Ce cours a pour objectif d'explorer liens entre les arts et les droits humains, ainsi que leur rôle dans la promotion de ces droits et de la justice sociale. Les étudiants découvriront des outils et des cadres permettant d'identifier les moyens de renforcer les initiatives en faveur des droits de la personne et de la justice sociale à travers les arts. Ils échangeront leurs points de vue sur les manifestations artistiques qui captent l'attention du public et celles qui, au contraire, peinent à communiquer des messages fondamentaux. The goal of this course is to explore issues around the arts as a manifestation of human rights and as an instrument for the promotion of human rights and social justice. Students will be exposed to tools and frameworks to identify ways in which human rights and social justice initiatives can be enhanced through the arts. They will exchange views about artistic manifestations that capture people's attention and others that fail to communicate basic messages. Cette série explore les développements en matière de droits de la personne au Canada et à l’échelle internationale dans un monde en rapide mutation. La situation des droits humains au Venezuela et le recours à la force par les États-Unis<https://www.uottawa.ca/recherche-innovation/credp/evenements/developpements…> Le 3 janvier 2026, les États-Unis ont lancé une attaque armée contre le Venezuela et ont enlevé le président Maduro ainsi que Cilia Flores, qui se trouvent maintenant dans un centre de détention à Brooklyn dans l’État de New York. Maduro a refusé de renoncer au pouvoir au Venezuela malgré des preuves évidente qu’il avait perdu l’élection présidentielle de 2024 et que la légitimité de son gouvernement n’a pas été largement reconnue par la communauté internationale. This series explores developments in human rights in Canada and internationally in today’s rapidly changing world. The human rights situation in Venezuela and the US use of force<https://www.uottawa.ca/research-innovation/hrrec/events/developments-human-…> On January 3, 2026, the United States engaged in an armed attack against Venezuela and abducted President Maduro and Cilia Flores who are now in a detention centre in Brooklyn NY. Maduro refused to relinquish power in Venezuela despite clear evidence that he lost the 2024 Presidential election and the legitimacy of his government has not been widely recognized by the international community. There have been many allegations of grave and widespread human rights violations under the Maduro regime and in 2019 the UN Human Rights Council established an Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela. This webinar will discuss the human rights situation in Venezuela prior to and after the US use of force as well as the legality of the use of force itself and of the abduction of Maduro and his wife. This issue recognizes the conferences, publications, and other activities undertaken by the Centre’s members and its affiliates over the past few months. Highlights include a “Teaching Café” on democracy and archives and a conference on “Democratizing Human Rights.” The involvement of students in both these events demonstrates their important work in advancing our understanding of human rights and restorative justice. The Winter 2026 newsletter also draws attention to a recent publication from the CHRRJ-McGill-Queens University Press book series, “Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice.” Titled Narrating Transitional Justice: Memory in the Age of Truth and Reconciliation and co-edited by Dr. Paul Ugor and Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, this essay collection emerged from the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice’s conference on “Narrating Transitional Justice: Hist ory, Memory, Poetics and Politics.” Finally, I’d like to welcome the Centre’s newest member, Dr. Jessica van Horssen. Her work on environmental health and contamination aligns with CHRRJ's research agenda, especially its social and environmental justice cluster. Her first monograph (A Town Called Asbestos: Environmental Health, Contamination, and Resilience in a Resource Community, UBC Press, 2016) explores the history of the community once known as Asbestos, Quebec, which housed the largest opencast chrysotile asbestos mine in the world for much of the 20th century. She is now a co-investigator on the "Mining Danger: Industrial Disease, Accidents, and Pollution in Canada's Mines and Mining Communities, 1870-1990," funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant. Welcome, Jessica! During the months ahead, the members and associates of the Centre will have many opportunities to build on these accomplishments by continuing to pursue their research and other activities and by developing new and exciting projects. Group Picture Credit: Colin Czerneda We are pleased to report on the successful two-day hybrid conference held on October 23–24, 2025, titled "Democratizing Human Rights: Towards an Inclusive & Participatory Human Rights Agenda." Hosted and organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice in collaboration with Participedia at McMaster University, the event brought together scholars, practitioners and activists from around the globe to engage with the pressing intersections of human rights, democracy and participation. The conference was organized and run by a dedicated team of students and research assistants, leading to a highly successful two days that fostered a collaborative intellectual environment. The Conference Research Assistants The highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, the Fourth President of the International Criminal Court and the Distinguished International Jurist at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at the Toronto Metropolitan University. His talk, titled “An Imperative of Accountability for Gross Human Rights Violations,” was followed by a lively Q&A session. Following the keynote, a panel discussion on Human Rights, Leadership and the Sustenance of Democratic Principles was held with Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh of McMaster University, Dr. Melissa Levin of the University of Toronto, and Dr. Lara Campbell of the Wilson College of Leadership. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz The event was a major success, demonstrating the power of collaborative, student-driven academic spaces and highlighting the essential role of emerging scholars in shaping a more inclusive and participatory human rights agenda for the years ahead. Participedia’s first-ever hybrid Teaching Café, “Democracy’s Archives, Archiving Democracy”, was jointly organized and hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice and the Department of History, bringing participants together for an engaging exploration of what archives are, what they hold, and how they shape our understanding of democratic life. Rather than viewing archives as static repositories, the Café emphasized them as dynamic, evolving spaces where community histories, struggles, and memories are preserved, contested, and reshaped. The main speakers were Melissa J. Nelson (Archivist, Educator, and Community Connector, Black Memory Collective), Krista McCracken (Public Historian and Curator, Algoma University), Michele Antoinette Johnson (Professor and Associate Dean, York University), Myron Groover (Archives and Rare Books Librarian, McMaster University), Denali YoungWolfe (PhD Candidate, University of British Columbia) and Roberto Falanga, José Ribeiro, and João Moniz (Inovações Democráticas em Portugal, Universidade de Lisboa, and INCITE-DEM). The Teaching Café reflected on where democracy resides, how it is remembered, and how archives can both safeguard and reshape its future. Following the talks, participants were divided into small groups, led by student facilitators, and presented with archival dilemmas to work through. These scenarios prompted lively debate about ethical choices, representation, access, ownership, and the responsibilities of archivists and communities. The activity allowed attendees to apply the Café's themes in a hands-on, collaborative way. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz On November 15, 2025, the CHRRJ’s research coordinator, Melike Yilmaz,  had the pleasure of attending “A World Without”, a play presented by McMaster’s School of the Arts, written and directed by Peter Cockett and created in collaboration with Donna-Michelle St. Bernard and Syrus Marcus Ware. The production explored urgent social justice issues, with a focus on transformative justice, prison reform, and the impacts of carceral systems on individuals and communities. