In child populations, this includes needs such as income, housing and food security, which are fundamental indicators of health equity. Yet, children can have their basic tangible needs met and still be far from living fulfilling lives. Intangible resources-such as spirituality-are also essential to flourishing. The term spirituality often carries with it "conceptual baggage", which may be one of the reasons that the spiritual dimension of health is essentially ignored by mainstream health agendas and not often considered in a robust manner in children's rights discussions. This is short sighted. Spirituality is an important indicator of health equity, and the 35-year anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognizes spirituality four times, is an opportune time to consider the relationship between spirituality, structural justice, and flourishing. Join our guest speaker, Dr. Valerie Michaelson, Associate Professor in Health Sciences at Brock University. Her collaborative and change-generating research focuses on health equity, children's rights and spiritual rights. In addition to studying how social, structural and cultural contexts shape health and well-being, Dr. Michaelson also explores the complex ways that culture, religion and spirituality shape human beliefs, attitudes and behaviours, including in relation to colonization. The majority of her transdisciplinary and reciprocal research focuses on child and adolescent populations. In this issue, we recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of the Centre’s members and others affiliated with CHRRJ, both in Canada and abroad. Their research and related activities support and advance the Centre’s goal of expanding our understanding of human rights’ issues, today and in the past. The CHRRJ brings together a multi-disciplinary network of scholars, policymakers, and practitioners who study human rights and restorative justice. This newsletter shows that the conferences, publications, and other activities that our members and collaborators have undertaken since Winter 2024 advance the Centre’s mandate in diverse and creative ways. Events such as the launch marking the publication of Dr. Proscovia Svard and Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh’s new book Documentation from Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (resulting from a conference that the Centre organized) is just one example. Another is the Participedia conference and summer school held in South Africa this past June. As Nnamdi Nnake shows in his description of this event, engaging students in activities like this is a key part of the Centre’s mandate. Through their involvement in these and other events, the Centre’s members contribute to scholarly understandings of human rights and restorative justice and to efforts to advance public conversations on these important subjects. The Centre itself provides important logistical and financial assistance for these activities. Through its support for conferences and its collaborative book series with McGill-Queens University Press (“Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice”), it helps disseminate the results of its members’ research. The Centre’s new speakers’ series (established last year) provides yet another venue that members and collaborators can use to engage with colleagues and members of the wider community. For our Winter 2025 Speakers’ Series, we look forward to the upcoming talk by Dr. Antonio Paez (March 2025) on his work with the “Mobilizing Justice” project which addresses transportation equity policies. During the year ahead, the members and associates of the Centre will have many opportunities to build on these accomplishments by continuing to pursue their research and other activities and by developing new and exciting projects. The Book Launch of Documentation From Truth and Reconciliation Commissions The book Documentation from Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, edited by Dr. Proscovia Svard and Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh and published by Routledge in 2024, was launched on September 17th with an in-person event at Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, alongside a simultaneous event at McMaster University in Canada. This book originated from a virtual conference titled “Truth Commissions: Issues of Access and Ownership”, which was co-organized in October 2022 by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ), Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba (Canada), the Social Science Research Council’s African Peacebuilding Network Program (USA), and the Nelson Mandela Foundation (South Africa). The book launch was hosted in a forum that encourages scholarly dialogue, and it featured contributions from prominent experts who discussed the significance of documentation in the reconciliation process. Dr. Trudy Peterson of the International Council on Archives, Human Rights Section was the commentator at the book launch. Dr. Tunde A. Abioro of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria and Mr. Daniel Ospina Celis of Dejusticia, Colombia, briefly commented on their chapters. The book itself compiles a diverse range of case studies and critical analyses from various truth commissions worldwide. The authors emphasize the importance of documentation as a means of preserving historical memory and as a tool for fostering accountability and promoting restorative justice. During the launch, speakers underscored the role of truth commissions in confronting past atrocities and the challenges faced in ensuring that the voices of victims are heard and validated. The discussions also touched upon the broader impact of such commissions on policy-making and societal attitudes towards justice and reconciliation. Book Discussion on “Democracy and the Legacies of Truth and Reconciliation” The 2024 Participedia Partners Conference was hosted at the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town, South Africa) between June 6-7, 2024. The conference program included a capstone panel on “Democracy and the Legacies of Truth and Reconciliation,” organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) and the Participedia Partners Conference. The panellists were Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh (McMaster University, Canada), Dr. Serges Kamga (University of the Free State, South Africa) and Dr. Jasper Ayelazuno (University of Development Studies, Ghana). The panel was moderated by Dr. Fiona Anciano (University of Western Cape, South Africa). The panel’s discussion centred on the book Truth Commissions and State Building. The panellists commented on the contributions of the book to the