Attached is a handout that each student in that class can download from their D2L that I put together to get them started on their searching. This assignment is due on April 10 but I will be away from March 19-27, returning on March 30 so there may be a few students who would be coming in during this time. The assignment guidelines are the following: Students are asked to write a short synopsis (5-8 pages) of the current literature (from scientific Journals and other established sources) about one of the following topics. * Global warming: the action taken * International action on the ozone: what steps are being taken and what results are being observed * Water shortages in different areas of the world. Political and social consequences * The earth's human carrying capacity: what is a viable number? * Population programs in developing nations. Success and failures * Genetically modified foods: possible impacts on humans or ecosystems Students need to restrict their searches to the following: * Publication range from 2010-2015 * Minimum of 5 primary, peer-reviewed sources Students can use any reference style of their choice, I would recommend APA. Troubleshooting Electronic Resources Tip

Hello all, In anticipation of covering Electronic Resources troubleshooting through Virtual Reference, I wanted to double-check how to best troubleshoot password problems. I was particularly interested in how to tell when an account or password is required. I was wondering if there was a list that we could consult when troubleshooting, which would list all the resources that required a password/account. Here is what Elizabeth had to say: The best way to find out if an account is required is to test the access, starting from the referring URL or from One Stop Search. When there is a technical problem with our subscription, I'd expect to see a message along the following lines: * Your institution does not have access to this resource (followed by a login and password option) * Your access to this resource has expired (followed by a login and password option) * A membership is required to view this resource (followed by a login and password option) - this would be a technical problem if a login and password was not provided. We do not have a list of resources that require the creation of a personal account or the use of a general username and password. Honestly, I think it would take longer to consult a list than to test the access. I have created an "Electronic Resource Tips" page in the VR section of staff.lib (http://staff.lib.umanitoba.ca/node/6175) and have added this content to it. VR Schedule Update

Hello, I updated the VR schedule for the balance of this month and for January to March 2015. In summary: 1. VR will continue this week as normally scheduled until 5:00 pm this Friday. 2. There will be no VR this weekend 3. On 22 and 23 December, VR will conclude at 4:00 pm. 4. VR link within Get It@UML and training for addressing e-resource help requests

Hello, A link to Virtual Reference is being added to the Get It@UML menu to address the volume of requests for assistance using our e-resources. This is a pilot project beginning in January 2015 with Virtual Reference staff helping patrons with e-resources and referring technical problems to Technical Services staff. The presentation will cover a decision-tree and common e-resource issues as well as any questions you may have about this transition. Hello everyone. This is an update to a few things going on with VR. VR Staffing I am pleased to welcome Jennifer Borgfjord-Mcleod and Tomaz Booth who will cover the following VR shifts beginning Sunday, November 2, 2014: * Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 5:00 - 9:00 pm * Friday: 1:00 - 5:00 pm * Saturday and Sunday: 1:00 - 5:00 pm We still need coverage on Friday afternoons until October 31, 2014 and I ask those who have been covering Friday afternoon shifts to continue until that date. Internet Explorer + GetIt Menu issue

Hi all, Just in case you come across this on VR, older versions of Internet Explorer (I believe IE 7 or older, but someone please send an update if I have this wrong!) do not work with our new Get It menu. Below is an example of what the patrons would see - "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". This issue comes up fairly frequently for hospital patrons, as their standard browser is IE and they do not get regular updates. If you are speaking to a hospital patron about this issue, they need to speak to Manitoba eHealth about getting either an IE upgrade or an additional browser installed. In our experience, eHealth seems to be amenable to installing Firefox.
