The Department Holiday Party will be held on Friday, December 15 from 1:00pm - 4:30pm, in 218 Plant Science Seminar Room.
The Social Committee will be preparing a poster which I will send out as soon as I receive it.
The Atrium cannot be used that day as there is an exam being written in Carolyn Sifton beginning at 1:30pm.
Thanks,

Hey everyone,
I'm looking for some chemicals for an agar mix for bacteria. I do not have cephalexin so if anyone would be able to give me some that would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Noah

Subject: Second International Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutrition, and Health
Hi all,
In the recent Faculty Research Committee meeting, I highlighted FHNS's initiative to host the second international Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutrition, and Health. The event's theme encompasses all the research topics within FAFS, and we've already received 84 abstracts from around the globe, although domestic submissions are currently underrepresented. This presents an excellent opportunity to showcase the research conducted by our graduate students and postdocs while fostering networking across departments. I encourage you to inspire your students to submit abstracts and deliver presentations (7 minutes each). Attached is the advertisement, and below are the event details scheduled for January. Abstract submission deadline was December 5, but it will be open a few for days to encourage local students.
Regards,
Cristina

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. After the success of the first edition with participants from 19 countries, we are launching the second International Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutritional and Health<https://meetccarm.wordpress.com/>.
January 25-26, 2024. 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
IT'S FREE! and virtual for those living outside of Winnipeg, Canada.
The registration for the symposium is now open<https://meetccarm.ca/registration/>.
This symposium comes at a time when there is a tremendous public interest in utilizing food to achieve health benefits, beyond just providing basic nutritional requirements. The need for new information in this area is high, and it is, therefore, our pleasure to provide scientific sessions that will highlight the progress in this field.
Another major component of this meeting is education. The promotion of trainees is critical to develop the next generation of investigators, and there is a strong need to develop greater capacity in this area. Furthermore, this symposium is an opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to showcase their research and achievements and provide them with the opportunity to network and engage in discussions with other researchers and trainees in their field.
The event will occur January 25-26, 2024. 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM CST at the Richardson Centre for Food Technology and Research Auditorium at the Richardson Centre for Food and Technology and Research at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This will be a virtual event for those living outside of Winnipeg, Canada.
The registration for the symposium is now open<https://meetccarm.ca/registration/>, and IT'S FREE! Register before January 5, 2024.
All authors wishing to participate in the International Trainee Symposium in Agri-Food, Nutrition and Health must submit an online abstract<https://meetccarm.ca/abstract/> for review by the Program Committee before December 5, 2023. Oral presentations will be seven minutes in duration.
We will be glad to have the possibility to learn about the research carried out at the Universidad De la Republica Uruguay and interconnect with each other virtually.
We would appreciate if you could spread the information among the groups of your department and/or collaborators that focus in Agriculture, Food, and Human Nutritional Sciences.
For more information, please contact FHNS administration at FHNS.admin(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:FHNS.admin@umanitoba.ca>
Sincerely,

Subject: Disruption to Growth Room Space!
Attention All Growth Room space users:
For the Month of March 2024, only three of the 6 Walk-in Growth Rooms in the Agriculture Bldg. will be operational. The Point growth rooms will not be affected and will be available during this time.
The Plant Science's 6 walk-in growth rooms are being renovated in 2 phases. The first phase involves upgrading the 6 cooling condensers on the roof, a vital component of the room's cooling system. An outside contractor has been awarded the tender and the new condensers are on order and are expected to arrive in mid-February. Three growth rooms at a time will be shut down for about 2 weeks, as 3 old condensers are removed and replaced with one large condenser unit. Work needs to be completed by March 31, 2024.
This will be a difficult time for those users affected but hopefully we can share space and make use of available Point growth room space. I will keep you posted with all updates
Cathy