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz The students in the iArts program delivered absolutely phenomenal performances, demonstrating remarkable creativity, depth, and commitment to the work. The play brought important conversations to the forefront and showcased the power of the arts in fostering social reflection and dialogue. The Centre is a co-sponsor of this meaningful production. On November 13th, 2025, the Orchestrating Listening Situations in Restorative Transitional Justice Initiatives (ORLI) held a hybrid knowledge exchange event entitled Enforced Disappearances in Colombia and Indigenous Missing Persons in Canada. ORLI is a SSHRC-funded project exploring how institutions, artists, and educators in Canada and Colombia may create spaces for victims, offenders, and communities to engage in restoratively-oriented ways of listening as they work towards justice. The CHRRJ is a partner in the ORLI project and Dr. Kristina R. Llewellyn, a member of the CHRRJ, is a co-investigator on the project. Picture Credit: ORLI Panellists and respondents included: * Kimberley Murray, former Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools (Canada) * Luz Marina Monzón, founding director of Colombia’s Unit for the Search of People Deemed Disappeared * Artist Constanza Ramirez, known for flashmobs highlighting enforced disappearance in Colombia * Mohawk writer Sara General, director of Indigenous Studies at United College * Dr. Luis C. Sotelo (Acts of Listening Lab - Concordia University and ORLI’s principal investigator) * The discussion was chaired by Dr. Nancy Tapias (Human Rights, United College) and a co-investigator in the ORLI project. Dr. Luis C. Sotelo, the Principal Investigator for ORLI, has offered a reflection on the event: Words shape how we understand violence and justice. In Canada, the disappearances and deaths of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people are often referred to as ‘missing.’ In Colombia, similar abuses—affecting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons—are referred to as “enforced disappearance.” Though the contexts differ, international human rights obligations are the same for both states. However, while Canada acknowledges “missing” Indigenous persons, they do not acknowledge cases of “enforced disappearances.” Meanwhile, Colombia, despite challenges, has implemented its obligations in both matters. This raises urgent questions: What are the differences and impacts of both concepts – “missing” and “enforced disappearances”? What role can art and education play in engaging the public with the suffering of families still searching for loved ones? How do terms like “missing” and “enforced disappearance” overlap, and how do they diverge in practice? These questions were at the heart of the first knowledge exchange event for the Orchestrating Listening Situations in Restorative Transitional Justice Initiatives. Bonny Ibhawoh 2025 Social Forum Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, chair of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (EMRTD), delivered a keynote presentation at the United Nations Social Forum, held on 30 - 31 October 2025 in the Assembly Hall of the Palais des Nations, Geneva. His presentation topic: "The contribution of education in realizing the right to development, economic and social justice, equality and non-discrimination." The Social Forum is an annual meeting convened by the UN Human Rights Council. It is a unique space for open, interactive dialogue among civil society, representatives of Member States, and intergovernmental organizations on a theme chosen by the Council each year. In accordance with Resolution 56/12 of the UN Human Rights Council, the 2025 Social Forum will focus on the contribution of education to the respect, promotion, protection, and fulfillment of all human rights for all. Dr. Ibhawoh expressed his appreciation to the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) for its support. COP 30 Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh joined COP30 in Belem, Brazil, from November 10 to 16, 2025. He presented major findings from a climate justice study developed with extensive support from the McMaster Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ). Researchers from the Centre were central to shaping the study’s recommendations, which highlight how climate impacts are unevenly distributed and call for policies that prioritize marginalized communities during the transition away from fossil fuels. Pictures Credit: UN Chandrima Chakraborty The Gandhi Peace Festival, in collaboration with McMaster University’s Centre for Global Peace, Justice and Health (CGPJH), the Global Peace and Social Justice Program, the India-Canada Society of Hamilton, and the City of Hamilton, hosted a Workshop on Nonviolence on November 1, 2025, titled “On Becoming a Voice for Change: Defending Democracy Collectively.” The workshop was led by Dr. Paul Dekar, Professor Emeritus at McMaster University and Memphis Theological Seminary. Participants discussed Gandhi’s key ideas on democracy, reflected on their personal experiences, and explored how these ideas could be applied to the current context, both in large and small group discussions. (https://gpjh.humanities.mcmaster.ca) https://gpjh.humanities.mcmaster.ca Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz Ingrid Waldron On June 26, 2025, Dr. Ingrid Waldron (Professor and HOPE Chair in Peace and Health, Global Peace and Social Justice Program, Faculty of Humanities) held the event  “Mental Health in Hamilton’s Black Community: A Symposium at  McMaster’s Center for Continuing Education.” The symposium aimed to create a collaborative space for knowledge exchange, strengthening partnerships across sectors, and identifying pathways toward culturally responsive and equitable mental health care for Black communities in Hamilton. This symposium was based on Dr. Waldron’s 2024 study on the structural and social determinants of mental health among Black youth in Hamilton (Waldron et al., 2024). The overall goal of the symposium was to generate sustainable connections between scholars and students, mental health policymakers, community leaders, community organizations, mental health service providers, and Black people to create integrated networks seeking to support the mental health of Black Hamiltonians. This involves leveraging strategic multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral partnerships and targeted knowledge mobilization approaches for addressing the challenges Black individuals experience accessing culturally competent mental health services in Hamilton. In this edition, we recognize and celebrate the research accomplishments of the faculty members, students, and others affiliated with the Centre along with the work of those who belong to our network of partners within Canada and internationally. The work of this multidisciplinary group of scholars supports the mandate of the CHRRJ and advances the crucial task of expanding our understanding of human rights and restorative justice. The Centre would not exist without their commitment and hard work. In this newsletter, we showcase our colleagues’ achievements over the past six months and highlight upcoming events in the new academic year. The arrival of a new member of the Centre’s External Advisory Committee is another development to celebrate. Dr. Crystal Fraser is Gwichyà Gwich'in and originally from Inuvik and Dachan Choo Gę̀hnjik in the Northwest Territories and is a faculty member at the University of Alberta. She is also the author of a recently published book, By Strength, We Are Still Here: Indigenous Peoples and Indian Residential Schooling in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. The Centre will benefit from her expertise and engagement with crucial current and historical issues. The faculty members, visiting scholars, and students affiliated with the Centre have accomplished a great deal to be proud of over the past months. During this new academic year, we will build on their achievements by continuing to work together and strengthen our research collaborations in Canada and abroad. On March 6, 2025, the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) hosted its first event of its hybrid speakers' series for 2025/26. The guest speaker was Dr. Antonio Paez, a Professor at McMaster University’s School of Earth, Environment and Society, where his teaching and research focuses on transportation and spatial analysis. Drawing on his work with the SSHRC-funded project, Mobilizing Justice, Dr. Paez presented “Just Transportation,” a talk about his search for standards of equity towards moving transportation planning and practice in the direction of greater justice. Dr. Paez’s talk was provocative and resulted in a lively discussion. Audience members addressed issues including the widely-held but mistaken belief that technology is neutral, and its implications for vulnerable populations; the institutionalization of racial hierarchies embedded in transportation infrastructure development; and the tyranny of scientific and technical expertise over social justice, amongst others. Dr. Paez also made the compelling argument that ideas to move towards transportation justice must go beyond the classroom and into practice. This engaging talk was well-received, with numerous questions posed by in-person and online participants. