Master of Human Rights degree is first-of-its-kind in Canada

The first Master of Human Rights graduate degree program to be offered in Canada will be housed at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law. [University of Manitoba News Release]<http://news.umanitoba.ca/mailster/83620/00000000000000000000000000000000/aH…> [Media Release] Master of Human Rights: first-of-its-kind DEGREE in Canada November 5, 2018 The Faculty of Law of the University of Manitoba is pleased to announce the first Master of Human Rights (MHR) graduate degree program to be offered in Canada. This interdisciplinary professional program will train students both practically and academically for careers in human rights work, in collaboration with the faculties of Arts, Education, and Social Work and the Centre for Human Rights Research, the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice in St. Paul’s College, and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Dr. Jonathan Black-Branch, Dean of Law says, “The fragility of human rights protection requires trained professionals to monitor and enforce such protections, without which individuals are vulnerable. This new master’s degree represents a monumental development for the faculty in bringing together a wide range of disciplines under this exciting professional degree. Indeed, it is a significant opportunity for the university, the Province of Manitoba and for Canada as a whole.” Dr. David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba states, “Protecting human rights and ensuring social justice requires vigilance; it requires careful study, critical thinking, open minds, and bold ideas. We can provide that here at the University of Manitoba.” According to the Director of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Adam Muller, who helped design the new program, students wanting well-rounded training in human rights law, theory and human-rights-specific quantitative and qualitative research methods have often needed to go to the U.S. or Europe. This kind of training is typically expected for positions with organizations like the Red Cross and the United Nations, Muller explains. “As a result, Canada was losing a chance to educate generations of students in a domestic context marked by distinct (and emulated) legal traditions, memory cultures, and mechanisms of historical redress.” “For all kinds of reasons, it makes sense to house the program in Law,” says Muller, pointing to scholars in the Faculty of Law already pursuing work in human rights. He noted that the Dean of Law worked in the United Kingdom prior to assuming his position at the U of M in 2016, so he is “very familiar with the kind of program we have proposed, and with the kind of students it will attract.” “We believe that this arrangement will be win-win for all of the parties concerned,” Muller says. “For the University of Manitoba to offer this kind of program,” Black-Branch says, “demonstrates academic leadership in having such a degree that will focus on professional development and promote the importance of protecting human rights globally.” The MHR program will soon begin accepting applications for its first intake of students in the fall of 2019. Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree in human rights or a related discipline, including but not limited to, history, political science, law or philosophy. A background in human rights law, business, or Indigenous rights would be considered an asset. Candidates should also have a strong research record, and a demonstrated commitment to excellent and innovative undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will have expertise to teach undergraduate human rights courses related to both Canadian and international contexts. Applied work experience in human rights is an asset, as is cross-cultural or international work or teaching experience. Human Rights is an interdisciplinary B.A. program housed in The University of Winnipeg Global College. The program places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as creating opportunities for students to gain experience outside the classroom through field courses, practicum placements, community engagement initiatives and doing research with faculty members. In Canada, Women in International Security Canada (WIIS-Canada) and its partners - Atlantic Human Rights Centre (St. Thomas University), Canada Federation of University Women, Canadian Labour Congress, DisAbled Women's Network Canada, Grandmothers Advocacy Network, Immigration Women Services Ottawa, Native Women Association of Canada, New Brunswick Multicultural Council, Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women, Women’s Shelters Canada and Zonta Club of Ottawa - are leading the effort to create a national campaign and wish to invite your organization to participate by hosting an event or spearheading an advocacy initiative. Open Letter to PM Trudeau on Rohingya Genocide

