About the speaker
Professor Esmeralda Thornhill is a lawyer, linguist and pedagogue by training, a lecturer, researcher, anti-racism trainer and writer by experience, and a longtime social justice advocate and community organizer by conviction. Research Associate since 2014 with Concordia's Simone de Beauvoir Institute, she formally retired in 2016 from Dalhousie's Schulich Law School where when appointed first scholar to anchor the unprecedented James Robinson Johnston Endowed Chair in Black Canadian Studies (1996-2002), she became the first African Canadian woman to hold a Tenured Full Professorship of Law in Canada. Seasoned Human Rights scholar-practitioner and founding member of the Congress of Black Women of Canada, she pioneered the first university-accredited course on Black Women's Studies offered in Canada (Concordia, 1983). In 2012 McGill's Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism invited this former Fulbright Fellow to become its first O'Brien Fellow in Residence. Grounded in Critical Race Theory, her teaching, research and scholarship reflect an Afrocentric, anti-racist stance that resolutely addresses the "material reality" which Black people must navigate, nationally and globally. Besides degrees in languages and pedagogy (McGill), law degrees (UQAM, San Diego), post graduate studies in Spain, England and France, and international human rights law internships (UNESCO, Paris; Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Washington, D.C.), she holds Honorary Doctorates from CUNY and Concordia. CHRLP Forum 2021–2022:
Solidarity in an Interconnected World
Inspired by the fabled meeting place in ancient Rome, the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism (CHRLP) Forum is founded on the principles of inclusive citizenship and deliberative democracy. The Forum aspires to create a space for learning from the past, deliberating about the present, and building a common future together.
The CHRLP Forum aims to bring rich and plural insights on the concept of solidarity through engagement with diverse theories of change and ideas of justice.
We invite students, practitioners, and scholars to participate in discussion groups that will explore the nature of international solidarity as a way to bridge differences and opposites. This year's theme, Solidarity in an Interconnected World is detailed here<https://mcgill.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=876a0fb07443c2ba7a644f4f3&…>.

Call for Papers (UPDATED)
2022 Annual Conference
March 30-April 2, 2022, Denver, Colorado, USA
Borderlands inform the stories we tell, the concepts we draw upon, the ways we frame the world, and the pedagogical experiences we offer. To borrow from Gloria Anzaldúa (1987), the borderlands are not only observed, they are lived. As teachers, scholars, researchers, and learners we all navigate multiple and diverse borderlands. As such, the organizing theme for the 2022 Annual Conference is Borderlands Pedagogy: Living and Navigating the Diverse Borderlands of Teaching and Learning. The theme, however, will encompass a wide range of topics, approaches, and areas to enhance our continuing theoretical encounters of understanding what borderlands are and how they affect our lives and the lives of others.
The Association for Borderlands Studies invites proposals for individual papers and complete panels, roundtables, and book presentations related to the study of borders and borderlands, including but not limited to:
• Global Public Health
• Indigeneity & Indigenous Movements
• Media & Arts
• Economy & Development
• Spatial Planning, Cites, & Territory
• Demography
• Intersectionality
• Gender
• Race/ism & Ethnicity
• Conflict/Cooperation
• Migration/Citizenship
• Security/Securitization
• Theory/Methodology
• Pedagogy
• Everyday Lives & Lived Experiences
• Governance/Political Economy/Institutions
• Ethics/Human Rights/Humanitarian Issues
• Populism/Nationalism
• Environment
• Representations of border/lands
For Submissions:
• Panel is a group of papers with a similar theme that has been organized by the person submitting the proposal to make a unified session. A panel must have a chair and 3 or 4 presenters.
o We would like to kindly remind you that all members of your panel must be a member of ABS to present their paper and a WSSA conference registrant.
• Paper is a single paper submitted by one or multiple authors. The program committee will organize individual papers into panels and assign a chair/discussant. Individual papers will be given approximately 15 minutes. The program committee will organize these papers into thematic panels.
• Roundtable is an open session on a topic with no papers. A roundtable must have an organizer and at least three participants.
• Book Presentation is an open session where the author can introduce their new monograph to the ABS members.
Please include the following information in your paper, or panel proposal:
• Title of presentation
• Key words
• Name and affiliation and email address of all authors