scholarship on democracy and transitional justice. During the Question and Answer session, panellists reflected on the context and legacies of commissions in various countries. After the panel, the editors signed copies of the book and donated copies to local civil society organizations represented at the event. The hybrid event was open to the public, drawing in-person participants from Cape Town as well as online listeners from around the world. The reception that followed provided a welcoming atmosphere for dialogue on the issues raised in the book. Participants at the event included academics, policymakers, community leaders, and representatives of NGOs and activists. A Conversation with Dr. Michele Johnson An interview conducted by Matthew Monrose and Dr. Juanita De Barros with York University’s Dr. Michele Johnson as part of the Centre’s Speakers’ Series was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (vol. 49, no. 2). Dr. Johnson is the former coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program at York University and the former director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and Its Diasporas. Titled “Reflections on Researching the Caribbean and Black Canadian History: An Interview with Michele Johnson,” the article (and the CHRRJ interview on which it was based) focused on Dr. Johnson’s work on Caribbean history and her recent, award-winning co-edited publication, Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History. The interview covered historical methodology (including the use of oral sources), the history of gender, and Black Canadian history, including the West Indian Domestic Labour Scheme. Katie Lewis, Nnamdi Nnake and Nadim Al Nakhl helped shape it into an article. Members News New Book by Dr. Ingrid Waldron We are excited to share the cover and description of Dr. Waldron’s forthcoming book From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter: Tracing the Impacts of Racial Trauma in Black Communities from the Colonial Era to the Present. The book will be published on November 25, 2024. You can pre-order the book at Emerald Publishing starting on October 26, 2024, here (https://bookstore.emerald.com/from-the-enlightenment-to-black-lives-matter-…) . “Ingrid Waldron has done something truly remarkable: authored a definitive exploration of the effects of racism on Black mental health.” - Jonathan M. Metzl, Author of What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms Since the Age of Enlightenment, Black bodies have been sites of trauma. Drawing on anti-colonial theory, From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter interrogates how this has shaped understandings of Black life, Black trauma and Black responses to trauma within psychiatry and other mental health professions. Focusing on the impact of racism on the mental health of Black communities in Canada, the UK and the US, author Ingrid R.G. Waldron examines the structural inequities that have contributed to the legacy of racial trauma in Black communities. Drawing on existing literature, as well as the voices of Black Canadians who participated in recent studies conducted by the author, Waldron uses an intersectional analysis to pinpoint how the intersections of race, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age and citizenship status shape experiences of racial trauma, mental illness and help-seeking in Black communities. Tracing the ideological representations of Black people within psychiatric and other mental health institutions that influence the diagnoses applied to them, chapters also highlight the beliefs and perceptions Black communities hold about mental health and help-seeking. A timely challenge to the colonial and imperial legacy of psychiatry, From the Enlightenment to Black Lives Matter demonstrates how the politics of race and psychiatric diagnosis collide when diagnosing Black people and what this means for our current public health crisis. Ingrid R.G. Waldron is Professor and HOPE Chair in Peace and Health in the Global Peace and Social Justice Program in the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, and an active member of the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice. New Edited Book by Dr. Jorge Fabra-Zamora We are excited to share the cover and description of Dr. Jorge Fabra-Zamora’s forthcoming volume, co-edited with Gonzalo Villa-Rosas and Jorge Nunez, Kelsen’s Legacy: Legal Normativity, International Law and Democracy. This volume offers a comprehensive examination of Hans Kelsen's legal and political philosophy, focusing on four central themes. The first part analyses Kelsen's theory of norms, including its periodisation and concepts of validity and coercion. The second part explores his perspectives on international law, addressing its structural analysis, primitive law characterisation, and teleology. The third part examines Kelsen's theory of democracy, its relationship with the pure theory of law, collective will, and democratisation of the administration. The final part discusses Kelsen's influence on the Vienna School of Legal Theory and its impact on case law and jurisprudence beyond Europe. This collection is essential for scholars and practitioners seeking to understand Kelsen's legacy. Jorge Fabra-Zamora is currently an Associate Professor of Law at the University at Buffalo School of Law, State University of New York, and an active member of the Center for Human Rights and Restorative Justice. The Centre provided support for the following international conferences and workshops organized by its members in 2024/25. “Austin Clarke, Black Studies and Black Diasporic Memory Conference”, September 26-27, 2024 Conference Co-convenor: Dr. Ronald Cummings “Transnational feminist dialogues: Intersecting struggles in the wake of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' uprising in Iran Conference”, December 14, 2024 Conference Co-convenor: Dr. Paula Gardner “Air India Flight 182: A 40th Anniversary Conference”, May 23-24, 2025 Conference Convenor: Dr. Chandrima Chakraborty “Workshop on Democratizing Human Rights: Towards an Inclusive and Participatory Human Rights Agenda”, July 2025 Conference Convenor: Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh From September 21-23, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, UN human rights expert on the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, participated in the United Nations Summit of the Future held at the UN Headquarters in New York. The summit brought together 142 world leaders, marking a critical moment for global governance and multilateralism. At the summit, three pivotal outcome documents were adopted: the Pact for the Future