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz Dr. Ingrid Waldron launched her latest book on March 26, 2026 at McMaster’s Continuing Education Building in Hamilton. Titled From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter: Tracing the Impacts of Racial Trauma in Black Communities from the Colonial Era to the Present, the book challenges the colonial and imperial legacies of psychiatry, demonstrates how racial politics interacts with psychiatric diagnoses in relation to Black people, and attempts to interpret what these mean for the current public health crises. From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter focuses on the impact of racism on the mental health of Black communities in Canada, the UK and the US. It draws on existing literature and the voices of Black Canadians to pin-point how the intersections of race, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age and citizenship status shape experiences of racial trauma, mental illness and help-seeking in Black communities. The book also highlights the beliefs and perceptions Black communities hold about mental health and help-seeking. Waldron, a Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, and the HOPE Chair in Peace and Health within its Global Peace and Social Justice Program, delivered a passionate presentation on the book's main themes and findings to room packed with guests from the academic community and beyond. This was followed by an in-depth conversation with Dr. Alpha Abebe about the book’s main arguments, and then a question-and-answer session with the guests in attendance. This event was co-sponsored by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ). Pictures Credit: Abigail Samuels On June 23, 1985, a luggage bomb detonated on the Air India Flight 182, claiming 329 lives. Enroute to Delhi from Toronto, most of the victims of this atrocity were Canadians of South Asian descent, and tragically, the incident is little known in the nation’s public memory. In recognition of this loss, the memory of those lost, and the activism of those left to mourn, a 40th Anniversary Conference was held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, from May 24-25, 2025. The conference created a space for conversation and knowledge exchange between Air India family members, scholars, archivists, students, and the wider community. Through enriching dialogues, powerful testimonies, and poignant creative works, participants were immersed in deep engagement with the tragedy and its aftermath. Highlights included the launch of the Air India Archive; a roundtable for families to reflect on their experiences; a panel that discussed remembrance of loss through memoirs and memorials; and the screening of excerpts from a new feature film amongst others. The 40th Anniversary Conference was co-sponsored by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ), and organized by Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty, a member of the Centre and a Professor of English and Cultural Studies. Dr. Chakraborty has published extensively on the Air India tragedy and has been collaborating with the families who lost loved ones on Flight 182 for more than a decade to create the Air India Flight 182 Archive (https://airindiaflight182.humanities.mcmaster.ca) at McMaster University Library. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz From July 27-31, 2025, the trilingual Participedia School on Democratic Innovations in Latin America: Social Movements, Indigenous Peoples, and Traditional Communities was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa. This venue – a former home of Brazilian jurist, writer, and politician Rui Barbosa, and now a museum and research centre dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Brazilian culture, history, and literature – set the school within the heart of the city. With 55 registrants from 28 countries and territories, the school convened students, practitioners, community leaders, and researchers interested in democratic practices from Latin America, and global, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary exchange. It was a thought-provoking and inspiring week, offering an incredible opportunity to learn from, and alongside, peoples and communities centering traditional and ancestral knowledges within practice to confront and solve pressing challenges. Co-designed by 25 renowned organizations and institutions over the course of a year, Participedia School #Brazil featured trilingual programming rooted in community engagement and pluralistic knowledge production. Events included local visits to a nearby Quilombola community and a community of Rio de Janeiro’s Maré complex; panels of leading artists, researchers, and practitioners; and group case studies rooted in principles of design justice. Speakers participated across panels and active learning sessions, including Inory Kanamari, an Indigenous lawyer, humanitarian worker, and activist of the Commission for the Support and Defense of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of the Brazilian Bar Association of the Amazons, who spoke to the violences faced by Indigenous peoples of Brazil and the need for Indigenous rights and histories to be observed and diversely represented. Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh participated in a panel on the future of democracy, stressing the need for democratic change as we grapple with global challenges, while Dr. Paul Emiljanowicz joined the “Artistic Disruption and Reconstruction” panel, highlighting creative expression as a means of intersectional resistance. André Vargas, a local artist whose works feature across the Participedia School #Brazil graphics, also spoke during this session, grounding his artistic process within ancestrality, relationality, assurgence, and activism. As a graduate student, Participedia School #Brazil offered an incredible opportunity to explore too-often underrepresented knowledges from Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities, collaborate with a global cohort, and deepen my understanding of democratic innovations originating across Latin America. Planning the trilingual school was a valuable professional development experience, allowing me to engage in cross-cultural and multilingual collaboration, deepen my understanding of inclusive co-design practices, and strengthen the communication skills essential for facilitating an international event. It is an experience I won’t soon forget. Dr. Fiona de Londras, Director of Research and Barber Professor of Jurisprudence, and Dr. Emily Rozier, Deputy Director of Operations, both from the College of Arts & Law at the University of Birmingham, met with Dr. De Barros, Dr. Ibhawoh and Dr. Yilmaz. Picture Credit: Office of International Affairs (OIA) Bonny Ibhawoh From April 2-4, 2025, CHRRJ Member, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, played an active role in the Eleventh Session of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development at the UN HQ in New York. Given the current context of disruptions to the protection of human rights and sustainable development, the 11th session of the EMRTD focused on evaluating present challenges and identifying pathways to ensure continued commitment to international cooperation and financing for development. Drawing upon and contributing to ongoing negotiations for the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, FfD4, the 11th Session was guided by questions such as: how to face the new context at multilateral and national levels? And what does it mean for the right to development, and how to pursue the best level of engagement for development? During the Session, Dr. Ibhawoh presented a draft study to the panel on “Climate Justice, Sustainability and the Right to Development." This study, which was prepared with the support of the research team at the CHRRJ, was discussed by the panel, which included the Permanent Representatives of Vanuatu and Albania, as well as the Representative of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). Dr. Ibhawoh also chaired a panel on “Recent Reversals in International Development Cooperation and Their Impact on the Right to Development," which focused on the recent dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its implications for international development. Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh Urges Stronger Global Partnerships and Climate Justice at the United Nations At the 60th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, as Chair of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (EMRTD), presented his annual report highlighting the urgent need for stronger international cooperation for development and more equitable approaches to climate justice and sustainability on September 11, 2025. Dr. Ibhawoh underscored that development is not a privilege to be granted conditionally but an inalienable right of all individuals and peoples. He stressed that global partnerships and enhanced international cooperation remain essential, particularly for least developed and other low-income countries. He noted that ensuring mutual accountability, grounded in transparency, access to information, and effective remedies, is indispensable for advancing the right to development. On climate justice, Dr. Ibhawoh presented a framework and a set of practical strategies to guide more equitable and sustainable climate action. He called for the establishment of climate finance hubs to improve coordination and provide technical assistance, the creation of dedicated climate justice funds, and the appointment of climate ombudspersons at both national and international levels. He emphasized that climate action must be grounded in the lived realities, priorities, and aspirations of those most affected by the crisis. Dr. Ibhawoh expressed his appreciation to the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) at McMaster University for its support in advancing his UN Human Rights mandate. Picture Credits: United Nations Human Rights Council Chandrima Chakraborty The Gandhi Peace Festival, co-sponsored by the India-Canada Society of Hamilton and Region, the Centre for Global Peace, Justice & Health at McMaster University, and the City of Hamilton, is Canada’s longest-running peace festival. Founded in 1993 and inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s (1869–1948) philosophy of nonviolence, the Festival continues to promote peace, justice, and cross-community dialogue. Originally organized as a one-time celebration of India’s cultural heritage, the success of the event and the commemoration of Gandhi’s 125th birth anniversary in 1994 transformed it into an annual tradition. Each year, on the weekend closest to Gandhi’s birthday (October 2), the Festival brings Hamiltonians together to reflect on Gandhi’s vision of unity across religious, cultural, and social boundaries. This year it was held on October 4th, 2025. The event featured a rich program of speakers, cultural performances, workshops, and a peace march. The active participation of McMaster students, local environmental groups, and peace organizations also provided an opportunity to share resources and ideas on how to engage with pressing local and global issues. The Festival is a precursor to the closely linked Annual Mahatma Gandhi Lectures (https://gpsj.humanities.mcmaster.ca/centre-for-peace-studies/lecture-series/) on Nonviolence, which took place on October 8, 2025, with Dr. David Adams (Cultures of Peace, UNESCO) speaking to this year's theme, "Threats to Democracy and the World Order." Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz Annual Mahatma Gandhi Lectures On October 8, 2025, the Centre for Global Peace, Justice, and Health (https://gpjh.humanities.mcmaster.ca/community/mahatma-gandhi-lecture-series/) (CGPJH), in collaboration with the Global Peace and Social Justice Program, hosted the Annual Mahatma Gandhi Lecture on Nonviolence at McMaster University. This year’s lecture, titled “Protecting Peace and Democracy with Mahatma Gandhi in Mind,” brought together students, faculty, and community members for an inspiring evening dedicated to the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence. The featured speaker, Dr. David Adams, coordinator of the Culture of Peace News Network and former UNESCO official, shared insights from his decades of work advancing the global movement for a culture of peace. Drawing on Albert Einstein’s reflections about humanity’s moral responsibilities in the atomic age, Dr. Adams explored how Gandhi’s vision continues to offer guidance in confronting modern crises of violence, polarization, and democratic fragility. Pictures Credit: Melike Yilmaz Jorge Luis Fabra-Zamora The Human Right to Truth and Truth Commissions conference took place on June 6 and 7, 2025, at the University at Buffalo, and is sponsored by the Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy and the University at Buffalo School of Law. Dr. Fabra-Zamaro was the conference organizer and commentator. The event explores how the recognition of victims’ right to the truth represents a turning point in the relationship between law and historical understanding. Traditionally, legal truth was defined within judicial procedures governed by rigid rules, whose chief purpose was to safeguard the rights of the accused. In this framework, courts were focused on individual responsibility, leaving little space for broader historical reconstruction. A different conception emerged with the Nunca Más (Never Again) Report of September 1984, prepared by Argentina’s National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP)—the first successful truth commission in history. In this new approach, victims and society at large are acknowledged as holding a distinctive right to truth, one that is fulfilled primarily through the work of Truth Commissions and related bodies. Such commissions bring together experts from across disciplines, aiming not only to clarify particular incidents but also to uncover the systemic causes and contexts of periods marked by widespread violence and human rights abuses. In doing so, they create a record that judicial mechanisms alone cannot achieve. International and domestic instruments that enshrine the right to the truth consistently highlight its broader purpose: to restore dignity to victims while advancing transitions toward more democratic and peaceful societies. The event brought together writers, publishers, archivists, and scholars to celebrate the books, conversations, and communities that Sister Vision made possible. A partnership between the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Africa and Black Diaspora Studies (ABLD), and the McMaster University Library, the conference took place on Thursday, September 25, 2025, in Hamilton, Ontario.  For more information, please visit the  Sister Vision website. (https://sistervision.carrd.co) Michael Egan March 19th, 2025 marked the first McMaster Undergraduate History Society Student Massacree, & by all accounts, it was a resounding success. Designed as an outlet for undergraduate students to present their semester-long research projects in a supportive & engaging environment, the event offered a valuable space for academic exchange, feedback, & community-building. Held in Chester New Hall 607b from 12:30 to 16:30, the symposium drew a strong turnout of faculty, friends, & fellow students, all eager to hear from 8 dedicated presenters. These brave students showcased a wide range of historical topics from the social impact of Cholera outbreaks, to the nuanced explorations of 20th-century political movements. Each presentation reflected not only original research & thoughtful analysis, but also the presenter’s genuine enthusiasm for their subject. The variety of formats used included slideshows, speeches, & even short videos & added depth & creativity to the experience, making the afternoon dynamic & engaging. Following each talk, lively Q&A sessions allowed the audience to dive deeper, with both peers & professors asking insightful questions & offering constructive feedback. The entire event ran smoothly thanks to the careful organization & supportive presence of Dr. Michael Egan (History Professor), Ana Seplecan (President of the McMaster Undergraduate History Society), & Andrew Folino (Academic Department Manager) who played key roles in setting the tone for the day. Students gained valuable experiences presenting their work in a formal academic setting, building confidence ahead of final deadlines. Attendees left with a renewed appreciation for the range & quality of undergraduate research, as well as a stronger sense of community within the department. The day concluded with a small informal reception, where conversation flowed freely & students founded new connections across the intersection of their historical interests. This casual wrap-up offered a space to reflect on shared experiences, future research possibilities, & the importance of academic collaboration. Overall, the conference achieved exactly what it set out to do: celebrate student scholarship, create important dialogue, & highlight the value of undergraduate contributions to the discipline of history. As the first event of its kind hosted by the McMaster Undergraduate History Society, the Massacree set a high standard for future symposiums of the sort. The enthusiasm, preparation, & support from everyone involved made it clear that this is something worth continuing & building up on. Plans are already underway to make next year’s event even more ambitious & inclusive, ensuring that the tradition of student-led historical scholarship at McMaster University continues to grow. This grant will support the international conference  Democratizing Human Rights, jointly organized by the Participedia Project (hosted at the Centre) and the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) at McMaster University, taking place on October 23–24, 2025. The conference will bring together 30 leading and emerging scholars from fourteen countries, alongside graduate students and practitioners. Participants will engage in critical discussions on democracy and human rights and explore innovations in deliberative democracy from diverse perspectives.  