Subject: grad news

Hi everyone!
There are 3 pieces of news:
1) Great job everyone on bringing in food for the hamper! For those
of you who did not get the chance to sign up for an item, we still
need to buy the family gifts. You can donate money and the PSGSA will
buy the gifts. You can give your money to Iris, Meghan, Anne,
Victoria, Muthu, Teresa or Jessica. Please try to have in your money
and food brought in by this Friday.
2) Starting this Thursday December 11, we will be having treats at
coffee time for the holiday season! The treats will be free (provided
graciously by the social committee)... so come to the grad lounge at
10 am for coffee, or tea, or just to have some yummy treats! ... and
if you feel like bringing something so share with everyone, you can do
that too.
3) Next week on Thursday December 18th at 2:00 pm in room 218 is
the Plant Science Department christmas party, so make sure you come
because there will be food, drinks and games. The party will end
around 4:00 ... but not for the grad students! We will be going out
for drinks afterwards ... probably at Tavern.
see you at coffee time!
Iris

PhD-student project EU - SPICY
Wageningen University and Research Centre
Wageningen (NL) and Avignon (France), (Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Job descriptionGeneral information:
The aim of the EU project ?Smart tools for Prediction and Improvement of
Crop Yield? (SPICY; KBBE-2007-1-1-01; www.spicyweb.eu
<http://www.spicyweb.eu>) is to develop a suite of tools for molecular
breeding of crop plants for sustainable and competitive agriculture. The
tools help the breeder in predicting phenotypic response of genotypes
for complex traits under a range of environmental conditions. Pepper
will be used as a model crop.
Job description:
Within the SPICY project, statistical-genetic models for phenotypic
responses will be combined with physiological models to improve the
prediction of phenotypic responses in dependence on genetic and
environmental inputs. The PhD project will aim specifically at the
development of QTL models for multiple traits, where the traits are
related to each other via multiple links at different biological
organization levels, producing network types of models. Important model
classes are non-linear mixed models, graphical models, linear structural
relationships models and Bayesian belief networks.
This project will be a collaboration between WUR-Biometris, NL, (Marco
Bink & Fred van Eeuwijk) and INRA-Avignon (Alain Palloix & Veronique
Lefebvre). The student will spend about half of the time in Avignon (FR)
and the other half in Wageningen (NL).
The exact contract still needs to be defined as the contract should
satisfy both the requirements of INRA-Avignon as those of Wageningen UR.

combine innovative modelling and advanced data processing, using data
from modern molecular-genetic analyses and extensive experimental
physiological work. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) and

Hi Everyone!
For this holiday season, the Plant Science Graduate Students'
Association will be putting together a 'hamper' for a family in need.
The way a 'hamper' works is that Winnipeg Harvest will assign us a
family that does not have enough food for the holiday season. Then, we
put together a hamper full of food and toys that will be delivered for
the family.
All you have to do is bring a few food items in. On the fridge in the
grad lounge is a list of items. Please sign up for an item and then
bring it in. The items are simple and easy to find in your house or in
the supermarket (for example, soup, jam and peanut better).
Please take the time to go to the grad lounge and find out what items we
need so that we can help a family in Winnipeg have a happy christmas.
The deadline is next wedensday december 10th ... its not that much time,
but i know we can pull together and do this!
thanks!