and its two annexes—the Declaration on Future Generations and the Global Digital Compact. These documents represent a collective commitment to reinvigorate multilateral cooperation in addressing pressing global challenges, including climate change, inequality, and technological governance. Dr. Ibhawoh engaged in high-level consultations and bilateral discussions with state delegates, focusing on practical strategies for operationalizing these principles in the context of global development goals. The UN Pact for the Future serves as a foundational framework for McMaster University’s Global Dialogues on Global Challenges, aligning local and international efforts to address some of the most urgent issues of our time. Sara Abdella We’re excited to share that Zeynep Yilmaz, the host of the Just Participation podcast series, whom I co-founded the podcast with, represented the series at the Participedia Partners Conference 2024, held from June 6-7 in Cape Town, South Africa. During the conference, Participedia’s director, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh and other presenters highlighted the podcast as a key initiative within the Participedia project. During the conference, Zeynep engaged with numerous attendees, exploring their work and projects to identify potential guests for upcoming podcast seasons. Upon her return to Canada, she brought back a diverse lineup of potential guests. The team is currently researching their backgrounds, exploring how best to pair them for upcoming episodes, and crafting topics. The next season seeks to spotlight grassroots work, blending academic insights with real-world applications in the field of democratic innovations. The actual theme of the season will be a surprise! Stay tuned for what’s to come! Grants Awarded Congratulations to Dr. Paula Gardner, who was awarded the SSHRC Connection Grant for “Transnational feminist dialogues: Intersecting struggles in the wake of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' uprising in Iran.” Congratulations to Dr. Melike Yilmaz, who was awarded McMaster’s International Initiatives Micro Fund Grant (IIMF) for the “The Voices of Refugees and Displaced Persons Project.” Awards We are happy to share that Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh's edited book Truth Commissions and State Building, which emerged from a series of conferences organized by the centre, has been awarded the ASA Best Africa-focused Anthology or Edited Collection Prize. (https://africanstudies.org/asa-news/african-studies-review-2024-prize-winne….) https://bookstore.emerald.com/from-the-enlightenment-to-black-lives-matter-… Reflections on the 2024 Participedia Partner's Conference and Summer School Over a two-week period this summer, I joined a global cohort of scholars, political scientists and policy makers, to partake in the 2024 Partner's Conference and Summer School hosted by Participedia in conjunction with the Politics and Urban Governance Research Group at the University of the Western Cape. The Partner’s Conference was held from June 6-7 and consisted mostly of expert panels which examined the past work and future plans of Participedia’s different clusters within thematic frames of: (1) accountability within and beyond the State; (2) charting new paths for representation, rights and new materialisms; (3) digital democracy; and (4) theories, practices and traditions of deliberation and transparency. One major part of the Conference was the book launch for a collection of essays titled, Democracy and the Legacies of Truth and Reconciliation, co-edited by Professor Bonny Ibhawoh, the Director of Participedia. The Participedia School on Transnational Democratic Innovations (Summer School), opened in a hybrid format on June 10, joining attendees at two in-person campuses; one situated at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the other at the University of the Western Cape. For the next week, Summer School attendees reflected on citizen participation and tested new ways of deepening democracy. Its fourfold objectives were to facilitate exchange between early career scholars and experts in the field; enable knowledge sharing through co-design and co-learning; knowledge synthesis; and professional development. The Summer School encompassed several highlights, including a panel discussion titled, “Challenges and Possibilities in Global Democratic Governance”, which featured Vijay Prashad of the Tricontinental Institute, and Ambassador Keisha McGuire of the Present and Future Institute. Another panel examined questions of global governance through hot topics like genome editing, as well as AI and algorithms. Participants also applied the principles of Design Thinking to brainstorm on problems of democratic innovation and transnational governance. These included case studies on truth and reconciliation commissions, sanitation, and renewable energy. By applying the Participedia Design Project and Canvas, Summer School students critically analyzed these issues and developed recommendations. As a graduate student, the opportunity to network with experts in the field of democratic innovation was a great addition to my professional development. However, the implementation and protection of these rights have often been uneven, as international human rights laws are frequently shaped by geopolitical dynamics and interests, questions of national sovereignty, and assertions of cultural particularities. Over 75 years later, the universality of human rights remains both a foundational ideal and a source of ongoing tension, as the practical application of these rights often reflects imbalances in power and privilege. The challenges of universal human rights lie in the gap between theoretical principles and the diverse realities of global populations. International human rights frameworks are frequently shaped by a top-down approach, with little room for local voices—particularly those from marginalized or vulnerable communities—to influence how rights are defined and upheld. This imbalance has prompted calls for the democratization of human rights: a process that invites broader participation in the interpretation and implementation of human rights, allowing for the voices of ordinary people to play a more central role in shaping the global rights agenda. The democratization of human rights also seeks to transform local and international institutional practices to have the capacity to apply rights equitably. Two key elements of this democratization process are democratic innovations—comprising new forms of participatory governance—and deliberative democracy—centered on reasoned discussion and collective decision-making Both have emerged