Congratulations to Dr. Ibhawoh and his team! Congratulations to Dr. Melike Yilmaz, the research coordinator for the Centre, whose two photographs won awards in McMaster’s 2025 Art of Research competition. Her first image, “What the Water Remembers,” captured the top prize in the category Building an Equitable World; the photograph looked through a Cape Coast Castle doorway toward the ocean that once carried Africans who were enslaved, a reminder that to build an equitable world we must face what the water still remembers. Her second image, “Collective Memory,” earned the runner-up position in the category Promoting a Healthy Society, depicting rows of terracotta heads at Accra’s Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, a communal memorial; the photograph spoke to how health is not only individual but collective, shaped by how societies confront and heal from historical violence. Congratulations to Dr. Mauricio Cardenas Reyes, on his doctoral defence at the Université Grenoble Alpes, France. He was a visiting PhD student at McMaster University working with colleagues in the Department of Global Peace and Justice Studies, the Department of History, and the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) from March to July 2024. His research focuses on designing a system for teaching foreign languages (English and French) as a key pillar in providing training for teachers in rural, post-conflict areas. Dear CAHRI representatives, Thank you to those who participated in today's meeting (Adele Perry, Stefania Maggi, Penelope Simons, Shannonbrooke Murphy, Sandra Wisner, Melike Yilmaz and I). In terms of updates, we learned that the new CAHRI webpage should be ready by the end of SEPT or early OCT. We will continue to explore the option of becoming a part of the Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences or the Law and Societies Association. Shannonbrooke and Penelope will prepare basic information to share with a view to pursuing the discussion. Since the Federation will not have a Congress in 2026, we discussed about possible alternatives (events) where we could meet in person and the upcoming Civil Society Forum to be hosted in Winnipeg in April 20-21, 2026, could be a good option. More information will be shared on the listserv in case more members would consider participating. We also reviewed the Terms of Reference and made some final edits. CAHRI - last meeting and Terms of Reference for review

Participants included Anna Purkey, Adele Perry, Virginia Caputto, Christina Szurlej, Shannonbrooke Murphy, Erick Sullivan and me (HRREC/uOttawa). Our last virtual meeting was in June 2022, so there were several aspects in the agenda, such as to review the purpose for CAHRI, type of desired collaborations, degree of formality for the organization (idea to create an affiliate or association under the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences?), website and promotion, and the Canadian Human Rights Yearbook. To tackle the first two points, we agreed to work on terms of reference. After going through notes from previous meetings since the creation of CAHRI and incorporating content from similar groups, I am happy to propose a draft (enclosed). The document contains information about how CAHRI was created and what we have done so far. It also goes through aspects of our operations. Please feel free to review and make comments. N.B. we intend to finalize the ToRs during our next meeting (see below). Adele will send a reminder about the listserv (how to use it to share information), recognizing that this remains an appropriate way to share information among CAHRI members. Shannonbrooke's Centre will continue to host our webpage, so please send her any updates that have to do with your representatives, websites or joint initiatives of interest. Titled “The Frailties of Western Civilization,” the lecture explored themes of colonialism and imperialism, tracing their historical roots and connecting them to contemporary global crises. Speaking to a standing-room only audience which included people who had travelled from the far corners of New Brunswick, the human rights problem he addressed was this: “Civilizations are mortal. Is the current dominant civilization on its death-bed and if so, what is likely to replace it?” Mr. Ali is an Oxford-trained historian, novelist, and filmmaker. He has authored over fifty books on world history and politics, as well as six novels, including The Islam Quintet. His most recent books include Winston Churchill: His Times, His Crimes, and You Can't Please All: Memoirs 1980-2024. He is a longstanding editor at New Left Review and the Chair of Verso Press. The book addresses the perennial question of who has a ‘right’ to resist – and what, when, why and how – from a legal perspective. Meet the AHRC Project Assistant [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/e3e36bdb-4f92-9e…] Jazmyne LeBel is a third-year student at St. Thomas University pursuing a double major in Human Rights and Law, Politics, and Society, with minors in Criminology and Political Science. She is also an executive member of the STU Pre-Law Society, a Moot Court competitor, and an active member of the STU Human Rights Initiative. Last year, Jazmyne was recognized as a Top Third Oralist at the University of Toronto Moot Court Cup. She recently completed an internship with the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission through the STU Human Rights Internship course, and will shortly embark on a summer internship with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association in partnership with the AHRC. Currently, Jazmyne serves as the Project Assistant with the AHRC. Her work with the AHRC focuses on conducting an environmental scan of New Brunswick’s human rights sector including its academic, legal, civil society, governmental, and civil service components, as well as the relevant provincial legislation and jurisprudence. Through this research, she aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the human rights sector challenges and opportunities in the province. She says, “working with the AHRC has reinforced my passion for human rights advocacy and research, equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary for my future career in human rights law. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the Centre’s work and to collaborate with peers dedicated to advancing human rights in the region.” Meet the AHRC 2025 Intern Majd Mowahed is an international student from Syria currently in his third year of an Honour's degree in Human Rights. His commitment to human rights has been shaped by personal experiences, particularly through volunteering in Syria where he has contributed to various human rights initiatives. [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/26cbbf35-c7e7-ef…] Motivated by these experiences, Majd is currently working on a research project exploring the role of human rights commissions in Canada and internationally. His research involves conducting an extensive literature search on human rights commissions, national human rights institutions, and the Paris Principles, with the goal of creating an annotated bibliography under the guidance of the AHRC Director. Majd says that through this internship he is gaining valuable experience in human rights research and advocacy. “The opportunity to work with Dr. Murphy has been incredibly enriching, and I am learning a great deal about the practical application of human rights law,” Majd says. “Working with the Atlantic Human Rights Centre has been a particularly rewarding experience. The Centre’s commitment to advancing human rights, both locally and globally, aligns with my own values and aspirations. I am excited to contribute to the Centre’s mission and to continue expanding my knowledge of human rights law and practice. I am eager to learn from the talented team and to contribute to ongoing projects that make a real impact in the world.” Board Member Profiles Recently reappointed to the AHRC Advisory Board, Dr. Jamie Gillies connects Human Rights to Canadian Politics and Public Policy [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/2eeedb4d-9391-c3…] Dr. Jamie Gillies is Professor