Department Strategic Planning

Hi all, You might remember that in the past two months, PSGSA has shared a couple of surveys to get your input on some major changes we want to see happen in the department, with focus on teaching, outreach and research in particular. All of your responses have been compiled and shared in a series of brainstorming workshops during department council meetings. The end result is outlining a formal Strategic Plan (attached in this e-mail) that documents action items proposed following everyone’s ideas. As you read through the document, you’ll notice that there are action plans following each action item – and some of those would greatly benefit from student participation (namely the Social committee and the Events committee). PSGSA will soon hold another meeting with the rest of the student body to discuss the document: 1) to collect some further opinions or ideas, and 2) to share interest in volunteering as a member in the committees outlined. From: Dean Agriculture Sent: May 28, 2021 1:43 PM Subject: UPDATE Re Carman Research Farm - CLOSURE EXTENDED Investigations of positive COVID-19 cases of individuals who have attended the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm in Carman continue. Public Health leads all investigations into positive cases and identifies close contacts. As this work is not yet complete, we still do not have a full understanding of the extent of risk posed. I am therefore extending the closure of the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm at Carman until at least Thursday June 3. Anyone (faculty, staff or student) who has been at the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm at Carman since May 10 must work remotely from home until Thursday June 3 and monitor assiduously for symptoms of COVID-19 (https://www.gov.mb.ca/asset_library/en/coronavirus/covid19_screening_checkl…). It is important that any potential for spread of the virus is not merely shifted to a Fort Garry lab or to the Point. Therefore, stay home and self-monitor. Although the restrictions with respect to the Carman Research Farm still stand, some low-risk EMERGENCY field work may continue. The emphasis is on EMERGENCY work to preserve field work samples so that research can continue later. Work is only permitted under the following conditions: 1) Only emergency FIELD work is permitted (eg scouting for infestation, spraying, etc) 2) Work can only be performed by University technical or academic staff (i.e., no summer students, graduate students, postdocs or research associates) 3) All staff performing the emergency work continue to assiduously monitor for symptoms 4) Wellness declaration is completed every morning prior to travel 5) All PHYSICAL distancing (stay 2m apart) and PPE protocols (wear 3-ply masks, sanitizing surfaces) are rigorously adhered to (no peer to peer interactions in the field) 6) Only one person per vehicle 7) Vehicle has all necessary supplies for the day's work and breaks 8) Vehicle is fully gassed up in Winnipeg 9) Daily journal of activities is maintained by personnel doing field work (as per approvals associated with permission for opening up for research last year) Mr Justice Zhanda will be present at the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm, but the building will NOT be open. If you have any questions on this please do not hesitate to contact me. South West Entrance to Plant Science will be closed 11:30am to 5:00pm today

Good morning , The contractor will need to temporarily shutdown the south west entrance to the building today from 11:30 to 5:00 so they can remove the wood siding above the entrance. The entrance will be back open for use after 5:00pm today. The contractor will place signs on both the inside and outside faces of the doors letting people know to use the north west entrance. They south exit door will still be available for use as an emergency exit. Carman Station Covid Reminders

Hi all, PSGSA believes it is important to reiterate the department’s expectations from us students regarding the recent Covid situation out in the Carman research station. The following items might have been circulated in your respective labs already but if not, please pay attention: * the Carman station is closed until Monday (May 31)<outlook-data-detector://1> but starting tomorrow (May 27) at 7:30 am, Emergency field work is permitted - but only for technical staff (no summer students/graduate students/postdocs/research associates) * examples of "Emergency work" include scouting for infestation, spraying, etc.) * Staff performing emergency work are expected to follow the same precautions already in place: 2m distancing, proper PPE (3-ply masks), surface sanitation, and symptom monitoring. There cannot be any interaction with peers. * Only 1 person per vehicle is allowed, whether it’s personal or the department’s. Ensure that vehicles are appropriately fueled in Winnipeg prior to the trip. The main takeaway for students is that we are not allowed to be at the station until Monday, so be sure to communicate with your technicians if your plots do require emergency attention. I have been made aware of a second positive COVID-19 case of a second individual who has attended the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm in Carman in the past week. Public Health leads all investigations into positive cases and identifies close contacts. As this work isn't complete, we do not currently have a full understanding of the number of individuals who may be considered close contacts and must isolate. I am therefore making the decision that as of Tuesday May 25, 23:59, the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm at Carman will be closed until at least Sunday May 30. I recognize that this will cause real hardship to researchers and to graduate students at a critical time in the agricultural research cycle, and so I do not make this decision easily. However, the health and wellbeing of staff and students must be prioritized. Anyone (faculty, staff or student) who has been at the Ian M. Morrison Research Farm at Carman since May 10 must work remotely from home until Monday May 31 and monitor assiduously for symptoms of COVID-19 (https://www.gov.mb.ca/asset_library/en/coronavirus/covid19_screening_checkl…).