as critical frameworks for revitalizing democracy. These approaches offer pathways to deepen citizen engagement, enhance the quality of decision-making, and overcome some of the limitations inherent in traditional democratic models. Yet, democratic practices alone are inadequate to ensure the protection of marginalized or vulnerable populations. To foster truly just and equitable societies, democracy must be mediated by human rights principles, ensuring that political systems not only reflect the will of the majority but also protect the rights of all individuals, particularly those who might otherwise be marginalized or silenced. The relationship between democracy and human rights is thus fundamentally symbiotic. Democracy reinforces the inclusive and universalist ethos of human rights, while human rights principles serve as a critical check against the potential "tyranny" of majoritarian rule. We invite scholars, policymakers and practitioners in the fields of human rights, democracy and related disciplines to submit paper proposals for a workshop on democratizing human rights. This workshop will explore how participatory processes can address the tensions between majority rule and minority rights, and between the universality of human rights and the particularities of local contexts. Proposals should draw connections between democracy and human rights. We are also interested in proposals to examine how democratic innovation and mechanisms of deliberative democracy can help actualize the core principles of human rights—such as dignity, equality, and justice—by making them responsive to the needs and voices of all people, especially those who have historically been marginalized, both within states and transnationally. We welcome proposals that explore, but are not limited to, the following themes, and consider diverse theoretical and empirical perspectives: 1. Democracy and the Philosophical Foundations of Human Rights 2. Universal Human Rights and Democracy in the International Political Order 3. The Sociopolitical Implications of Deliberative Democracy for Human Rights 4. Democratic Innovations, Deliberative Technologies and Human Rights 5. As you can see the next conference is in September and there is also information about the annual gathering in 2025. You will also find a call for institutes/centres who may be interested in becoming members. If this is the case of your organization, please let me know as the application requires a sponsor and HRREC could play this role. Our Centre has been a member since 2015 and I am currently serving in their Executive board. Happy to answer any questions you may have to decide on this point. We would like to reach out to see if there are other similar student groups in any AHRI centre or institute with whom our team could connect. The Department of Anthropology and the Centre for Human Rights Research (CHRR) look forward to hosting Dr. Sai Kyi Zin Soe (USydney) for a lecture titled Dancing with the fire in limbo: the consequences of Myanmar migrants' ambiguous legal status in Thailand on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 10:30 am CDT in 409 Tier Building. If you are unable to join in-person, you can register to attend the Zoom webinar at: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_vEHcxIfJRhG-J6YjWb1Nug Dr. Sai Kyi Zin Soe is a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Disability Research and Policy, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Currently, he serves as a Senior Consultant at the Foundation for Education and Development (FED), dedicated to assisting Myanmar migrants in Thailand. Additionally, he provides support to the Karenni State Interim Parliament (KSIP) in the capacity of a Technical Advisor. Dr. Soe earned his PhD from the University of Sydney, completing his thesis in 2019 on "Influence of Donor Aid Policy on Disability Inclusion in Myanmar." This underscores his commitment to promoting inclusive practices within development sectors. He was the recipient of the Australia Awards Scholarship in 2014 and the Australia Leadership Award in 2014 and 2015. His areas of expertise encompass disability and social inclusion, human rights and minority rights, local governance, and federalism. Following the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, he actively contributes political analysis and commentary to media platforms, advocating for human rights, inclusion, and federalism. In this publication, we highlight the research accomplishments of the faculty members, students, and others affiliated with the Centre, both in Canada and internationally. Their efforts support the Centre’s work of expanding our understanding of human rights and restorative justice. The Centre’s recent collaboration with McGill-Queens University Press has resulted in a book series (“Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice”) which provides opportunities for CHRRJ members and their collaborators to disseminate their research on human rights and restorative justice, both in Canada and abroad. The series’ first publication is Truth Commissions and State Building, a collection of essays edited by Bonny Ibhawoh, Jasper Abembia Avelazuno, and Sylvia Bawa. This volume consists of articles produced at a recent CHRRJ-sponsored conference. In January 2024, the Centre held a book launch to celebrate the publication of this collection. Two more books are in the series’ pipeline, both of which resulted from CHRRJ-sponsored conferences. These manuscripts and the conferences on which they were based demonstrate the intellectual energy of the Centre’s members and collaborators and their engagement with pressing policy issues. The Centre’s new hybrid speakers’ series (which benefited from the generous support of McMaster University’s Research Centre and Institutes Engagement Fund) provides another forum for researchers to explore issues relating to human rights and restorative justice. Under the auspices of this series, the Centre co-sponsored a talk in October with McMaster University’s new Centre for Research on Community Oriented Entrepreneurs (CRCE). The CRCE’s director (and member of CHRRJ), Dr. Benson Honig, organized a talk by Dr. Arnon Degani titled “Still Processing: The Oslo Peace Process at 30.” The rich and lively discussion that followed this well-attended presentation demonstrates the value of the speakers’ series and indeed the willingness of CHRRJ members to facilitate important discussions about crucial current events. In the final event of our speaker’s series for 2023-2024, Dr. Michele Johnson joined us for a fascinating conversation about her research. Along with a PhD student from the History Department, Matthew