of Journalism and Communications, Chair of the Department of Journalism and Communications, and Executive Director of the Frank McKenna Centre for Communications and Public Policy. He is the editor of five books on political marketing in the recent Canadian and US elections. Dr. Gillies’s research focuses on executive leadership in Canada and the United States, political marketing and branding, and New Brunswick politics. He also writes about television, film and music. He has served on the board of the Atlantic Human Rights Centre since 2019. Dr. Gillies said, “The Atlantic Human Rights Centre is such an important space for discussion and exchange of ideas in these disruptive times. So many themes cross over between our respective disciplines and the AHRC provides a venue for these needed debates here at St. Thomas.” Meet the AHRC Vice-Chair, Dr. Kim Fenwick [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/b3dd92d3-c009-02…] Dr. Kim Fenwick has served as Vice-Chair (ex-officio) of the Atlantic Human Rights Centre Board since 2016. She holds a BSc from Acadia University, and an MA and PhD in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Fenwick joined the Department of Psychology at St. Thomas University in 1995 after teaching at the University of Western Ontario, and later served as Department Chair. She is also a past recipient of the University’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the author of numerous scholarly publications including her contribution to Witnesses and the Law. In 2012, she became Dean of Social Sciences, and was appointed Vice-President (Academic and Research) in 2016. She also served a 6-month term as Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of STU. Throughout her service to the AHRC she has ensured consistent high-level institutional support for our work. She says, “The Atlantic Human Rights Centre is an important resource not only for students and faculty at St. Thomas University, but also for the greater Fredericton community and the Atlantic Region. The Centre hosts two annual public lectures in human rights, the Dr. Bernie Vigod Memorial Lecture and the Dr. Abdul Lodhi Memorial Lecture. Through these lecture series, speakers of outstanding calibre have spoken on campus on topics such as the status of refugees, state brutality, government and corporate ethics, environmental ethics, the ‘deep state’, equality, individual rights, disarmament, profiling, racism, Indigenous law, among others. These lectures and other work undertaken by the Centre provides our students with outstanding learning opportunities in the classroom and engagement with society.” STU HUMAN RIGHTS PROGRAM UPDATES New Interdisciplinary Major: Reimagining Disability In the 2025-26 academic year, a new interdisciplinary major on human rights, ageing, and disability titled “Reimagining Disability” will be offered. Given New Brunswick's aging population, this interdisciplinary major will equip students and graduates with the skills needed to address the complex intersections of aging, disability, and human rights. Students will develop a deep understanding of policy, accessibility, and social inclusion, while gaining practical skills in research, advocacy, and community engagement. As part of this new major, a new course titled "Exploring Disability (HMRT-2113)" will be offered. The course will examine the history of disability and societal constructions of disability, including in media, workplaces, family, and environmental barriers. By examining ableism and ageism in society and how visible and invisible disabilities, including mental health and neurodiversity, intersect with our culture and institutions, this course will challenge cultural representations of disability in society by reframing disability as an issue of oppression, access, inclusion, and equality. Moot Court Update In- House Moot Court Competition [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/f4f9d961-4417-9b…] In November, STU Moot hosted an in-house tournament for the new Moot Court competition team. The case R. v. Hills asked whether a mandatory minimum sentence violated Hill’s Section 12 right to be protected against cruel and unusual punishment under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Students Grace Cunningham and Cameron Rouse (shown here left and centre) placed first out of their colleagues. Grace said, “Getting to compete in the in-house moot competition at STU was a great way to gain experience with mooting in a familiar environment while learning the ropes of effective oral advocacy.” Their prize for placing first included attending the Osgoode Cup at York University with the upper-year Moot Court team. Grace said, “The opportunity to compete at the Osgoode Cup with our team and against undergraduates who have been competing much longer than I have allowed me to get better with every round and have essential feedback from students and judges.” University of Toronto [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/89796783-3815-4d…] In February, six STU Moot Court competitors travelled to Toronto to compete in the University of Toronto’s Moot Court Competition to argue the case Canada (Attorney General) v. Power. Ellie Namit described it as “an amazing experience. The case was challenging for an undergraduate competition, as it dealt with intricacies of constitutional law. Where most competitions deal with rights violations this was more concerned with government functions, which took a lot of work to understand. But it also gave us insight into the workings of constitutional law and we learned a lot.” Ellie and Nicholas Reis moved on to the second day of the competitions. Together they beat out the first team and placed in the top eight. Nicholas. When asked how it felt to compete on the second day, Nicholas said “It was thrilling! It was an awesome feeling to have our work be recognized and move on to day two.” Profile of the STU Human Rights Initiative [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/672fa723-231a-da…] The STU Human Rights Initiative is a new student-led effort to promote human rights. This includes, but is not limited to, providing information, support, opportunities, and partnerships to the student body through engaging, motivating, and meaningful activities. Their goal is to offer everyone the opportunity to become human rights leaders and advocates for the issues that matter to them. Social issues and human rights are deeply interconnected, and human rights violations often serve as the root of deeply troubling societal problems that students may encounter in their life. The future of the Human Rights Initiative is to be recognized as a central avenue for addressing human rights issues both on campus and in the community. It aims to structure the initiative to foster collaboration and create projects that are acknowledged by the community. Manuel Garcia Manuel Garcia (BA Hons, Class of 2020) is a Consultation Advisor at the Department of Indigenous Affairs for the Government of New Brunswick. In this role, he is part of a team responsible for leading consultation with First Nations regarding private industry project proposals and provincial government initiatives. Garcia provides guidance to [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/f934b393-c9a8-b1…] both government and private sector proponents on their obligations under the duty to consult and accommodate First Nations. He strives to integrate a human rights lens into the insights he shares with decision-makers. Since graduating, Garcia has remained actively involved with the Human Rights Department at STU in various capacities. He has worked as a Research Assistant, Internship Supervisor and Grant Officer for the AHRC, and as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Shannonbrooke Murphy. Additionally, he is also a mentor in the Study and Succeed in NB program, a project led and organized by Immigration NB. As a former international student himself, Garcia supports newcomers by offering professional and personal guidance to help them navigate life in Canada and plan for their post-graduation future. Elizabeth Tuck [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/6eae31c9-dec9-4f…] Elizabeth Tuck (BA Hons, Class of 2020) is 1LJD/BCL Candidate at the McGill University Faculty of Law. After leaving STU, Elizabeth went on to pursue two master’s degrees: an MSc in Comparative Social Policy from the University of Oxford, and an LLM (with distinction) in Human Rights Law from Oxford Brookes University. Her LLM thesis argued that incarcerated people in the United Kingdom should have the right to vote on the premise that the disproportionate disenfranchisement – removing one’s right to vote – of people of colour ultimately dilutes their overall voting strength, and therefore violates the group element of the right to vote contained in Article 1, Protocol 