The retro-fitting of the Hort Storage building is now into its final phase. We are attempting to ensure that the set-up is functioning properly. In order to do so, the eight storage rooms will be filled with potatoes and monitored over the next month or so. In order to access the rooms all materials in the building from all programs must be removed. This needs to be cleaned out by 4:30 PM tomorrow, September 8.
Thank you.

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. All,
To celebrate the start of the term, I would like to re-organize a Friday evening (8, 15, 22, or 29 of September) walk to Bird Hill, as we did a coupe of years ago. We would meet by the park (I can help arranging transportation), and from there we will walk in the forest with supper (bring your own) around a bonfire.
Before finalizing the details, I would like to know if there is some interest. Those interested should email to me no later than Sept 5th.
Thanks,
Claudio
Good morning everyone,
I have been informed that the University is undertaking an audit on capital asset inventory. See message below. This means they would like to physically verify selected items (equipment of all and any kind) in their location. We have been provided an extensive list from which they will sample select items.
We have been given very little notice regarding this site visit. The auditor will be in Plant Science on
Monday, August 28th from 8:30 - 12:00. I will accompany the Auditor to various spaces around the Agriculture and Plant Science Bldgs. I will do my best to limit disruption to you and your work space. They will not be visiting Glenlea or Carman Research Farm at this time.
I realize this is highly inconvenient at this time and do not anticipate high success rate in locating some of the older equipment noted.
Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated.

Subject: Capital Asset Inventory Audit
Hello,
As discussed at the group meeting this week, I was recently informed that the University is undertaking an audit of all capital asset inventory. They have engaged KPMG to assist them with the audit.
Attached is a list Capital Accounting has provided of the capital asset inventory on file as of March 31, 2023. Note: Any items added or disposed of since April 1, 2023 are not accurately reflected in this list.
My current understanding is that the auditor will want to physically verify selected items in their location.
It was noted that, at this time, they will be auditing only items that we have recorded to be on campus. They won't be visiting Glenlea or Carman.
I will be meeting with the auditor this afternoon to obtain further detail and will advise more on process and expectations asap.
Thank you,

Subject: Chemical Clean-Up
We are inviting you to close-out the summer term with a review of the chemicals stored in your labs, workshops, or storage rooms and the opportunity to turn in your expired or damaged chemicals for disposal. High-hazard chemicals that have expired or are unstable can be costly and complicated to dispose of and the University of Manitoba is providing an option for quick and safe disposal.
We have a planned pick up for next week, please notify EHSO by Friday, August 18 if you have high-hazard chemicals that require immediate disposal. If you miss the deadline for this pick-up, we will look into planning additional events in the future.
What to look for
Look through the chemicals in your research space to see if you have any high-hazard chemicals such as:
* Peroxides and peroxide formers,
* Nitro compounds,
* Pyrophoric and water-reactive substances,
* Highly-toxic chemicals, or
* Unstable substances.
Check on the condition of the chemical and the container it is kept in. If it is discoloured, showing signs of crystallization, or expired then it's time to dispose of them. Important: if you find unstable chemicals in your lab, don't touch them and call 204-474-6633 EHSO for instructions. Be prepared to provide an SDS and information on condition and location.