To All WSSA Council and Section Coordinators,
The following message is being sent on behalf of Dr. Jussi P. Laine, WSSA President-Elect/Program Coordinator, to all persons who have a user account with ConfTool, and to all addresses on my Call for Papers list. Please forward it to all of the people whom you may be trying to persuade to present at the conference. The attached “Deadlines and Important Dates for Coordinators” has been updated to reflect the additional six weeks before the submission deadline.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Dear Colleagues,
At WSSA we are very grateful for your high interest towards the upcoming Annual Meeting. We fully understand that the enduring COVID-19 pandemic keeps causing challenges and unpredictability, which may make planning your travels more challenging than before. As unfortunately the pandemic is still strongly affecting many parts of the world, we have decided to EXTEND THE DEADLINE for paper submission until January 20, 2022.
The meeting is being organized as a physical event and we very much hope to see you all in Denver in-person. Should you not be able to travel due to a government issued travel restriction, or similar official action, there will be a way to accommodate your participation virtually. Your participation is very important for us, not only for the sake of this conference, but also in order to for us to secure the continuation of these meetings where we can all meet one another in the future.
At our end, we are working hard together with the venue in Denver to make the event not only a great success, but most importantly safe for everyone to attend. The sooner you register, the better we can review our options regarding the specific needs of an in-person meeting in the current circumstances and determine how we can better scale the event to suit the in-person attendance level.
For those of you who live outside the United States, here is some important information:
Since November 8, 2021, all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers to the United States are required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to the United States.
The Moderna vaccine, the Janssen vaccine, and the Comirnaty/Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are the only vaccines currently accepted by the U.S.
To monitor the status of travel restrictions to the U.S., you can use this website:

Message from WSSA President Anthony Amato
WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY IN DENVER?
With AirBnB, Vrbo, and dozens of discount services, it is tempting to take advantage of them to save money when attending the WSSA. Aside from the many nightmare stories that have come to light in the last three years, there are several compelling reasons to stay at Hilton Denver City Center. Many downtown properties in Denver have already filled, and finding a room from March 30 to April 2 will be nearly impossible. Saving a little money could be quite costly and result in picking up a few dollars now only to lose c-notes later.
Many attendees might not realize it, but there is an even more important reason to stay at the Hilton Denver City Center. Attendees’ stays at the conference hotel make it possible for us to put on the conference. The room block reserved for the conference is basically part of a trade-off for the event space for conference. We use over two dozen meeting rooms at our annual meeting. We get these meeting rooms at reduced charge or no charge to the WSSA only if we fill a certain number of guestrooms, which is specified in the contract with the hotel. If we do not fill the guestrooms, we pay a huge penalty--in the tens of thousands of dollars fyi. This is standard practice in the hotel industry. In several cases in the past, our failure to meet our room quota resulted in huge penalties that the WSSA had to pay. A low room take also makes it difficult for us to book hotels for future years because prospective hotels demand evidence of past room takes. When attendees stay at other hotels, AirBnBs, or Vrbos etc., the hotel suffers, but the WSSA suffers more.
It is important that all attendees rent rooms at the conference hotel. Otherwise, the WSSA will be seriously impacted by the financial burden of the penalties. Of course, you can choose not to stay at the conference hotel, but will there be a future WSSA conference for you to attend? In short, decide stay at the Hilton Denver City Center. The WSSA can benefit even from stays of one or two nights in the conference hotel. Thank you.
Sincerely Yours,
Anthony Amato, WSSA President