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Elizabeth also has a focus on human rights for 2SLGBTQIA+communities on a local level through her work with Healthy Minds Cooperative based in Dartmouth, NS. Elizabeth leads suicide prevention programming for queer, trans, and 2Spirit communities, including increasing access to name changes for trans and non-binary people. She is also a long-time volunteer with the Girl Guiding movement where, in addition to running programming for girls and gender-diverse youth in her local community, she holds a volunteer position with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts focused on challenging appearance-related anxiety. Dispatches from Down the Hill: STU HMRTS Grads Making a Difference at UNB Law School [https://mcusercontent.com/2c8a37d98a8af39d412d788dc/images/c4a5e594-acb0-1f…] In March, the University of New Brunswick’s newly established Feminist Legal Association (FLA) hosted the Law Needs Feminism Because conference—a compelling event that explored the intersections of law, gender, and social justice. One of the main organizers was STU HMRTs grad Julia Evans (BA Hons, Class of 2023). Conference attendees learned from a powerful lineup of speakers who challenged legal norms and underscored the need for feminist approaches within the justice system. The event created space for meaningful dialogue and encouraged participants to reflect on how feminist legal thinking can shape a more equitable future. It also allows for a dialogue between judges who practice in these fields and who will share their experience on good practices promoting the participation of children in respect of their rights. The international research was conducted within the International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates (IAYFJM) with dozens of participating countries. The editor-in-chief of the AIMJF Chronicle, Eduardo Rezende Mel, a judge in Brazil, coordinated the research and will present the main results. In this newsletter, we recognize the wide-ranging research activities and events undertaken by the Centre’s network of researchers and collaborators. CHRRJ brings together a multi-disciplinary network of scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and community members to study human rights and restorative justice. These researchers are actively engaged in a range of important projects and activities, both within the Centre and beyond. This semester, the Centre is pleased to support several of its members’ events. These include Dr. Ingrid Waldron’s launch of her new book (From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter: Communities from the Colonial Era tothe Present); a talk in Dr. Paula Gardner’s Pulse Lab, by Dr. Smita Misra-Latty, titled “The Politics of Credibility: Medical Advocacy and the Fight for Migrant Health Justice”; and Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty’s, “Remembering Air India Flight 182: A 40th Anniversary Conference.” The Centre’s speaker’s series this semester features a talk by Dr. Antonio Paez on transportation equity, titled “Just Transportation.” This hybrid event will be held on March 6th and it promises to be an interesting and important discussion. (Details about the talk and registration are available in this newsletter and on the Centre’s website). In this issue of the newsletter, we are also pleased to highlight the impressive group of experts who have agreed to join the Centre’s external advisory board. The faculty members, visiting scholars, and students affiliated with the Centre have accomplished a great deal to be proud of over the past months. Over the next year, we will build on their achievements by continuing to work together and strengthen our research collaborations in Canada and abroad. CHRRJ External Advisory Committee Members The External Advisory Committee members provide expert advice to the director on the Centre’s priorities and opportunities for growth. The current members of this committee represent a range of disciplinary perspectives and conduct research on human rights, including on gender, migration, refugee experiences, and reparations for enslavement. Dr. Verene Shepherd Dr. Verene Shepherd is a world-renowned historian, and one of the Caribbean’s pre-eminent advocates for gender justice, racial equality and non-discrimination, reparations for the impact of chattel enslavement and colonialism, and the continuing harm of colonialism on African Diaspora communities. Dr. Shepherd is currently one of the three vice-chairs of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), as well as of the CARICOM Reparations Commission. She formerly served as Chair of CERD as well as of the Jamaican National Commission on Reparations (NCR) for 2012-16. Her most recent post was as founding Director of the Centre for Reparation Research at The University of the West Indies (2016-2024). Guided by the lens of subaltern studies, her research and writing specialize on migration, human rights and social justice, gender and Jamaican economic history. Professor Shepherd has authored many works, including  Lucille Mathurin Mair: A Biography (2020), The Gibson Relays: History & Impact on Jamaica’s Sports Culture and Social Development (2017), and  Engendering Caribbean History: Cross-cultural Perspectives (2011). She has won several honours, including the Order of Distinction, Commander Class in 2013, from the Government of Jamaica for her work in History and Gender Studies and The UWI’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for her public service work. Dr. Steven High Steven High is an award-winning professor of history at Concordia University whose research on the structural violence of deindustrialization has put Canada at the centre of important global conversations. Renowned for using oral history to ground his interpretations in the lives of working people, Professor High is the co-founder of Concordia University’s Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling. He has authored or co-edited a number of books and articles on the subject, including  Oral History at the Crossroads: Sharing Stories of Displacement and Survival. His recent works include Deindustrializing Montreal: Entangled Histories of Race, Residence and Class (2022) and Industrial Sunset: The Making of North America's Rust Belt (2003). His next book, The Left in Power: Bob Rae's NDP and the Working Class (2025), considers how social democrats responded to the unfolding industrial crisis. Steven High is currently leading a large transnational project investigating the politics of deindustrialization. Dr. Pamela Appelt Pamela Appelt served for 11 years as a judge of the Court of Canadian Citizenship, the first African-Canadian woman to hold this position widely-recognized as a generous volunteer and an active community member. Judge Appelt has maintained a strong and multifaceted connection with McMaster University, contributing significantly through her support of library acquisitions, substantial donations, and fostering collaborative relationships that have helped the university, which awarded her an Honorary Degree in 2022. She has dedicated her time and energy to several other community organizations, including the Ontario Black History Society, the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry and the Canadian Multiculturalism Council. Ms. Appelt was also a board member of the United Way of Greater Toronto; the Community Foundation of Oakville; the Healthy Community Funders of Halton; and Harbourfront Centre amongst others. She frequently addresses audiences about religious human rights, violence against women and children and issues that affect immigrants and visible-minority women. She is a recipient of the Order of Canada as of June 27, 2024. Dr. Michele Johnson Michele Johnson is an accomplished professor of history and Associate Dean in the Students in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. Professor Johnson is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and internationally renowned for her work on the history of the Caribbean and Black History in Canada, including Neither Led nor Driven: Contesting British Cultural Imperialism in Jamaica, 1865-1920 (with Brian L. Moore) and Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History (co-edited with Funke Aladejebi). Her research has been published extensively in articles and books that have shaped Black studies in the last four decades. Michele Johnson was honoured by York University with a Faculty of Arts Teaching Award and the Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award in recognition of her outstanding work with students in the classroom and for successfully mentoring numerous graduate students. Professor Johnson previously served as  a coordinator of the Latin A merican and Caribbean Studies Program and director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas. Dr. Annie Bunting Annie Bunting