Monrose, I talked to Dr. Johnson about her work on the Caribbean and the African diaspora, her experiences as the director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and Its Diasporas, and her new co-edited book, Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History. Those in attendance appreciated hearing about Dr. Johnson’s work over the years and responded with thoughtful questions. The faculty members, visiting scholars, and students affiliated with the Centre have accomplished a great deal to be proud of over this academic year, and I am delighted to have this opportunity to recognize their work. A Conversation with Dr. Michele Johnson On 13 February 2024, the Centre (CHRRJ) hosted Dr. Michele Johnson in a profound conversation about her work on African diaspora, Black Canadian, and Caribbean histories. Dr. Johnson holds a Ph.D. in History from Johns Hopkins University and has taught in the Department of History at York University since July 2002. Amongst other eminent contributions, she has served as the former coordinator of York’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies Programme and was the Director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas from 2013 to 2018. This event was unique, both as the final episode in the Centre’s inaugural, hybrid speaker series that engages experts in diverse disciplines and geographies; and for its format which took the form of an informal conversation. Dr. Johnson was interviewed by Dr. Juanita De Barros, and PhD candidate, Matthew Monrose, both of the History Department at McMaster University. Their discussions centered Dr. Johnson’s research on the history of the Caribbean and the African diaspora and her recent co-edited collection, Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History (University of Toronto Press, 2022). The conversation covered a range of topics, including gender and domestic work; oral history, archives, and research methodologies; diversity in the Black and African communities; the rhetoric and reality of Canadian multiculturalism. Guest Speaker Dr. Arnon Degani The Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ), in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Community-Oriented Entrepreneurship (CRCE) at McMaster University, hosted Dr. Arnon Degani as a guest speaker. Dr. Degani is a historian specializing in the history of Zionism, Palestinian nationalism, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On November 23rd, 2023, Dr. Degani’s guest speaking appearance entitled “Still Processing: The Oslo Peace Processes at 30" focused on examining the Oslo Accords and contributes to the debate on if and how the settler-colonialism comparative framework benefits the study of Israel and Palestine. Dr. Degani’s professional background ranges from teaching courses in Middle East Studies, Jewish studies, and global histories of colonialism to being a member of the University of Pennsylvania's Middle East Studies regional scholars program and a Fellow at Hebrew University's Avraham Harman Center for Contemporary Jewry. His talk was met with interest across the campus. Book Launch & Discussion On January 25, 2024, the Centre (CHRRJ) hosted a hybrid launch event for the first volume of its book series, “Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice.” Co-edited by Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, Dr. Jasper Abembia Avelazuno, and Dr. Sylvia Bawa, this inaugural volume is titled Truth Commissions and State Building and was published by McGill-Queens University Press. The book is a collection of essays written by experts and it permits comparative analysis via the application of varied lenses to examine truth commissions in various African countries. Speaking on its objectives and the target audience, Dr. Ibhawoh noted that the book would appeal to academics, policymakers, and practitioners as it engages the ongoing dialogue on truth commissions which act as both a measure for driving transitional and restorative justice, as well as a mechanism for rebuilding post-authoritarian and post-conflict states. Other highlights of the event included a keynote speaker, Dr. David Webster, an expert on truth commissions, and chapter summaries by Abena Asare, Jasper Ayelazuno, Roger Southall, and Sylvia Bawa. The book launch also featured a Q&A session that touched on the effectiveness of truth commissions, their importance for sustaining historical consciousness in post-conflict societies, and the tensions between interpreting truth commissions as legal or cultural phenomena, amongst others. With the successful launch of the first book in its series, the CHRRJ reflects the intellectual energy and commitment of the Centre’s members and collaborators. Discussion of Truth Commissions and State Building in South Africa Participedia’s Partners Conference will be held at the University of Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 6 & 7, 2024. The conference program includes a discussion of Truth Commissions and State Building, the first book in the centre's series “Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice” with McGill-Queens University Press. Chapters in this book explore the possibilities and limitations of truth commission processes as democratic innovations - participatory, deliberative processes that can have transformative impacts on post-conflict and post-authoritarian societies. The chapters draw on data from the Global Truth and Reconciliation Commission Collection of Participedia, which analyzes Truth Commissions as innovative deliberative and dialogic processes and the Truth Commissions Report Database of the Confronting Atrocity Project, which is housed in the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice. Visiting Scholar Dr. Lin Sun, who has been a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) for the past year, returned to her University in China in February. Dr. Sun is an Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Gender Studies at the Center for American Studies, School of English Studies, Shanghai International Studies University, China, and was a visiting scholar at the Centre from Feb. 2023 to Feb. 2024. Her research and teaching focus on African American literature, motherhood studies, Black feminism, and intersectionality. She has just completed her research on “Identity Politics of American Black Motherhood” under the supervision of Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh. Her recent work has appeared in The Routledge Companion to Intersectionalities (2023). Visiting PhD Student Yeison Mauricio Cardenas Reyes is visiting McMaster to develop research on peace and pedagogy. Cardenas Reyes is a Colombian