Peter B.E. McVetty Plant Breeding Scholarship in the Department of Plant Science The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize students who have achieved academic excellence in a Master's or Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba. One or more scholarships will be offered to graduate students who: * are enrolled full-time in their second year of a Master's program, or in their second or third year of a Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba; * have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours of study; * have demonstrated achievement in plant breeding research applicable to the Canadian Prairies. Applications should be submitted to Martha.Blouw(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Martha.Blouw@umanitoba.ca> and must include: * A covering letter describing: a) the status and progress of the applicant's research program and coursework; b) the value of the applicant's research project to cultivar development in the Canadian Prairies; * An abstract of the applicant's research project; * A copy (photocopy is acceptable) of the transcript of the applicant's graduate student program academic record; * A letter of recommendation from one member of academic staff sent directly to Martha.Blouw(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Martha.Blouw@umanitoba.ca>. While the scholarship is open to all graduate students engaged in plant breeding research, preference will be given to graduate students engaged in canola/rapeseed plant breeding research. Hello everyone, With fast adaption of R for statistical analysis in academia, there is a proposal to divide the statical course into two modules. In the first module, students will learn about the principle/ fundamental knowledge of statistics. For the second module, students will have opportunity to adopt either R or SAS program for their learning. But the faculty would like if graduate students could provide inputs on any specific statistical procedure(s) that they wished they had learned to better aid for our data analysis. Grad Lounge field season supplies

To all plant science graduate students, The field season is upon us and PSGSA has provided water & Gatorade bottles, as well as snacks, sunscreen, and insect spray, and kept them in the grad lounge. Please note that these items are intended for use by students working at the Point, CTC, and Ag. building greenhouse, however we do recommend still bringing your own supplies. The water and drinks in the lounge are extra or back-up if you are working at the mentioned locations for longer periods or have forgotten to bring your own. Sunscreen and insect spray are shared items and we expect them to stay in the lounge after use. We want to extend these supplies until the end of the field season and only for people who need it the most, so please only use them when absolutely needed. Thank you for cooperation, PSGSA Team

In fact, only a registered single bread wheat variety (AAC Tenacious) is rated as resistant. The slow progress of developing resistant varieties stems from the complex, quantitative expression of resistance, coupled with strong genotype by environment interactions . Also, the poor correlation between FHB incidence and severity with DON content, and the laborious task of phenotyping the disease making selection for enhanced resistance challenging. Furthermore, FHB resistance genes are often linked with undesirable agronomic traits (i.e. plant height, grain protein content) that slows genetic progress. In recent years, the pairing of mutagenesis with next generation sequencing has become an reliable technique for trait improvement and the identification of gene function. The development of the TILLING (targeting induced local lesions in genomes) method has significantly advanced the detection of useful mutations in crops. The role: In this project the candidate will be working with a research team integrating high-end genomics technologies to contribute to the production of a high quality genome of AAC Tenacious, characterization of a Targeting Induced Local Lesions In Genomes (TILLING) population, production of genotypic and phenotypic data of the TILLING population where germplasm and database will be available to all Canadian wheat research programs. This job opportunity requires a highly motivated candidate with experience in Next Generation Sequencing. Experience using R, Linux/Unix and/or Experience in coding languages are desirable. Les boursiers doctoraux de l'ICPA, Lisa Ashton, Hannah Lieberman, Callum Morrison et Marie-Élise Samson, sont un groupe multidisciplinaire qui se concentre sur l’intégration de la recherche scientifique et des données dans le développement de la politique entourant l'atténuation du changement climatique et le rôle que la séquestration du carbone peut jouer dans les terres cultivées du Canada.
