Thanks Nicole for your quick response, careful read and suggested edits.
I believe we can all accept improvements in grammar and clarity, and updating (as I have mentioned revision vis-à-vis Council of Europe action and now uniting for peace resolution). Beyond these, I don’t believe we have time to debate some formulations. E.g. the third paragraph is explicitly about Russia in the SC … and while one might deduce implications for other permanent members, that is not now the subject being addressed.
I also believe it is both logically coherent and in fact the legal obligation of UN Member States always to seek peaceful resolution of disputes including in moments of self-defense as Article 33 and, more so, Article 51 explicitly make clear; the Charter does not oblige States to non-violence in self-defense, but it also does not relieve them of the underlying and ongoing duty. In this respect, it strikes me that Ukraine is being entirely consistent including applying at the ICJ for injunctive relief (an Order for Provisional Measures)… exactly a pacific recourse foreseen in Article 33. We can and should commend Ukraine for persistently (and creatively) remaining on this path.
Of course, these are good topics for later debate (if we are fortunate enough to be afforded that luxury).
I believe we need to issue the statement today (this evening latest) for relevance/currency. I hope others will respond ASAP (FYI, we are about halfway there in terms of membership).
Best wishes to all,
John

We/HRREC-uOttawa believe that the moral and legal basis for our international work is threatened by the actions of Putin/Russia and we cannot sensibly sit silently watching.
I note other important institutions have issued statements.
I believe CAHRI should, too.
I understand some CAHRI Members have policies against issuing any statements or endorsing any. That can be respected by indicating (by an asterisk) those members that wish to include their names; it is also possible to indicate an individual’s name and affiliation (as in X, Professor and Director of Y). It would, of course, be preferable simply to issue the statement for the group as a whole.
Given the speed of developments, it would be preferable to issue the statement by close of business on Monday, 28 February (5pm ET). We could then post it on our websites and also share it with media or others as we deem appropriate.
Thank you for your consideration and response.
I am available for any clarification.

Importance: High
Thanks Shayna et al. who have so far responded positively.
Grateful if other CAHRI Members would ASAP respond.
Note that many other institutions and organisations have already issued statements, e.g.: AHRI, ESIL, ASIL etc.
As Canada is home to the largest population of Ukrainians outside Ukraine and Russia (and also irrespective of this fact), it is important that we – CAHRI – not now be silent in the face of these violations of core tenets of the rules-based international order of which “human rights” is a pillar.
Grateful for others to respond today!
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
John
PS Please see attached text with slight edit (update re CoE which has now suspended Russia).

Dear all CAHRI Members,
In this extraordinary moment – when the global rules-based international order is shaken to its core, human rights utterly disregarded, and nuclear war threatened by a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, I take the liberty to address you hoping for solidarity in issuing the attached joint statement.
Sincerely,
John

Thanks Kyle for the quick and positive response.
There isn’t much we can individually do in the circumstances – commensurate with the magnitude of what is happening. But we can speak out – and together is better than alone!
Thanks!
John

Subject: Invitation: Virtual International Academic Forum 1 and 2 March 2022
Good day,
We are pleased to invite you to a Virtual International Academic Forum on implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, in support of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Discussions will focus on Indigenous Peoples and Right to Self-Determination. This forum builds on the success of the Kiskinohmatowin, the International Academic Forum, hosted by the University of Manitoba in January 2019.
The primary goal of this forum is to encourage student awareness of and engagement with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We kindly ask that you circulate with your network this invitation and poster outlining an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with international experts, including current and former members of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
This forum will occur on Tuesday, 1 March, and Wednesday, 2 March, 2022 from 9 pm to 12 pm CET/ 3 pm to 6 pm EST/ 2 pm to 5 pm CST/ 12 pm to 3 pm PST. The zoom platform will open an hour before the forum begins.
Respectfully,

Hello,
My name is Zlikha Al Lilo. I am a human rights major. My work is organizing an event in colabration with human rights museum to discuss an article written by Cindy Blackstock, Leilani Farha, Monia Mazigh, Alex Neve and Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair.
The authors will be the speakers at this event and is a discussion about Democracy, Human Rights and Rule of Law in light of the recent freedom protest.
I would really appreciate it if it can be sent out to human rights students as I believe this is very important discussion.
Kind Regards,
Zlikha Al Lilo
