Ian Morrison Award for Advanced Studies in Crop Protection

Ian N. Morrison Award for Advanced Studies in Crop Protection An endowment fund has been established at the University of Manitoba as a memorial tribute to Dr. Ian N. Morrison. The purpose of the award is to provide support for graduate students in the Department of Plant Science. The scholarship, valued at $4925, will be offered to one or more graduate students who: (1) have completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Food Science; (2) have demonstrated academic excellence with a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 in their last 60 credit hours of study; (3) have enrolled as a full-time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba and undertakes a graduate program in the Department of Plant Science investigating an aspect of crop protection. Preference may be given, in order of priority, to: (a) a student entering or in the second year of the graduate program and (b) to a student whose project is related to the advancement of knowledge on the biology and/or management of weeds. Applications should be submitted to Martha Blouw by November 19, 2018. Applications include: 1. Summary of research project (one page maximum); 2. All academic transcripts/student histories (photocopies are sufficient); 3. Curriculum vitae; 4. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff (each one page maximum). Peter B.E. McVetty Plant Breeding Scholarship in the Department of Plant Science The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize students who have achieved academic excellence in a Master's or Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba. One or more scholarships will be offered to graduate students who: * are enrolled full-time in their second year of a Master's program, or in their second or third year of a Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba; * have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5; * have demonstrated achievement in plant breeding research applicable to the Canadian Prairies. Applications should be submitted to Martha Blouw by November 19, 2018 and must include: * A covering letter describing: a) the status and progress of the applicant's research program and coursework; b) the value of the applicant's research project to cultivar development in the Canadian Prairies; * An abstract of the applicant's research project; * A copy (photocopy is acceptable) of the transcript of the applicant's graduate student program academic record; * A letter of recommendation from one member of academic staff. While the scholarship is open to all graduate students engaged in plant breeding research, preference will be given to graduate students engaged in canola/rapeseed plant breeding research. VALUE: $4950 DEADLINE: November 19, 2018

Dr. Ian Morrison Travel Award (Value up to $1900) Dr. Sig Helgason Travel Award (Value up to $1825) Dr. Lakhdar Lamari Travel Award (Value up to $1600) Dr. Kenneth Clark Travel Award (Value up to $1050) for Graduate Students in Plant Science These awards provide funding for students who will be attending a scientific meeting in a plant science related area and will be presenting the results of their research at the meeting (poster or oral presentation). These awards will be offered to one or more graduate students who: * have completed at least one year of an M.Sc. or Ph.D. program delivered by the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba; * have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours; * will be attending a scientific meeting in a plant science related area and will be presenting the results of their research at the meeting (poster or oral presentation); * have demonstrated research ability based on the abstract submitted and the proposed research results to be presented at the meeting. Funding must be used within the 12 month period following the date that the award recipients are announced. Recipients graduating within the 12 month period following the date of the award offer must use the funding no later than six months from the date of convocation. Recipients may not hold more than one travel award offered through the Department of Plant Science within the same calendar year. Selection of the recipients will be based on: * academic performance; * letters of recommendation; * the quality of the abstract submitted and of the proposed research results to be presented; * the potential value of the meeting to the student's development. The award recipient will submit receipts for travel, registration, hotel and food expenses (based on current University of Manitoba per diem rates).