As the latest reports demonstrate inescapable pre-planning for the attacks on the Rohingyas last year (and still ongoing almost a year later!), it seems clear that a more focused and determined response from the IC, including Govt of Canada, is needed. The authors of the letter (myself amongst them) are seeking a wide range and array of organisations and individuals to sign-on - hopefully with strong HR participation and cross-Canada geographic representation. Responses to sign-on should be addressed to Mr Fareed Khan at the email address indicated below. We hope to get this submitted in early August, hold a Press Conference and rally support for cross-Canada demonstrations on 25 August - the one-year anniversary of the last year's spate of egregious attacks. Dear all, Thank you to those who were able to join us this afternoon. Here is a short summary of the main points we discussed and next steps: - Canadian Human Rights Yearbook<https://cdp-hrc.uottawa.ca/en/publications/canadian_yearbook_human_rights>: This publication was relaunched by HRREC at uOttawa a couple of years ago and John Packer proposed it as a possible publication vehicle for our group. He will send more details about an invitation to appoint a member of each of our institutions to the editorial board of the journal and ways in which we can collaborate going forward. - CAHRI web page<https://cdp-hrc.uottawa.ca/en/publications/canadian_yearbook_human_rights>: the group agreed to add information about special programs/courses/summer schools organized by our institutions. In order to do so, please send the name of the activity with a link to Christina Szurlej cszurlej(a)stu.ca<mailto:cszurlej@stu.ca> who hosts the page. In order to raise awareness about CAHRI, we commit to post information about the group and the page a few times a year on our own social media platforms. - Listserv and sharing information: the group agreed to share information about upcoming events and special programs, job opportunities/internships/scholarships/etc. through the listserv to facilitate the promotion in our own communities. Invitations to sign petitions or letters can be shared on the listserv but institutions will decide according to their own policies. Members are asked to share only a limited number of such petitions every year. The goal of this course is to explore issues around the Art as a manifestation of human rights and as an instrument for the promotion of human rights. The theme will be Indigenous Arts and Culture and the course will be offered only in English. Enrolment is limited to 40 participants. The Connection between the Arts and Human Rights In recognition of the Arts as an integral medium of learning and expression, the HRREC launched the Arts and Human Rights Program. Hi fellow members of the Association for Canadian Human Rights Institutes/Association canadienne des instituts des droits de la personne, At our founding meeting at the Realizing Rights conference in Ottawa in June, participants expressed interest in learning a bit about each other's organizations without having to wade through a long annual report. Below is a nutshell description of our research centre. We would be interested in reading similar summaries of your organizations. Centre for Human Rights Research, University of Manitoba Founding director: Law Prof. Karen Busby Established: 2012 Mandate: The Centre for Human Rights Research brings together people and organizations - both within and outside the University of Manitoba - to enhance interdisciplinary and collaborative research capacity, create richer training opportunities for students, and facilitate the fusion of research-driven knowledge, public policy and intellectual debate on issues related to human rights and social justice. The centre aims to facilitate research that is both academically rigorous and accessible to the public. Current research themes: sexual and reproductive rights, drinking water and sanitation as a human right, documenting human rights, rights of adolescents. Governance: the director reports to the VP Research. The deans of Arts, Law, Social Work and Education appoint professors to the advisory board. Annual budget: about $187,00 core funding from VP Research + research grants (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, Health Canada, international, etc.) Staff: full-time manager and half-time office assistant. Director receives one course release per year. Main annual events: 1) Research workshop bringing together 20 experts, often from across Canada or beyond, on an emerging human rights issue. This generates special journal issues, co-authored books and new collaborative research projects. 2) Semester-long seminar series on an emerging human rights topic that is available to law and graduate students for credit but also open to the general public for free and podcast/summarized online. Publications: director co-edits a Human Rights and Social Justice book series for the University of Manitoba Press. Other ongoing activities: law student speakers bureau for high school classes, media training for professors. Public profile: director and other CHRR-supported researchers were quoted in or wrote more than 50 print and broadcast news stories about human rights issues last year. Degree programs: director will be a non-voting member on the program committee of a new interdisciplinary Master of Human Rights program expected to launch at the University of Manitoba in 2020.