doctoral student at l’Université Grenoble Alpes in France, where he is working on peace pedagogies through language instruction. His research is interested in designing a system for teaching foreign languages (English and French) as a key pillar in providing training for teachers in rural, post-conflict areas. Through his project, Mauricio posits that these language initiatives are key components of the larger principles of peace education. He will be at McMaster University, working with colleagues in the Department of Global Peace and Justice Studies, the Department of History, and the CHRRJ, from March to July 2024. On Tuesday, November 28th, at 12noon CST, the Centre for Human Rights Research and Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR), will host "Innocents Behind Bars: Systemic Racism and Wrongful Convictions." The event will take place at the MTS Classroom, CMHR. The competition has two categories: Undergraduate and Graduate. Applicants must submit a paper on an issue related to children's rights. The paper must have been prepared as part of a course or for degree requirements and must include all citations and notes. The texts can be written in French or English. In this edition, we recognize and celebrate the research accomplishments of the faculty members, students, and others affiliated with the Centre as well as the work of those who belong to our network of partners within Canada and internationally. The work of this multidisciplinary group of scholars supports the mandate of the CHRRJ and advances the crucial task of expanding our understanding of human rights and restorative justice. The Centre would not .exist without their commitment and hard work. In this newsletter, we showcase our colleagues’ achievements. With the end of most pandemic restrictions, we have been able to transition to in-person events which have allowed for rich and exciting exchanges. But the virtual techniques we used during the pandemic remain useful and indeed, most of our events are now hybrid. One example is the recent and very successful colloquium on “Narratives of Trauma and Memory: The Legacies of the Human Rights Violations Investigations Commissions in Nigeria and the National Reconciliation Commission in Ghana.”This event was held in Nigeria, but the hybrid format allowed attendees from Canada and elsewhere to participate. The Centre’s new speakers’ series is also benefitting from these innovations. With support from McMaster University’s Research Centre and Institutes Engagement Fund, we will hold two hybrid events in the 2023-24 academic year. On October 4, Dr. Sascha Auerbach, the director of the Institute for the Study of Slavery at the University of Nottingham, gave a talk on “Late-Stage Slavery and Encounters with the Colonial State in the British Empire, 1823-1831.” And in February 2024, I will join a PhD student from the History Department (Matthew Monrose) to interview Dr. Michele Johnson about her research, her experiences as the director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and Its Diasporas and her new book, Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History. Under the auspices of this series, CHRRJ will also co-sponsor a hybrid talk with McMaster University’s new Centre for Research on Community Oriented Entrepreneurs (CRCE) in October 2023. The hybrid format for these events will allow researchers at all career stages from across Canada and beyond to attend and contribute to our discussions. Our recently established book series is another exciting development that reflects the intellectual energy and commitment of the Centre’s members and collaborators. Created in collaboration with McGill-Queens University Press, “Confronting Atrocity: Human Rights and Restorative Justice” would not exist without the vision and hard work of my two co-editors, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh and Dr. Paul Ugor. The series’ first book - Truth Commissions and State Building – will be published in November 2023. Co-edited by Bonny Ibhawoh, Jasper Abembia Avelazuno and Sylvia Bawa, this volume consists of articles produced for a recent CHRRJ-sponsored conference. We expect that the series will provide an outlet for research projects undertaken at the Centre as well as external manuscripts that speak to the series’ themes. The faculty members, visiting scholars, and students affiliated with the Centre have accomplished a great deal to be proud of over the past months. Over the next year, we will build on their achievements by continuing to work together and strengthen our research collaborations in Canada and abroad. Colloquium on Narratives of Trauma and Memory: The Legacies of the Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission (The Oputa Panel) in Nigeria and National Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Ghana Convenors: Dr. Rasheed Olaniyi University of Ibadan, Nigeria Colloquium Coordinator Dr. Olutayo Adesina University of Ibadan, Nigeria Colloquium Lead Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh McMaster University, Canada Project Director, The Confronting Atrocity (https://truthcommissions.humanities.mcmaster.ca) The one-day hybrid colloquium took place on August 2, 2023 - organized by the Department of History at the University of Ibadan (Nigeria), the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) and the Confronting Atrocity Project. It was virtually co-hosted by Sara Abdella, an RA at the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice, as well as Dr. Melike Yilmaz, a Research Coordinator at the Centre and in-person organizing committee Oyinade Adekunle, a member of the Centre. In addition to being organizing committee members for the colloquium, the Centre assisted with facilitating paper presentations and keynote addresses from the insightful panels in the hybrid event. The colloquium attained a significant milestone in exploring human rights violations and reconciliation in Nigeria and Ghana, serving as a forum for rigorous intellectual discourse and fostering cross-cultural understanding. The keynote speakers emphasized the significance of delving into narratives of trauma and memory to facilitate healing, justice, and national cohesion. They underscored how the legacies of commissions shape the socio-political landscape and set the stage for the day's discussions, emphasizing the urgency of addressing historical injustices and promoting reconciliation. The Colloquium featured thirty-eight presenters from twenty-seven institutions, comprising scholars, graduate students, lecturers, independent researchers, and experts devoted to unravelling the intricacies of African reconciliation processes. These