Subject: Please forward the following message, thanks!
As part of the UM Libraries’ Workshop Series, 13 sessions will be offered in the month of November. Please share this information with faculty, students, and anyone else who may be interested.
A complete list of Fall offerings – including all November sessions – is available here<https://lib-umanitoba.libcal.com/calendar/lib_events>. Some examples of upcoming November workshops are provided below:
Setting up for success with Research Data Management
Primary audience: Graduate students and faculty
Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2022 from 12:00-1:30pm (online)
Register: https://umanitoba.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5UrduurrTooG9QaXYJrQyubC68fYwYi…
· Research Data Management (RDM) best practices cover all phases of research, from designing a project to publishing and preservation. Taking some time in the early stages to set up data management workflows will save time throughout the rest of your project and assure that you have the most control over decisions about data storage, sharing and structure. This session will be ideal for researchers who are just beginning a new project, but is open to all. No prior knowledge of RDM is required. A sample research idea will be provided, although attendees are welcome to work through examples with their own projects in mind.
In this session, participants will:
o Review common RDM practices throughout the research lifecycle
o Reflect on how they practice research data management currently, and where they might consider incorporating new tools or procedures
o Leave with a plan for setting up a new research project embedded with good RDM practices
Searching in Ovid (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, IPA, and Global Health)
Primary audience: Undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty
Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 from 12:00-1:00pm (online)
Register: https://umanitoba.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5wodeuprzIqGtM1axSQciK6-H2Bt_w0…
· OVID databases are powerful search tools and frequently used for knowledge synthesis research. In this hands-on session, learn to put them to work! If you use Medline, Embase, IPA, Global Health, and PsycInfo, or want to learn how to use them more effectively, this hands on workshop will help.
In this session, participants will:

· Do you struggle with organizing your pdfs? In this session you will learn how you can use this free, easy to use program to quickly organize your citations - including PDFs, generate bibliographies in a variety of citation styles and cite while you write. The new Mendeley Reference Manager is a free web and desktop reference management software. The web version of Mendeley and the new Reference Manager are very similar. Note: Mendeley Reference Manager is compatible with Windows, Linux and newer Mac operating systems.
In this session, participants will:
o Compare the features to Mendeley Desktop
o Learn about the different features available
o Compare the features to Mendeley Desktop
o Discover different options to import PDFs

"Regenerative agriculture - Thinking outside the box"
Presented by
Tony McQuail, farmer and ecologist
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2022
Via Zoom Webinar - https://ca01web.zoom.us/j/61862281493?pwd=SEZWaFhzazZiYXZCY1BYQmk5SCttUT09
This talk will explore Regenerative Agriculture in its diversity and discuss the need to "think outside the box" of an industrial mind set when dealing with complex biological systems and processes. It will touch on the "collateral benefits" of a Carbon Sequestration Strategy based on shifting to Regenerative Agricultural systems. It will also explore the difference between optimizing system performance vs maximizing specific outputs.

Subject: REMINDER: International Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutrition and Health - CCARM's Rapid Fire Research Symposium 2023 - FREE REGISTRATION!
Importance: High
Caution: This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba.
On behalf of Dr. Thomas Netticadan, CCARM Team Leader, please forward to everyone in your departments,
Registration for the International Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutrition and Health - CCARM's Rapid Fire Research Symposium<https://meetccarm.ca/> is now open, AND IT'S FREE!
CCARM's 3rd Rapid Fire Symposium will occur January 19-20, 2023. 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM CST. The event will be held in the Samuel N. Cohen Auditorium<http://www.sbrc.ca/facilitiesandsupport/auditorium/> at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
This symposium comes at a time when there is a tremendous public interest in utilizing food to achieve health benefits, beyond just providing basic nutritional requirements. The need for new information in this area is high, and it is, therefore, our pleasure to provide scientific sessions that will highlight the progress in this field.
Another major component of this meeting is education. The promotion of trainees is critical to developing the next generation of investigators, and there is a strong need to develop greater capacity in this area. Furthermore, this symposium is an opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to showcase their research and achievements and provide them with the opportunity to network and engage in discussions with other researchers and trainees in their field.
Register here<https://meetccarm.ca/registration/> before December 15, 2022.
Abstracts to be submitted here<https://meetccarm.ca/abstract/> before November 15, 2022

The Point welcomes a new addition to the shop... a Power Jet hot water pressure washer!
It’s the same make and model as the system at Carman. This new equipment, courtesy of the WGRF field equipment research grant, will allow us to more easily follow our current biosecurity protocol, as well as the mantra to "arrive clean" at each work site. Please contact Mel Kaufman or a technician in your lab group for training on how to safely operate this equipment. Our thanks to Mel for getting this new unit up and running at the Point!

· Each year soil samples are taken to determine nutrient status of the soil and to make plans on nutrient management in future.
· There’s another aspect in soil sampling - bulk density, which is usually assessed to characterize the state of soil compactness in response to land use and soil management practices. That is part of what Sarah Wilcott (pictured) is trying to achieve.
Graduate Student News
· The PSGSA is very excited to be back on campus and is planning some great events to bring graduate students and faculty together. We’d love to see you out at our weekly Monday morning coffee breaks at 10:30 to ease those Monday blues.
