Thursday 10-11:00

Hi all. We are getting our virtual ref shifts sorted out in Arch/FA/Music and have a dilemma. With Jan G away until March and Zoe resuming her regular Thursday 1-9:00 shift, we are having trouble staffing the Thursday morning shift from 10-11:00. Can anyone trade an hour with us? Or share this slot with us and we can share one of your slots? Perhaps a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday afternoon, between 1:00-4:00? Thanks! Mary

Weekend VR changes

Hi everyone, There will be some changes to virtual reference hours starting this weekend. Hannah Loewen joins the team as the weekend VR operator (Saturdays and Sundays). She will be working out of my office (304A) in the Dafoe Library. Her first day will be Sunday February 2 and her last day will be Sunday April 21. Hannah's hours on Saturdays will be from 9am-5pm and on Sundays from 1pm-9pm. On Saturdays, Hannah will be the primary VR operator, with Libraries staff providing additional support from 1pm-5pm as we've done in the past. On Sundays Hannah will be the sole VR operator. Shaun Mulvey will be moving from Sundays to Fridays and will provide VR service from 1pm-9pm, with Libraries staff providing additional support as required. This is a pilot project to see if extended Friday hours will be of benefit to our students and faculty. Shaun's first Friday will be February 8. Please contact me or Gail if you have any questions. Hi Everyone, I wanted to send out a quick note to address some questions that have come up in regards to virtual reference shifts. 1. What should I do if no one shows up for the VR shift after mine? o We would ask everyone to try and arrive a few minutes early for their shift to ensure a smooth transition. However, everyone forgets sometimes. If no one shows up by the end of your shift and you know who is coming on after you try to contact them. If you can't get a hold of the next scheduled person or don't know who is scheduled you can either continue to provide virtual reference until someone else comes on, find someone to cover, or contact Gail Matheson. If you cannot continue to stay on virtual reference after your shift and you have contacted Gail you can log off. 2. What should I do if it is really busy during my shift and I can't keep up with the questions? o If you ever can't keep up with the questions you can either ask someone who also provides virtual reference to help or contact Gail Matheson and she will try to find someone to help out. 3. What should I do if I can't make my VR shift? o We would ask you or the library assigned to that timeslot to find someone to cover the shift. If it is impossible to find someone to cover please contact Gail Matheson as soon as possible. 4. Who should be logged in on Saturdays? o Saturday shifts are to be covered by reference staff in Science, Dafoe & NJM. All three libraries should be logged in and when not busy with in person patrons be available to answer questions. With three libraries on at once we anticipate it will be easier to answer VR questions when they come in. 5. I'm logged into Pidgin but the online chat widget on the webpage says unavailable what's happening? o The default preferences for Pidgin are to go idle after 5 minutes. Change your preferences in Pidgin by going to Tools, Preferences, Status/Idle, and change either "Minutes before becoming idle" to 90 or change "change to this status when idle" to Available to ensure you can go your whole shift without going offline. o [cid:image001.png@01CD8FFC.B5EA8AB0] **I would ask everyone to check their idle status, I think this might be the reason why chat reference looks offline sometimes** If you have any other questions or concerns about virtual reference feel free to contact me. Need a few extra hands on Wednesday & Thursday a.m.

Good morning! August 15th is tomorrow, and it is the next due date for regular library books. As you may know, patrons will not receive any notice until the 16th, at which point their books are overdue. Patrons cannot renew their books until the 16th. We might expect a higher volume of Virtual Reference questions on Wednesday and Thursday morning if people try to renew their books early, then use up their 3 renewal limit, then on the 16th have no renewals left to actually renew their books with. Can I ask a few circ staff to volunteer to staff Libraryh3lp Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, just in case we get a lot of questions about the due dates? Circ staff are better equipped to handle these questions, as they can look up patron records very quickly, check renewal limits, and problem-solve on the spot. Thanks!