paper presentations traversed various political eras in African communities, which created a rich tapestry of insights on the themes. Paper presentations were organized into three concurrent panel formats (one virtual panel and two in-person formats) and addressed different aspects of human rights, memory, and reconciliation. These sessions provided a platform for insightful and productive deliberations, giving voice to various narratives and experiences in Nigeria and Ghana. Attendees engaged in nuanced discussions, unveiling the challenges and successes of African reconciliation processes. A notable highlight was the seamless facilitation and tech support McMaster University and the University of Ibadan representatives provided. Their efforts ensured the smooth execution of the event, enabling the unhindered exchange of ideas and experiences among participants from different time zones. Over the course of eleven hours and numerous panel sessions, it became evident that the Colloquium had achieved its objective of shedding light on narratives of trauma and memory while fostering constructive dialogues on reconciliation. The outstanding quality of paper presentations sparked discussions regarding a journal publication of exceptional papers. ============================================================ Dr. Sascha Auerbach The Centre for Human rights and Restorative Justice has recently established a new hybrid speakers’ series, with support from McMaster University’s Office of the Vice-president and the Research Centre and Institutes Engagement Fund. Dr. Sascha Auerbach gave the first talk in the series on October 4, 2023, “‘To Go and Look for Law’: Late-stage Slavery and Encounters with the Colonial State in the British Empire, 1823-1831.” Dr. Auerbach specializes in the history of race, imperialism, and the state in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is the director of the Institute for the Study of Slavery at the University of Nottingham (U.K.) as well as the co-editor of the Cambridge University Press book series “Histories of Slavery and Its Global Legacies.” He is the author of many articles and book chapters and three books. His most recent book will be published in 2024 by Cambridge University Press and is titled The Overseer-State: Slavery, Indenture, and Governance in the British Empire, 1812-1916. Dr. Auerbach’s talk was well-attended, and the audience members asked interesting and thought-provoking questions, resulting in a lively and fascinating discussion. The talk was a great start for our new speakers’ series. Truth Commissions and State Building Book Bonny Ibhawoh, Sylvia Bawa and Jasper Ayelazuno, eds. ** Truth Commissions and State Building (https://www.mqup.ca/truth-commissions-and-state-building-products-978022801…) (McGill Queens University Press, 2023). Truth Commissions and State Building presents the first comparative study of the role of Truth Commissions in state building. It examines truth commissions as mechanisms for civic inclusion, identity formation, institutional reform, and nation (re)building in post-conflict and post-authoritarian societies. More than just an opportunity to uncover fact after conflict, truth commissions can also offer restorative power to nations across the globe. This book emerged from a series of conferences organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice. Chapters of the book draw on data from the Truth Commissions Report Database of the Confronting Atrocity Project which is housed in the Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice. Hosting Visiting Scholar Between September 11th and September 22nd 2023, the Centre hosted a Visiting Scholar, Dr Maree Higgins, from UNSW Sydney (Australia). Dr Higgins is a social worker and a human rights scholar who convenes the BSW(Hons) Program at her home university. Her human rights research focuses on refugee inclusion, lived experience-led research, girls who go missing and resurface in the criminal justice system, and treatment and rehabilitation of people with disabilities and mental health disorders in places of detention. Dr Higgins visited McMaster University’s Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (CHRRJ) while on sabbatical to understand the work of the Centre and engage with like-minded scholars. She has particularly focused on future human rights-based research and knowledge exchange activities. While at the CHRRJ, Dr. Higgins had stimulating meetings with the Centre Director Dr. Juanita De Barros, and the centre members. ALPHA ABEBE & KAREN BALCOM ** Dr. Alpha Abebe and Dr. Karen Balcom (https://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/articles/celebrating-excellence-in-teaching-a…) were the recipients of the 2023 President’s Awards for Outstanding contributions to Teaching and Learning, the highest distinction a faculty member at the university can receive for teaching excellence. Dr. Abebe’s students describe her teaching approach as nothing short of transformative, as her methods encourage them to challenge societal norms and harmful modes of thinking, especially concerning equity-seeking groups, empowering them to identify areas for personal growth, and fostering a classroom environment that embraces learning as a holistic approach. Dr. Balcom’s achievements as an educator was described as innovative, as she recognizes the importance of viewing each student as a unique individual and nurtured their personal development alongside their academic journey. Her commitment to teaching innovation is exemplified by groundbreaking initiatives, including the development of History's first archives-immersive experiential course, co-taught in collaboration with colleagues from the university archives. BENSON HONIG ** Dr. Benson Honig (https://www.degroote.mcmaster.ca/articles/mcmaster-researchers-awarded-over…) was awarded funding through the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund to expand a virtual entrepreneurial incubator that will help women, refugees, minorities, immigrants and persons with disabilities develop economic sustainability in the post-COVID era. The project focuses on building entrepreneurial capacity in marginalized refugee communities, reducing financial instability and improving access to support and resources for owners of small and micro businesses, who were significantly impacted during the pandemic. BONNY IBHAWOH We are pleased to share the latest newsletter of the ** Participedia Project (https://participedia.net/)   housed in the  ** McMaster Centre for Human Rights and Restorative Justice (https://chrrj.humanities.mcmaster.ca/) . Under the directorship of Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, SSHRC