Dear colleagues, Following on John Packer's note from May 1st (see below), we wanted to propose a time for the CAHRI annual meeting on June 16th. You will receive an invitation for a one hour meeting at 2pm EST and the session will take place in our offices, Fauteux Hall room 559. We will also offer the possibility to join virtually through zoom, if travelling is not an option at this time. We know that some of you are coming to Ottawa to participate in the gathering to mark the 40th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedom (June 16-17) we are organizing and we look forward to seeing you. Dear CAHRI member representatives/supporters, Happy May Day - at last! (I shouldn't jinx things, but it's finally a beautiful spring day at least in Ottawa... despite snowing again LAST WEEK!) I hope you are well and have survived (or are near to completing tasks arising from) the academic year - a second COVID-affected one with many challenges. I am addressing you with regard to a few matters as follows: First, we should have an Annual Meeting to catch-up, exchange views and perhaps decide one or two things. I am taking the liberty of suggesting we meet on Thursday 16 June. We/HRREC would happily arrange and host the meeting. Second, one important subject is to make progress with the Canadian Yearbook of Human Rights (CYHR). For various reasons, it has been a struggle to get it done during the pandemic... but I am pleased to say the third issue is very near to publication (and includes a Special Section on COVID, guest edited by Alex Neve, and another Special Section profiling a handful of Canadian human rights advocates... of whom too little is known or as examples of careers). The immediate need now is to take steps for the next issue (2022-2023). We/HRREC are prepared to offer a modest honorarium for a Managing Editor and we will continue to cover production costs. The previously expressed hope is that CAHRI member entities would each nominate someone for the Editorial Board and that CAHRI would take up the publication as a more fully cooperative endeavour. We are aware that, previously, a few of you did respond positively and even identified a representative for an intended CYHR Editorial Board, but most did not respond. The time seems good to complete this task and move the initiative forward if there is sufficient interest. Third, on 16-17 June we/HRREC are hosting at uOttawa Faculty of Law a youth-oriented gathering around the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, There will be parallel sessions on Thursday 16 June and a larger plenary and public day on Friday 17 June. There are some associated initiatives - including political cartoon and photo-journalism competitions with which we're working with various partners and intend an online and physical exhibition. For the parallel meetings on 16 June, we will have one group of Law students and Human Rights students from across Canada, while students of journalism will be meeting in parallel as well as a group of our own "alumni". Friday, 17 June, will include representatives of government, implementing institutions, some who contributed to elaboration of the Charter 40 years ago, and a panel looking ahead at gaps and contemporary pressing issues. As we are hosting this gathering, we would be pleased to include a representative from each CAHRI member for whom we would cover the costs in Ottawa; there is no fee, so it is only transportation costs which we are not covering. If enough CAHRI members would be represented, then we could hold CAHRI's Annual Meeting bi-modally (some in-person and others joining online). Do please let us know the following: 1. Human Rights in Ukraine course

perhaps of interest? I am on the board of the University of Arizona's Masters of Human Rights Practice and received this email from them. Their classes are always of high quality. Dear Shayna. We have put together a pretty unique course about human rights in Ukraine that will run from mid-May until the end of June. This is a course open to students for credit, as well as for community members (for a very low price). It will consist of a number of guest lecturers from the regions and on the ground, and address important and timely issues relevant to us all in all fields and walks of life. Third, on 16-17 June we/HRREC are hosting at uOttawa Faculty of Law a youth-oriented gathering around the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, There will be parallel sessions on Thursday 16 June and a larger plenary and public day on Friday 17 June. There are some associated initiatives – including political cartoon and photo-journalism competitions with which we’re working with various partners and intend an online and physical exhibition. For the parallel meetings on 16 June, we will have one group of Law students and Human Rights students from across Canada, while students of journalism will be meeting in parallel as well as a group of our own “alumni”. Friday, 17 June, will include representatives of government, implementing institutions, some who contributed to elaboration of the Charter 40 years ago, and a panel looking ahead at gaps and contemporary pressing issues. As we are hosting this gathering, we would be pleased to include a representative from each CAHRI member for whom we would cover the costs in Ottawa; there is no fee, so it is only transportation costs which we are not covering. If enough CAHRI members would be represented, then we could hold CAHRI’s Annual Meeting bi-modally (some in-person and others joining online). Do please let us know the following: 1. The program is designed for law graduates, legal researchers and professionals in the fields of international law and human rights and relevant fields. Candidates to this year program will have the option to participate in the on-site program in Palestine or in the online program version. The first, Al-Haq International Law Summer School on-site, will take place for a period of two weeks in Ramallah - Palestine, starting on 6th June, and concluding on the 18th June 2022. The second, Al-Haq International Law Summer School online, will start on the 18th of July and conclude on the 26th of July 2022, allowing participation of those professionals that cannot travel to the country. The summer school adheres to assist professionals in developing a coherent understanding of the legal and human rights situation in Palestine, while closely observing and exchanging on the main violations committed against the Palestinian people. The summer school offers lectures, discussions and field visits provided by human rights professionals, civil society organizations and human rights defenders on key human rights themes and trends in relation to the Palestinian people as whole. Various learning methods and tools both in offices and in field are applied across the program. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange with diverse number of lecturers, communities and sites (on-site or virtually). Both programs will run in English. Al-Haq’s summer school is a unique opportunity for professionals interested in the Palestinian context, the history and the future of the Palestinian people to achieve their inalienable rights. The International Law Summer School Program includes sessions on the following themes: * Historical overview of the Palestinian context; * International human rights law framework applicable to the Palestinian people; * International humanitarian law applicable to the occupied Palestinian territory; * Field visits and exchanges with communities; * International accountability mechanisms; * Human Rights of specific groups; such as women and children. Please note, Al-Haq has launched the first summer school in 2015, since then, every year Al-Haq hosts a group of participants in Palestine. For the past two years, due to the Covid-19, the program was organized online, integrating recorded field visits to provide participants with the feeling of a real visit. Each year, the topics and themes vary depending on the availability of speakers and relevant developments on the ground, making the annual program unique. Al-Haq, is an independent Palestinian non-governmental human rights organization based in Ramallah, Palestine and established in 1979. Al-Haq’s mission is to protect and promote human rights and the rule of law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Al-Haq documents violations of the individual and collective rights of Palestinians in the OPT, irrespective of the identity of the perpetrator, and seeks to end such breaches by way of advocacy before national and international mechanisms and by holding the violators accountable. The program will cover all participants’ accommodation costs, travel inside the country for program purposes, including airport pickups, and two meals during hours of the program; breakfast and lunch. For the on-site program, participants need to cover the expenses of their own flights, travel insurance, and any other additional costs, such as dinner and accommodation outside of the program. Besides, participants are expected to cover a tuition fee of 300 USD upon arrival in Ramallah in cash, and bank transfers cannot be accepted. Some scholarships might be available to exempt participants who cannot provide the tuition fee, and will be granted on a case-by-case basis. If you need the scholarship or you have to apply for visa in advance, please inform us directly upon the submission of your application. The online program is free of charge. Participants will be provided accommodation in shared rooms (2 or 3 single-beds rooms). If you wish to stay in a room individually, additional costs might apply.
