Virtual ASN is hosting an upcoming webinar, Geopolitics and the War in Ukraine. The panel will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 23rd from 1:00-2:30 PM ET (Eastern Time) / 6:00-7:30 PM EET (Central European Time) //
7:00-8:30 PM EET (Ukrainian--Eastern European Time).
In just a few weeks, Russia's further invasion of Ukraine has transformed the geopolitical landscape in Europe and beyond. While the West and its global allies rallied to denounce Russian aggression, other parts of the world (notably China and India) seem to be blaming the US. What are the appropriate historical analogies to make sense of these developments? Are we headed for a new Cold War between democracy and autocracy? What does the war imply for the future of global economic integration, already battered by the Covid-19 epidemic? This roundtable brings together respected scholars to address these large questions.
Participants:
James Goldgeier (American U, US)
Olexiy Haran (University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine)
Gwendolyn Sasse (Humboldt U, Germany)
Peter Rutland (Wesleyan U, US)
David Shullman (Atlantic Council, US)

The Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) is pleased to invite you to this presentation with Julia Hernandez, Associate Professor of Law at the CUNY School of Law and holder of the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice at the HRREC this Winter 2022:
Movement Lawyering in the Caring Society Case
Professor Julia Hernandez will present preliminary research findings on the impact of movement lawyering in Caring Society v. Canada and what U.S.-based movements challenging the family regulation system might learn from it. In both the U.S. and Canada, broad critiques of the disparate involvement of indigenous families and other families of color have percolated to the forefront of national conversations around social and racial justice. The Caring Society case resulted in a landmark ruling that Canada discriminated against First Nations children and their families by under-funding children’s services.

* The Challenge of China: Protecting Human Rights and Democracy in the Global Institutions of the 21st Century<https://cdp-hrc.uottawa.ca/en/june-2-3-2022-challenge-china> – The People’s Republic of China (PRC), without a doubt, poses the most pressing human rights challenges since the creation of the United Nations and global institutions that were built to end war and protect human rights for all. What can the international community, specifically Canada, do to encourage China to conform to international human rights standards? How can we learn from Taiwan about how to deal with the human rights challenges posed by the PRC beyond its borders? Legal experts and social scientists from Taiwan, France, the US, Canada, and uOttawa will discuss what is at stake for Canada and its partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
