist autoethnography method of travelling to twenty countries in one year to offer thought-provoking theories and life-transforming ways to deal with pain outside of the neoliberal framework. This lecture invites us to reframe pain as a political and transnational feminist object and asks how we can carry it in a more humane, life-sustaining, enchanting, and feminist way. Feeding the World: Competing Visions of Agriculture and Community in a Hog Factory Farm Fight Dr. Nan Enstad (Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology; University of Wisconsin) Hosted by the Food Matters Research Cluster Thursday, October 5th 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM 307 Tier Boardroom Dr. Enstad will explore the dynamic struggle over concepts of nature and economic futures beyond left/right conflict. She uses a fight over a proposed hog factory farm in Polk and Burnett Counties, Wisconsin, to analyze the competing world-making discourses and community-making food practices around the concept of feeding the world. Dr. Saraswati is an award-winning teacher, speaker, consultant, and professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Hawai'i. Dr. Saraswati will also facilitate a hands-on writing workshop on October 4th (10:00 am - 12:00 pm), on transnational feminist autoethnography. We look forward to sharing a poster and more details for this anticipated event soon. Programming from the UMIH Research Clusters includes visiting lectures by Dr. Teresa Velasquez (California State University, San Bernardino) and Dr. Nancy Enstad (University of Wisconsin, Madison). Upcoming Events: UMIH Graduate Fellowship Lecture “Uncomfortable Elegance: Aesthetics and Representation of Oil Extraction, Production, Consumption, and Disposal in Edward Burtynsky’s Oil Series Photographs” Amal Majumder (ETFM) Thursday, April 13th at 2:30 - 4:00 PM 409 Tier In this talk, Amal will explore and examine the “guilty pleasure” that Edward Burtynsky’s Oil Series photographs incite through the presentation of the sheer scale of the oil extraction, production practices, and process, as well as, its ubiquitousness in our modern way of life underscored by consumerist ambition and appetite for comfort. To complement the reading of Burtynsky’s photographs, Amal will use the Jennifer Baichwal-directed documentary Manufactured Landscape with the hope of getting further insights into the relationality dynamics of modern life and oil. Dear friends of the hUManities, Welcome to a new week. Thank you to everyone who came out for Rosaria Moretti's lecture. It was a pleasure hosting many folks and sharing Rosaria's research work. We welcome folks to join us today at 2:30 PM in 409 Tier for the book club meeting in anticipation of Eternity Martis's talk. We look forward to seeing you. The Food Matters Research Cluster Presents: Poetry, Philosophy and Potatoes by Rebecca Earle March 9th, 2023 at 2:30 PM CT. In-person at 307 Tier Building Hosted by Jennifer Dueck (History), this lecture is especially open to students. Rebecca Earle's research work focuses on the cultural history of Spanish America and early modern Europe. She is interested in how ordinary, everyday activities such as eating or dressing shape how we think about the world and how others view us. Her early work was rooted in a very specific part of the world (southern Colombia). Recently, she studies the movement of ideas and practices across larger geographies. Her first book Spain and the Independence of Colombia tried to explain the collapse of Spanish colonialism in early nineteenth-century Colombia. Subsequent work took on ampler periods and broader geographies. We are thrilled to extend this seminar to folks and hope to see you there. The poster coming soon. Please address queries to : joo(a)cc.umanitoba.ca<mailto:joo@cc.umanitoba.ca> Upcoming events: The Food Matters Research Cluster Presents: Cultivating Identity: Italian-Canadian Subsistence Gardens in Toronto, 1960-2000 by Rosaria Moretti, (York University) Friday, March 3rd from 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM In person at 409 Tier Buidling Rosaria Moretti, York University Subsistence gardening has become popular in many urban and suburban homes. While gardening supplies, exotic seeds, and plants flood today’s markets, such luxuries were unheard of half a century ago. For many Italian Canadian immigrants in Toronto in the 1960s, gardening was a way to connect to their new habitat via the memories of the land they had left behind. The garden served as an inexpensive way to acquire fresh produce that was preserved and enjoyed throughout many harsh and lean Canadian winters. Italian Canadian gardeners found innovative and frugal ways to create gardens which became an extension of the kitchen and served as an additional gathering space. Through oral interviews with subsistence gardeners and photographs by Vincenzo Pietropaolo, this talk will show the many ways Italian Canadians were cultivating identity in their gardens. Many Victorias were sculpted into marble and bronze, and streets such as Queen’s Way and Queen’s Gate were named in her honor. As the war between the British and Boers continued in South Africa and the swadeshi campaigns took hold in eastern India to boycott British goods, private donors, colonial and military officials collected funds to install the Queen’s likeness, arguing that a memorial to her legacy was especially critical when there were revolts against the British empire.
