Academic Integrity is a matter of paramount importance in academia. It is the foundation of scholarly work. Yet too many graduate students find themselves facing allegations of breach of Academic Integrity. To help graduate students better understand the issues surrounding Academic Integrity, the Senate of the University of Manitoba passed a motion requiring all graduate students to take a compulsory tutorial on Academic Integrity.
Beginning in the Fall 2015-16 all graduate students must register for and complete GRAD 7500 Academic Integrity Tutorial. This is a zero (0) credit-hour course intended to introduce students to their basic responsibilities regarding academic integrity and to the resources available to them.
Students who registered for GRAD 7500 in Fall 2015 have until December 23, 2015 to successfully complete the course. New students who are starting their graduate program in Winter 2016 are required to register for GRAD 7500 in Winter 2016 term: CRN 26205
Failure to successfully complete this course will result in suspension of registration privileges.
This course runs entirely online and is comprised of a series of brief videos (the total duration of these videos is approximately 1 hour) followed by a true/false test. Students must achieve 100% on the test in order to complete the tutorial and receive a pass grade for the course. If necessary, the test may be taken multiple times until a 100% grade is achieved.
The Academic Integrity course is accessed through UM Learn using your JUMP login. To access the course, go to https://universityofmanitoba.desire2learn.com/d2l/login. Enter your UMNetID username and password. Once you have logged in, click GRAD 7500 - Academic Integrity tutorial under My Courses. Additional details are provided on UM Learn once the course is entered.
Complete instructions for the tutorial are attached to this email and available here.<http://umanitoba.ca/graduate_studies/htmlmail/Academic_Integrity_Instructio…>

We (soil science graduate student association ) are going to have a "soils" themed bake sale next wednesday Dec 2 1230 - 130 at our dept. seminar series since National Soils Day is Dec 5 and is a Saturday. Dr. Mario Tenuta will be presenting that day as well.
If anyone wishes to volunteer some baking they can email me
(westphme(a)cc.umanitoba.ca) by Monday to let me know if they would like to donate some baking and where to bring it to store until the bake sale. It doesnt have to be soils themed but if they wish to get creative the option is there. All proceeds will be going to the SSGSA.
Thanks so much,

Subject: Need help for a field visit
Hello,
I am looking for some help (2 students) for my field visit from Oct 26 to 28 to a First Nations community 500 km away from Winnipeg . We will collect water samples from homes, water treatment plant and lake and will do some onsite water analysis (turbidity, chlorine... etc...). This would be a good opportunity to experience First Nations culture and customs and Winnipegosis and food and accommodation will be provided.
If you are willing to help me and available on those mentioned dates, please email me at eragodag(a)myumanitoba.ca<mailto:eragodag@myumanitoba.ca>.

All,
It sounds like the practice evening went well and has resulted in some
modifications that should improve the experience for the Grade 8 students.
Thanks to everyone for setting up and for those who tested out the
activities and provided feedback.
Just to ensure that we are all caught up on the changed format, here are
the details. We will have all of the Grade 8 students on both Oct 15 and
22. The latest information I have is that there will be 36 students in
total and they should arrive around 5:00 p.m. We will arrange to have them
all come upstairs to Room 318.
We decided to run 3 of our activities on Oct 15 and the other 3 on Oct 22.
Oct 15 - Nutrients in Soil (Room 346), pH/Conductivity (Room 318), Soil
Ecology (Room 333)
Oct 22 - Physical Properties (Room 318), Technology and Soil (Room 346),
Soil and Water (shed)
We will split the Grade 8 students into 3 groups on both evenings. They
will cycle through the 3 activities on each evening over three 40-minute
time slots. 5:15 to 5:55, 6:00 - 6:40, 6:45 to 7:25.
The changed format means that there will be more students in each group and
they will be spending more time at each activity. Therefore, it would be
helpful for grad students with activities on Oct 22 to help out those on
Oct 15 and vice versa.
If there are any concerns or unresolved issues, let me know right away.
Otherwise, I look forward to next Thursday.
Thanks for all of your creativity and work!

