Dear all,
Thank you to those who joined the call online or in person yesterday. As a follow up and thanks to the help of Shayna Plaut, I am sharing some notes from the discussion for your review.
Participants:
1. Welcome and short introductions: Mona Pare – Interdisciplinary Laboratory of the Rights of the Child – Uottawa, Shannonbrooke Murphy – Atlantic HR Centre (St. Thomas), Mirja Trilsch – UQAM HR Clinic, Sharon Webb – Centre for HR at McGill, Anne Purkey – St Paul College of Social Justice (Univ of Waterloo), Nicole Barrett – International Justice and Human Rights Clinic – UBC, Melinke Yimaz – Centre for Human Rights at McMaster, Virginia Caputo – Landon Pearson Centre for childhood and Children’s Rights, Carleton, Shayna Plaut – Centre for Human Rights Research, University of Manitoba, Viviana Fernandez and John Packer – Human Rights Research and Education Centre, U Ottawa.
1. Shared CAHRI initiatives:
· Human Rights Research Network<https://chrr.info/human-rights-research-network/> from the Centre for Human Rights Research at the University of Manitoba. Open to publicizing in-person events taking place in Winnipeg or surrounding areas, online events being organized/sponsored/supported by CAHRI or AHRI members. Can put on calendar, social media, listserve. Email chrrman(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:chrrman@umanitoba.ca>
· Students Essay Competition<https://droitcivil.uottawa.ca/interdisciplinary-research-laboratory-rights-…> regarding children’s rights organized by Interdisciplinary Laboratory on the Rights of the Child. Annual<https://droitcivil.uottawa.ca/interdisciplinary-research-laboratory-rights-…> at uOttowa. Annual deadline May 15th. Essay must be submitted to a course and with the approval of the professor can be submitted for consideration for the contest. Winning essay is published in the Canadian Journal for Children’s Rights.
1. Canadian Yearbook of Human Rights.
* Two issues published to date (2015 and (2016-2018) since John Packer resuscitated the yearbook in 2014. Solely online now. Next issue (2019-2021) should be published soon.
* Offer a Canadian look at human rights - focus is human Rights in Canada and human rights AND Canada.
* Audience is both academic and practitioners (law, NGO) and can perhaps be used as a reference for journalists and others if the format changed (more applied and synoptic). Perhaps renamed? “Snapshot of Human Rights in Canada Year XXXX”. The format of the yearbook could be
· Year in review (“Developments in human rights in Canada” - world events, Canadian events, legislation, juridical, opportunities)
· Thematic focus (this year it is COVID 19 – next time it could be the 40th Anniversary of Human Rights? Or perhaps “What can be learned from Canada’s response to the war in Ukraine?”)
· People behind the scenes (Canadians in Human Rights i.e.: there is a housing human rights advocate – what is that?)
* Currently the budget is $10-$15K (layout and production takes the bulk, some money for RAs and a small honorarium for a managing editor. The main obstacle is the lack of having a specific point person (managing editor) that can dedicate their time/focus in executing the yearbook (i.e.: tracking down authors/pieces, ensuring drafts become finalized, submit for layout, etc.)
* Ideas: turn the Gordon Henderson Post Doc Fellowship in Human Rights (uOttawa) into a TWO year post doc and have the “yearbook” be under their job description (i.e.: they would be the managing editor, have a say in the foci, write a piece that can be published in it and then organize an outreach event for it and by going through the process 2x they can help train the next person). Have the Research Assistants come from different members of CAHRI to ensure that this is a CAHRI publication (mutual ownership/accountability/pride) not solely UOttawa.
* Next steps: John to form the editorial board (ideally one representative per CAHRI member), board to choose 2 assistant editors, determine possible foci based on John’s proposals and discussions, uOttawa/HRREC to evaluate the option of using the postdoc as proposed.
Please feel free to add if we forgot something important. Enjoy the summer!

Subject: CAHRI annual meeting, CYHR and "Our Charter - Our Rights" gathering 16-17 June uOttawa - three questions
Caution: This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba.
Dear CAHRI member representatives/supporters,
Happy May Day - at last! (I shouldn't jinx things, but it's finally a beautiful spring day at least in Ottawa... despite snowing again LAST WEEK!)
I hope you are well and have survived (or are near to completing tasks arising from) the academic year - a second COVID-affected one with many challenges.
I am addressing you with regard to a few matters as follows:
First, we should have an Annual Meeting to catch-up, exchange views and perhaps decide one or two things. I am taking the liberty of suggesting we meet on Thursday 16 June. We/HRREC would happily arrange and host the meeting.
Second, one important subject is to make progress with the Canadian Yearbook of Human Rights (CYHR). For various reasons, it has been a struggle to get it done during the pandemic... but I am pleased to say the third issue is very near to publication (and includes a Special Section on COVID, guest edited by Alex Neve, and another Special Section profiling a handful of Canadian human rights advocates... of whom too little is known or as examples of careers). The immediate need now is to take steps for the next issue (2022-2023). We/HRREC are prepared to offer a modest honorarium for a Managing Editor and we will continue to cover production costs. The previously expressed hope is that CAHRI member entities would each nominate someone for the Editorial Board and that CAHRI would take up the publication as a more fully cooperative endeavour. We are aware that, previously, a few of you did respond positively and even identified a representative for an intended CYHR Editorial Board, but most did not respond. The time seems good to complete this task and move the initiative forward if there is sufficient interest.
Third, on 16-17 June we/HRREC are hosting at uOttawa Faculty of Law a youth-oriented gathering around the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, There will be parallel sessions on Thursday 16 June and a larger plenary and public day on Friday 17 June. There are some associated initiatives - including political cartoon and photo-journalism competitions with which we're working with various partners and intend an online and physical exhibition. For the parallel meetings on 16 June, we will have one group of Law students and Human Rights students from across Canada, while students of journalism will be meeting in parallel as well as a group of our own "alumni". Friday, 17 June, will include representatives of government, implementing institutions, some who contributed to elaboration of the Charter 40 years ago, and a panel looking ahead at gaps and contemporary pressing issues. As we are hosting this gathering, we would be pleased to include a representative from each CAHRI member for whom we would cover the costs in Ottawa; there is no fee, so it is only transportation costs which we are not covering. If enough CAHRI members would be represented, then we could hold CAHRI's Annual Meeting bi-modally (some in-person and others joining online).
Do please let us know the following:
1. Does your centre/institute/programme support holding the CAHRI Annual Meeting on Thursday, 16 June?
2. Does your centre/institute/programme wish to name a representative to the CYHR Editorial Board and, if so, whom?
3. Does your centre/institute/programme wish to send someone to attend our gathering in Ottawa on 16-17 June "Our Charter - Our Rights"? [If so, we will provide all relevant follow-up information.]
Thanks for your attention, consideration and response.
Best wishes,
John
