As the summer months are here and the Centre for Human Rights Research has some important updates to share with you – all of which can be found on our website<https://chrr.info/>
1) The CHRR will be focusing on a new theme exploring the intersections of human rights and borders. “Questioning Borders?”<https://chrr.info/chrr-themes/borders/> by lead author Sara Gibson, an MHR student and CHRR research assistant, unpacks a critical understanding of borders beyond the nation state. We hope this theme will help guide us in future work including Critical Conversations, guest lectures and research opportunities and collaborations. Please note an extensive list of references and resources that can be downloaded found at the bottom of the page.
2) Carlie Kane, a student at Robson Hall and the Indigenous Summer Intern with the CHRR, has compiled an extensive timeline for Aboriginal Law. This resource<https://chrr.info/other-resources/aboriginal-law-resources/>, starting pre-contact and reaching up to the present includes detailed legal and historical information and also includes a rich list of resources and references
3) On July 13, 2022 the Centre for Human Rights Research at the University of Manitoba hosted an informative, webinar roundtable discussion “Fighting for Reproductive Rights in 2022.” This discussion brought together a variety of scholars and advocates – and those who identify as both – including Karen Sharma, Nahanni Fontaine, Kemlin Nembhard, Dr. Sarah Elvins, and Dr. Lindsay Larios. The video of the roundtable<https://chrr.info/past-events/> as well as an indepth list of resources on reproductive health, justice and advocacy<https://chrr.info/other-resources/reproductive-rights-resources/> compiled by Cassie Dong, a CHRR research assistant and incoming PhD student in Peace and Conflict Studies, is posted under “past events” on our website
We invite you all to explore and share these resources on our website and to offer any feedback for how you may use them as well as suggestions for how to make it more comprehensive and useful.
Looking forward!

The overturning of Roe V Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States is shocking and will have long term consequences. It also seems to be just the beginning of a movement to once again legitimate control – through law -- over the lives and bodies of women and girls, especially those without the means to travel.
Of course, this is not new. According to international law, reproductive rights means the right to choose the number and spacing of your children. Forced and coerced sterilization of Indigenous women, lack of access to abortions (medical and surgical) outside of urban areas and ongoing systemic racism in the health care system and institutions shows that Canada is no utopia for reproductive rights. We are also well aware that other rights, especially those of the LGBTQ+ community, are coming under the crosshairs. Although the decision took place in US courts, we all know that the ripple effects will be felt across borders, including for those of located north of the 49th parallel.

After a year full of events and initiatives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC), we are sending you this last newsletter of 2021-2022 and taking a well-deserved summer break!
We will be back in the fall of 2022. Have a great summer!
Jabeur Fathally Appointed Director of the HRREC for One Year
Professor Jabeur Fathally, who teaches in the Civil Law Section, has been appointed as Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Center (HRREC) beginning July 1, 2022. Professor Fathally is replacing Professor John Packer, who will be on academic leave for one year. As a member of the HRREC for many years, Professor Fathally is a natural choice to lead the Center in Professor John Packer's absence. According to Viviana Fernandez, Associate Director of HRREC, "The team is very excited to work with Jabeur during the 2022-2023 academic year, following our 40th anniversary celebrations that took place between September 2021 and June 2022. We continue to engage with our members and partners to provide innovative programs and activities that showcase the research projects we are working on. Congratulations to Jabeur Fathally!"