is a professor in the Law & Society programme at York University and York Research Chair in International Gender Justice & Peacebuilding. Her research expertise includes socio-legal studies of marriage and childhoods; feminist international law; contemporary slavery; and sexual and gender-based violence in war. She previously directed an international research collaboration on conjugal slavery in conflict situations with historians of slavery and women’s human rights activist scholars. Annie Bunting is the co-editor of Marriage by Force? Contestation over Consent and Coercion in Africa (Ohio 2016) with Benjamin Lawrance and Richard Roberts; Contemporary Slavery: Popular Rhetoric and Political Practice (UBC 2017) with Joel Quirk; and Research as More Than Extraction? Knowledge Production and Gender-based Violence in African Societies (Ohio 2023) with Allen Kiconco and Joel Quirk. Antonio Paez is a full professor in the School of Earth, Environment and Society at McMaster University, where he divides his time between teaching and researching, focusing on transportation and spatial analysis. A civil engineer by training, he was adopted into geography and has become an acclaimed social scientist. Among his accolades are the 2010 Meredith F. Burrill Award of the Association of American Geographers for policy-oriented research, and most recently the 2024 Edward L. Ullman Award of the Association of American Geographers, for his lifelong contributions to transportation geography. Antonio has a longstanding interest in the societal impacts of transportation, and is currently part of the leadership team of the SSHRC-funded project Mobilizing Justice. He lives in Hamilton, where winters are long but growing shorter every year. Workshop on Democratizing Human Rights: Towards an Inclusive and Participatory Human Rights Agenda A Project of the Participedia Human Rights Cluster Date: October 23-24, 2025 | Format: In-Person & Virtual The Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ), in collaboration with the Human Rights Research Cluster of the Participedia Project, is organizing a workshop on October 23-24, 2025, at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. We invite scholars, policymakers and practitioners in the fields of human rights, democracy and related disciplines to the workshop. This workshop will explore how participatory processes can address the tensions between majority rule and minority rights, and between the universality of human rights and the particularities of local contexts. The date June 23, 2025, marks the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing. Although this event was the largest mass killing of Canadian citizens in Canadian history, it is little known and seldom remembered in our national consciousness. A 2023 Angus Reid survey notes that nine-in-ten Canadians have little or no knowledge of this event. In memory of those lost and to honour the ongoing grief and activism of those left to mourn and seek wider recognition of this loss, we are planning a community-engaged scholarly conference. Our objectives are: 1) To educate the wider public on the Air India tragedy and its aftermath; 2) To center the voices and knowledge of Air India family members and advocacy organizations in public discourse and scholarly conversations; and 3) To foster knowledge exchange between scholars, creative artists and family members researching, writing about, or creating artistic responses to the bombing of AI Flight 182. Through this conference, we hope to reach a diverse range of stakeholders, including researchers, students, press, artists, the general public, and policymakers. In an era where health justice is increasingly politicized, medical professionals who advocate for migrant health often find themselves at odds with institutional policies, public discourse, and professional norms. This talk examines the complex relationship between medical advocacy and credibility. It explores how physicians and healthcare workers negotiate their roles as both trusted medical experts and political actors. Using case studies of physician-advocates who have spoken out on issues such as migrant detention, asylum seekers' access to care, and pandemic-era border restrictions, this talk considers the barriers that discourage political engagement among medical professionals. These include the risk of professional censure to catering to politicized expectations of "neutrality." The talk will also cover some of the strategies that physician-advocates use to demonstrate credibility, mobilize support, and push for systemic change. Rather than framing advocacy as either a professional risk or an ethical responsibility for medical professionals, this talk asks what is at stake when those in positions of medical authority choose to speak (and how)—or remain silent (and how)—on issues of political and structural harm." About the Speaker: "Dr. Smita Misra-Latty is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Waterloo. An interdisciplinary scholar, her research explores topics like physician-advocacy, migrant resistance, the social construction of health, and medical authority. Her book project, titled Curating Believability, examines how physician-advocates and activists navigate a culture of suspicion due to their support of asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants. She teaches courses in science communication, race and gender studies, as well as seminars on critical health communication." Afterlives of Feminist Revolutions Conference The Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) recently co-sponsored the Afterlives of Feminist Revolutions Conference. This event, which was held on December 14, 2024, included panels that examined multiple intersections of gender and social justice, including digital feminist activism and the politics of resistance; connected struggles and transnational activism; as well as art and activism in the face of oppression. The conference also included an art exhibition. The event drew participants from all across the globe, including academics, emerging scholars, and human rights practitioners. Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh Advocates for Climate Justice at COP29 in Azerbaijan  At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), held in Azerbaijan from November 11-22, 2024, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, a member of the McMaster Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ), presented the preliminary findings of his climate justice study mandated by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Supported by a team of researchers at the Centre, Dr. Ibhawoh’s work shed new light on the ethical dimensions of global climate action.  In addition to his presentation, Dr. Ibhawoh engaged in bilateral consultations with key stakeholders, emphasizing the urgent need to address climate change through the lens of justice and equity. His contributions underscored the importance of incorporating the perspectives of the Global South into climate negotiations, which have historically been dominated by the interests of the Global North.  Dr. Ibhawoh’s study focused on the concept of climate justice, which highlights the uneven distribution of climate change’s impacts across the world. Describing it as a “cruel case of injustice upon injustice,” he stated, “The people who stand to suffer the most from climate change have the least responsibility for causing it and the fewest resources to avoid its ravages.” He argued that those who have benefited most from carbon-intensive development bear an ethical responsibility to reduce emissions and support the communities most affected by climate change.  Dr. Ibhawoh called for a more inclusive and equitable process, pointing out that the current system lacks legitimacy due to its failure to adequately address the needs of vulnerable nations. His advocacy for a more ethical and inclusive approach resonated strongly with participants and demonstrated the essential role of climate justice in achieving sustainable solutions. The aim of this course is to provide students and professionals with the fundamentals of international humanitarian law and the opportunity to apply this knowledge through realistic case studies and a full day of simulation exercise. Applications are welcome from university students, government employees, non-governmental organizations, journalists, and anyone interested in learning more about IHL. Preference will be given to participants with a background in the application or the theory of IHL, international human rights law or humanitarian work. The summer school will be taught by leading Canadian and international scholars and experts from the Department of National Defence and the Department of Justice Canada. Please note that the registration forms for the 17th edition of the Summer School on IHL will be available on March 1st, 2025.