Hello everyone,
Tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. (Oct 8) is the time we set aside for a practice run
on the Soil Science CanU Grow activities.
The spaces in Rooms 318, 333 and 346 should be available starting at 4:00
p.m. so you can set up your apparatuses beforehand. I have attached the
list of people looking after each activity station. We would like other
graduate students to come at 5:00 p.m. and do a hands-on test of the
activities. It will provide an opportunity to make any adjustments needed
before the Grade 8 students arrive on Oct 15 and 22.
If you are a graduate student who is not looking after an activity and are
planning to attend, please let me know.
Mitch may not be able to get set up tomorrow. However, we have space set
aside for him in the shed, so he will be here for the Grade 8 students for
sure.
I am waiting to confirm whether there may be a change in the format of the
2 evenings. We may have all 40 students with us on both nights. If this is
confirmed, then I will schedule a meeting and we can discuss options to
handle this if it occurs.
In the meantime, tomorrow is to confirm that everything is working as per
your plans. And no matter how many Grade 8 students are coming each day,
we need to know if the activities all work as planned.
See you tomorrow.

Here is my status update, Paul.
1. The estimated footprint of my learning station has been communicated to Tim (rainfall simulator being “permanent-ish” while supporting pieces are temporary).
2. Assembling my learning station this Thursday is a possibility but is contingent on another extension event that day in Oakville. If assistance from a student that day can be arranged it would be more feasible to sync the ~1 h set-up with the test run that day. My earliest ETA, however, is 17:00 contingent upon being able to travel directly from Oakville to campus. As the gear will already be in the truck following an extension event at Pilot Mound on Wednesday, I would like to get this installation done either Thursday (first choice) or Friday (second choice). However, this week is rather nuts nuts nuts and there will be a different learning station to manage after the Oakville event as well. To be confirmed...
3. Regarding staffing my station, I may follow up with undergraduate students of Dr. Lobb’s field methods course, however, there have been no firm commitments from that potential source. A summer student from the Crops Branch in Carman may follow through on her tentative indication of availability.

Subject: Re: Soil Science CanU Grow - preparation to deploy
Hi Everyone,
First I want to thank you for the enthusiasm and effort put into planning and implementing these modules! I have looked over the documents and have no concerns for the evening.
I can confirm there will be a minimum of 2 student chaperones on both of the evenings with the CanU group. I will make note that you will need a third chaperone for that third group for both of the evenings and will keep you updated.
I'm very excited to see these stations carried out, I know the students will have a great time.

There is a schedule outlining the overall timeline of events on each evening. We need to consider the set up and take down of each station on each day because the space will be needed for other uses in between sessions. I have tried to build that into the schedule. Mitch, can you let me know about how much lead time you require to get set up? I will need to confirm with Tim that we can get into the shed by 3:00 for Mitch's station to get set up. If more or less time is required, I need to let him know. Rob, I don't think it will be a problem for students to start assembling activity stations at 4:00 p.m. on Oct 8, 15 and 22 but I just want to check with you to be sure about it. Room 346 is booked for all 3 evenings starting at 4:00. I don't think that there is anything scheduled for Room 318 and 333 at that time.
There is also a list of activity station workers for the three evenings. This was compiled at Monday's meeting and there are a few gaps. Megan and Abolfazl, can you confirm your availability at the Soil Ecology station for the three evenings and for set up and take down? Magda and Gustavo, you have helped Mitch in the past. I realize that corn harvest may interfere with your availability for CanU Grow. Should we try to identify some backup workers to assist Mitch? Amberlee, can you confirm that there will be 2 student chaperones on each evening? We want to divide the students into 3 groups, so we will need at least 1 more chaperone, if that is the case.
I also have a rotation designed to accommodate Mitch's request that the students first go to the Nutrients in Soil activity before they come to his station. The rotation will facilitate that flow and allow each activity station about 20 minutes to "reset" between groups. Note, that all of the students will start in Room 318, which may help to get everyone started by having them in one place at the beginning.
Please note, on October 8, we want ALL the grad students to come to Room 318 at 5:00 p.m, not just the workers at the activity stations. That night is designed to be a practice run, so the the activity station grad students will have a chance to get set up. Then we need at least a couple of groups of other grad students to go around the circuit and test out the activities at each station. Mitch, you have done this many times before, so let me know if you rather skip the practice and the work to set up on October 8. Based on the experience from Oct 8, we may want to make some adjustments prior to the Grade 8 students coming on Oct 15 and 22.
Finally, I would ask each of the activity group coordinators to forward me the 1-page description of the workstations provided on Monday. I have Timi's write-up. They will be kept together in an archive for future CanU academies.
Thanks to all who have spent time and energy to pull the activities together. It is very impressive and I am excited about seeing it go ahead.
Let me know if you think of anything else.