Partnership Grant-funded project has been actively mobilizing research knowledge to enhance democracy and public participation locally and globally. Particularly noteworthy is the role of Participedia in facilitating the recent public debates on the  ** Ontario Greenbelt (https://yourgreenbelt.ca/) BONNY IBHAWOH, MELIKE YILMAZ & ADEBISI ALADE For the last two years, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, Dr. Melike Yilmaz and Dr. Adebisi Alade have been working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to study transitional justice in the Lake Chad Basin region, which is recovering from a decade-long conflict and insurgency by Violent Extremist Organisations (VEOs). Dr. Ibhawoh presented the research reports and recommendations to the LCBC Governor’s Forum in N’Djamena, Chad, on 5-7 July 2023. This research exemplifies the complementarities between academic theory, grassroots practice, and policy-making in international human rights, development, and transitional justice work. Significantly, it provides a framework for victim-centered justice and  strategies for reconciliation, humanitarian aid, and long-term development efforts in the region. This October, they will present another aspect of that transitional justice  study  in Africa  during  a  workshop on children and childhoods  at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. CHANDRIMA CHAKRABORTY ** The Annual Mahatma Gandhi Lecture (https://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/articles/climate-change-refugee-expert-robert…) on Nonviolence and the Gandhi Peace Festival hosted by the Centre for Peace Studies and the Global Peace and Social Justice Program were held in the first week of October. Both of these long-running campus-community engagement events bring together McMaster faculty and students, local community organizations and peace activists to discuss an issue of significance to the local Hamilton community. This year’s topic was Climate Change Refugee Migration and the speaker was environmental scientist and former diplomat, Dr. Robert McLeman. INGRID WALDRON Dr. Ingrid Waldron’s organization the ENRICH Project received ** funding from the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund (https://novascotia.ca/news/release/?id=20230911003) (Government of Nova Scotia) to lead a project on building capacity in African Nova Scotian communities around climate change preparedness. Dr. Waldron discussed her work on environmental racism with the ** Policy Options Podcast (https://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/september-2023/inequality-environm…) . Dr. Waldron launched ** a new study (https://www.saltwire.com/atlantic-canada/communities/new-case-study-launche…) she is conducting with Dr. Juliet Daniel (Biology, McMaster), Dr. Paola Marignani (Medicine, Dalhousie) and others at a town hall on August 9 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. The study, which is being funded by a new Frontiers -Exploration grant, is identifying the factors contributing to high cancer rates in the African Nova Scotian community in Shelburne. Dr. Waldron’s organization the ENRICH Project is partnering with the Youth Connection Association to conduct ** a project (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/windsor-environmental-racism-survey-…) that is engaging Black students in grades 5-9 in Windsor-Essex, Ontario to participate in focus groups to share their perspectives on how the school curriculum can better incorporate the experiences of environmental, climate and urban planning issues in Black communities in Windsor-Essex and Canada. This project is being funded by the Trottier Foundation. Dr. Waldron shared her thoughts about environmental racism with ** the Pointer (https://thepointer.com/article/2023-07-23/environmental-racism-comes-to-lig…) . Dr. Waldron’s ** 2020 study (https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca/health/nova-scotia-sisterhood-delivering-hea…) on Black women’s experiences with mental illness and help-seeking in the Halifax Regional Municipality led to the creation and recent launch of the Sisterhood Initiative, a new health service for Black women in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Dr. Waldron received a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant to conduct a study on climate change preparedness in black communities in the GTHA in partnership with the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist and the Toronto Environmental Alliance. Dr. Waldron’s organization the ENRICH Project recently received funding from ** Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2023/06/apples-racial-equity-and-justice-ini…) to conduct projects on environmental and climate justice. The ENRICH Project also received funding from Dragonfly and Lush to carry out environmental projects. JUANITA DE BARROS Dr. Juanita De Barros won an SSHRC Insight Grant in spring 2023 to for her project on “Historical Perspectives on Colonial Abortion Laws in the British Caribbean.” She is the Messecar Professor in the History Department for the 2023-24 academic year. SARA ABDELLA The Just Participation Podcast Team, with RAs Nadim Al-Nakhl and Zeynep Yilmaz, is working on a mini-series on decolonial knowledge production and practices of radical citation co-produced by Kanishka Sikri, PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. The mini series will explore radical citation with an emphasis on methods, emphasizing that how we talk about democratic subjects is just as important as what we talk about. The podcast is building a new framework that will transition their first season to their second season by navigating how researchers and practitioners have built their practices in their own lives. Dear colleagues, I trust this finds you well in these troubling (and busy) times. I am addressing you with regard to the following two matters: 1. Wrt the request from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights request to join CAHRI, I have received a handful of positive responses and no negative reactions to my suggestion that CMHR be offered a qualified membership of CAHRI (in the status of "Observer" or "Associate" without voting rights for CAHRI decisions). If I hear no definite negative reaction from CAHRI members by end of 31 October, I will convey to the CMHR a positive response to their request (as qualified - for which I understand they are entirely positively disposed). 1. I would hope and expect that Volker is the best HC so far given his career experience in the UN and broad field work etc. which none others had in the same measure/character (well, Sergio & Bertie did... but all too short in office).
