Dear Friends of the hUManities, Happy Friday! The UMIH is an Institute headed by two settlers of color residing and working in Treaty 1. To honor a week of mourning with our friends & family in the Indigenous communities across Noth America, the UMIH newsletter scheduled every Monday was postponed. As we grief, we encourage settlers like us, to each reflect on our relationship to the Land we occupy and actively practice showing genuine love, honor and respect not only in light of the uncovering of recent atrocities in the Kamloops Indian Residential School but as an on-going and continued effort. Upcoming Events: Care Microgrant Panel Discussion (UMIH + MAWA + QPOC Winnipeg) Wednesday, June 16th, 2021. 7 PM - 9 PM CT. Artists and art-lovers who identify as BIPOC are invited to an online gathering featuring guest panelists, Hassaan Ashraf & Bella Luna moderated by Ekene Maduka, to talk about the work in an upcoming in-person exhibition entitled Care at MAWA (June 16th to July 9th) and the issues it raises. The panel will explore both the possibilities and limits of regarding artmaking as a type of research, particularly within anti-colonial, anti-racist practices. Using found and erasure poetry as literary criticism, this lecture interprets early-20th-century representations of waterfowl by S.C. Ells, “the father of the tar sands,” in light of the drowning of 1600 ducks on a Syncrude tailings pond in 2008. An initiative to help researchers in the Faculty of Arts who are seeking external funding for conferences, workshops, colloquia, and other local research events.
