The truth commission is in response to a joint military operation in their community, which claimed the lives of many of their citizens in a single day, and which shook the entire nation of Jamaica. The study examines and reveals the witnesses’ linguistic dexterity and resilience as they represent their cause and their community while combatting the socio-politically turbulent climate of this truth commission. North (Professor Emeritus, York University) has written numerous journalistic pieces published in various magazines and national newspapers in Canada and Ecuador. She has been Director of the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC, York University), President of the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS), and director of various institution-building projects financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ecuador and other Andean countries. This forum will bring together students, staff, faculty and academic leaders, as well as community partners, to engage in a timely and open dialogue about anti-Asian racism in Canada’s post-secondary education sector. Hosted by the Faculty of Arts, this two-day event will build on the important work initiated by the University of British Columbia at its inaugural National Forum on Anti-Asian Racism in June 2021. We are also excited to inform folks that Alex Rana, current UMIH student intern, will be presenting at the forum. McKay, are cancelled due to the current strike. We apologize for the sudden changes to programming, and we will do our best to re-schedule once we return.
