French message follows,
Dear colleagues,
From November 25th to December 10th of 2018, the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign will take place around the world and thousands of individuals and organizations will raise awareness about gender-based violence as a truly global issue. In Canada, Women in International Security Canada (WIIS-Canada) and its partners - Atlantic Human Rights Centre (St. Thomas University), Canada Federation of University Women, Canadian Labour Congress, DisAbled Women's Network Canada, Grandmothers Advocacy Network, Immigration Women Services Ottawa, Native Women Association of Canada, New Brunswick Multicultural Council, Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women, Women’s Shelters Canada and Zonta Club of Ottawa - are leading the effort to create a national campaign and wish to invite your organization to participate by hosting an event or spearheading an advocacy initiative.
The goal of the 16 Days campaign in Canada this year is to promote a nation-wide series of events and activities under the theme “End Gender-Based Violence in the World of Work.” Your event can take different formats, from a panel discussion or debate, a vigil, a fundraiser to a film screening. You can also organize social media events, for example, webinars and Twitter “Teach-ins,” during which facts on and information about gender-based violence will be shared with each tweet bearing the campaign hashtags. You can view past event calendars on the WIIS Canada’s 16 Days website<http://www.wiiscanada.org/16days/> for ideas.
Attached to this email you will find the 2017 Campaign report. In order to submit an event/initiative to be featured on the campaign’s calendar, you need to fill out a short online form<http://www.wiiscanada.org/submit-an-event-2018/>. On our website, you will also find general guidelines, additional information about the campaign as well as resources. All events in the calendar will be promoted through our website and social media platforms. Participation in the campaign has no cost to your organisation. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at 16Days(a)wiiscanada.org<mailto:16Days@wiiscanada.org>.
On behalf of the 16 Days Canada Campaign Steering Committee, we sincerely hope that you will join us and share this invitation widely. In solidarity,
Viviana Fernandez

Dear colleagues,
I trust this finds you well and happily/busily engaged in the new academic year!
See attached a self-explanatory open letter to PM Trudeau. It has over 100 signatories including many notables - including a few members of our network (Hooray!). There are scores of Profs from 19 Universities across Canada. We'd like to get over 20 Universities indicated :) and especially to include Human Rights Centres!
Might you sign-on (either in your personal capacity or for your Centre)?
Grateful for your consideration.
Sorry for the very short notice, but we need a response by Monday morning at 10am Ottawa-time because there will be a Press Conference at Parliament on Monday afternoon.
If you are willing to sign-on, please indicate your preferred title.
Thanks and Cheers!
John

As the latest reports demonstrate inescapable pre-planning for the attacks on the Rohingyas last year (and still ongoing almost a year later!), it seems clear that a more focused and determined response from the IC, including Govt of Canada, is needed.
The authors of the letter (myself amongst them) are seeking a wide range and array of organisations and individuals to sign-on - hopefully with strong HR participation and cross-Canada geographic representation.
Responses to sign-on should be addressed to Mr Fareed Khan at the email address indicated below. We hope to get this submitted in early August, hold a Press Conference and rally support for cross-Canada demonstrations on 25 August - the one-year anniversary of the last year's spate of egregious attacks.
Thanks in advance!
Best wishes,
John

Attached is the final draft.

Dear all,
Thank you to those who were able to join us this afternoon. Here is a short summary of the main points we discussed and next steps:
- Canadian Human Rights Yearbook<https://cdp-hrc.uottawa.ca/en/publications/canadian_yearbook_human_rights>: This publication was relaunched by HRREC at uOttawa a couple of years ago and John Packer proposed it as a possible publication vehicle for our group. He will send more details about an invitation to appoint a member of each of our institutions to the editorial board of the journal and ways in which we can collaborate going forward.
- CAHRI web page<https://cdp-hrc.uottawa.ca/en/publications/canadian_yearbook_human_rights>: the group agreed to add information about special programs/courses/summer schools organized by our institutions. In order to do so, please send the name of the activity with a link to Christina Szurlej cszurlej(a)stu.ca<mailto:cszurlej@stu.ca> who hosts the page. In order to raise awareness about CAHRI, we commit to post information about the group and the page a few times a year on our own social media platforms.
- Listserv and sharing information: the group agreed to share information about upcoming events and special programs, job opportunities/internships/scholarships/etc. through the listserv to facilitate the promotion in our own communities. Invitations to sign petitions or letters can be shared on the listserv but institutions will decide according to their own policies. Members are asked to share only a limited number of such petitions every year. Joint actions on key files of national importance can be considered.
- Discounted rates for CAHRI members: members can consider offering discounts to other CAHRI institutional representatives, if appropriate.
We look forward to reading about your news and updates.
Best wishes,
Viviana

Good afternoon,
I am pleased to let you know that the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on the Rights of the Child <http://droitcivil.uottawa.ca/interdisciplinary-research-laboratory-rights-c…> (LRIDE) at uOttawa would like to join our group.
The Steering Committee met today and approved the idea. I will send the login information for the listserv to Prof. Mona Pare (CC), who founded the laboratory and who will likely be their representative in our group.
Thank you in advance for adding LRIDE to the website with the list of our members.

Hi Viviana,
Our director, Prof. Karen Busby, has decided not to attend RightsCon. However, I will be attending the CASHRA conference in Whitehorse June 26-27 and would be happy to connect with anyone else from the Canadian Association of Human Rights Institutes<http://wp.stu.ca/ahrc/association-of-canadian-human-rights-institutes/> who plans to be there.

Dear colleagues,
John Packer and I are planning to attend the conference RightsCon<https://www.rightscon.org/program/> in Toronto (May 16-18) and we were wondering if this could be an opportunity to hold a group meeting if some of you are planning to go? Happy to discuss with those interested.
Best wishes,