Announcing the 2021 Recipients of the UCCHRE Human Rights in Higher Education Award
The University and College Consortium for Human Rights Education (UCCHRE) announced today the winners of its first Human Rights in Higher Education Award, which recognizes an individual, organization, initiative, or publication for its outstanding contribution to human rights education. The recipients for 2021 are two distinguished journals in the field: the Human Rights Education Review and the International Journal of Human Rights Education. As editors-in-chief, Audrey Osler, Professor of Education at University College of South-Eastern Norway, and Monisha Bajaj, Professor of International and Multicultural Education at the University of San Francisco, will accept the award on behalf of their respective publications. The 2021 Human Rights in Higher Education Awards will be presented as part of the Human Rights Day Celebration<https://ucchre.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b838f04175e0a57cfbb25e2e&…> of Human Rights Educators USA: Thursday, December 10th at 3:30 EST. Please join us!
The first international award in human rights education, the Human Rights in Higher Education Award, promotes work that embodies human rights principles and practices in teaching, learning, research, policies, and practices. The University and College Consortium for Human Rights Education works to further human rights learning, research, policy, and practices within and across university and college communities through collaboration.
Founded within a year of each other (2018 and 2017 respectively), the Human Rights Education Review and the International Journal of Human Rights Education mark the coming of age of human rights education as a scholarly field. Each provides an international forum for the exchange of research and experiences as well as a space for scholars, young and old, to reach the growing global audience for human rights education in both academia and the world of human rights activism.
In their content and the diversity of their contributors, both journals reflect the international nature of human rights education. Both offer peer-reviewed articles and reviews of the highest quality; both are open source and accessible to individuals outside the academy; both reflect the broad range of applications encompassed by human rights education, including formal, popular, and values education; and HRE in post-colonial, post-conflict, minority, and oppressed communities globally.
Human Rights Education Review
Published by the University of South-Eastern Norway, the Human Rights Education Review (HRER) is dedicated to an examination of human rights education theory, philosophy, policy, and praxis. It particularly welcomes contributions at the intersection of human rights and diversity studies in education and covers all levels of education, from early childhood through to higher education, professional education and lifelong learning. With the Convenors of the WERA International Research Network on Human Rights Education, the Review sponsors a research webinar series that introduces human rights education to the wider educational research community and presents a range of perspectives on research.
International Journal of Human Rights Education
International Journal of Human Rights Education is committed to open-access and online diffusion of leading research in the field in order to democratize access to scholarship. It publishes articles that foster discussions on theories, models, concepts, practices, and empirical research on human rights education in diverse educational, sociopolitical, and cultural settings. The journal seeks to link theory to praxis as well as the emergence of new theories from grounded engagements in the field. Recent issues have focused on significant these such as Human Rights Education and Black Liberation (Volume 5, Issue 1, 2021), Decolonial Human Rights and Peace Education: Recognizing and Re-envisioning Radical Praxes (Volume 4, Issue 1, 2020), and Indigenous Women in Research: Global Conversations on Indigeneity, Rights, and Education (Volume 3, Issue 1, 2019).

A Message from RWCHR International Chair Irwin Cotler
[https://mcusercontent.com/eab80f71b0bea3d659a678f32/images/eb493fac-d2dc-f5…]
This past week I addressed the IHRA closing Plenary wherein I reaffirmed Canada’s Country Pledges at Malmo-to be implemented during 2022-and spoke of the alarming rise of Holocaust distortion, constituting an assault on our democratic values, democratic institutions and democracy itself.
I also participated in launches of Holocaust Education Month, in remembrance of the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht and reminders of the lessons of both.
The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance re China, of which I am Canadian co-chair, called for an end of extraditions to China, a diplomatic Boycott of the Olympic Games and comprehensive and coordinated Magnitsky Sanctions to secure justice for victims and accountability for human rights violators.
Our work regarding political prisoners continued with my writing an Open Letter<https://rwchr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=eab80f71b0bea3d659a678f32&i…>, in concert with PEN Canada, to Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak, held discussions with European Parliamentarians on the case and cause of Raif Badawi, made representations on behalf of imprisoned Iranian Canadian Reza Eslami and on behalf of imprisoned Canadian Uyghur Husseyin Celil and Dr. Wang Bizhang, one of the longest serving political prisoners in China.
I continue to be inspired by the courage and commitment of these political prisoners, which underpin everything I do.
Best,
Irwin Cotler, International Chair of the RWCHR

We cannot be bystanders. We must act.”

Message du professeur Irwin Cotler, Président international du CRWDP
[https://mcusercontent.com/eab80f71b0bea3d659a678f32/images/eb493fac-d2dc-f5…]
